In the 78th meeting between UGA and UK, the Dawgs will be looking to extend their current win streak over the Cats to 15. The longest win streak the Cats have in the series were 2 wins in 1949 & 1956. It was in 1956 that the Dawgs and Cats began meeting annually, prior to that they had played 9 times with the Dawgs winning 5, the Cats 3 and a tie game. Overall the Dawgs lead the series with a record of 63-12-2.
ESPN Bet has UGA as a 22 point favorite and the Over/Under is set at 44.5. If I were a gambling man, I would take the over. It’s been a bit of a slog playing in Lexington the past 2 visits, UGA getting out of there with a 14-3 win in 2020 and a 16-6 win in 2022. But, UGA topped 44.5 by themselves last season in Athens. I think they are capable of doing that again.

The debut of this feature seemed to be popular with the refugees, so we’re going to keep it up.

The Fech fan base is so irrelevant that MBG rarely has anything, so here’s a bonus from the nerds at StinkTalk.

Lose a game to Syracuse after you get into the top 25 for the first time in a long time? In the immortal words of the ultimate nerd, at Georgia Tech, you can do that! Congrats to Fran Brown for giving Brent Key a wedgie Kirby style.
Now onto the other geniuses of the message board universe:
Notre Dame comes crashing down after their win in the nation’s most intimidating atmosphere (eye roll), Kyle Field. Losing at home to a Group of 5 opponent is not a good look. The Irish offense is painful to watch, and Riley Leonard looks at a quarterback at Duke. When your fan base is taking shots at your sideline fashion choices, things aren’t well. To the Irish subway alumni, Nick Saban ain’t going to give up his cushy job at ESPN and his golf game for you bunch of blowhards.
Yes, Notre Dame is wildly overrated and will be in the expanded ESPN Invitational by its name and soft as Charmin schedule.
Auburn loses at home to Cal after last week’s thrashing of Alabama A&M. The Tigers’ offense went back to being its post-Gus Bus dysfunctional self with fewer than 300 yards of total offense and 5(!) turnovers. Auburn fans calling their coach an “idiot” is just golden. Sleeze’s burner phone problems are going to follow him wherever he goes. Hugh Freeze and Auburn … a match made in hell. The Greater Opelika geniuses are already starting (when do start seeing private flight plans to Northwest Arkansas?):
This brings us to the asterisked national champion:
Texas made post Connor Stalions Michigan look slow and pedestrian in their rout of the Wolverines in the Big House. The genius knives are already out for Sherrone Moore citing his age and lack of experience. Maybe the problem is your talent level warranted cheating to win. The way Texas scattered, smothered, chunked and diced Michigan would make a room of Waffle House cooks give Sark a standing ovation.
Which brings us to Colorado …
Reality is setting in at Boulder. Coach Prime is clearly in over his head. Nebraska outmuscled Colorado to a 28 point halftime lead and then cruised to victory. I wonder when we’ll see an over/under line on how many games Shadeur Sanders plays before Prime opts him out for the draft preparation or he’s broken into pieces as a result of his offensive line. Travis Hunter lost it on the field last night. It sucks to be you, Travis. You could have played for the best program in the country. Sucker.
A view from Lexington.
I guess basketball season is going to start super early after Saturday’s face plant against the Palmetto Poultry. When your quarterback gets outplayed by LaNorris Sellars, it’s not good. When your own fans are saying you’re worse than Vanderbilt, that’s not encouraging for the home field advantage when #1 rolls in next Saturday night.
Finally, from the state “south” of us:
The Rural Central Florida Basement Dwellers/Meth Heads are beyond delusional at this point. Urban Meyer doesn’t want any part of Kirby Smart. That would be a reason I would love for this to happen where cold pizza under TIAA Bank Field is plentiful. On the other hand, the same crowd who celebrated when Dumbo Fisher left for College Station now wants him back. Watching the Florida schools be a total mess is a sight for these 90s and 2000s sore eyes.
What did you see online this weekend that made you laugh especially at our rivals?
After a satisfying throttling of the Clumpson Tiggles, the Dawgs entertain the Golden Eagles in their home opener of the 2024 season. Interestingly, rain was a concern in last season’s game 2 at Sanford. A lot of rain in the southeast this weekend but, the forecast for 2:00 today is a 15% chance of rain for the duration of the game. Here’s hoping it stays fairly dry for those of you in attendance.
Bet ESPN has the line at 53.5 in favor of the Dawgs. The Over/Under is 62.5… so, are the oddsmakers telling me that TT is capable of putting up 9 points against UGA today? I have my doubts on that.
Not a whole lot to look for today, I expect to see 2nd & 3rd stringers today… do we have a 4th string? TT is mainly here to collect $550,000 for playing the role of the Washington Generals today. Everyone stay healthy!
This is your open thread to discuss today’s UGA game.
Go Dawgs!
To quote the line from a famous movie, “you’re gonna need a bigger boat”.
I’m guessing by 2 pm, folks will be thirsty, and by 4 pm, Sanford will be dry. Couple that with cooler and overcast weather, sounds like a nice day to tailgate in the stadium if you have to.
I will be with all of you in attendance at the Benz, in spirit. Section HD has been spruced up, the cooler is stocked with libations. Velveeta/sausage/rotel dip in the crockpot, boiled peanuts from Hardy Farms on ice. We have a small crew joining us for the game today… one of these days I’m gonna talk ole whit1356 into joining me on the dock for a game! Here’s what we’re working with today (got another TV on a rolling stand for when there are 4 important games on at once!):

What’s my prediction for the game?

What am I watching for? How will the running backs be managed and how will they respond to the turmoil currently around them? Will UGA’s defense break another Clemson QB? It’s not out of the realm of possibility.
Would you like a program for today’s game?

Go Dawgs!

We have finally arrived. The last time our Dawgs were on the field, Georgia was taking the “Unconquered” behind the woodshed for a 63-3 embarrassment that could have been worse … much worse. The last time the Tiggers were on the field, they were squeaking by an unranked SEC team we beat by 38. At noon on Saturday, the two teams get together at noon on the turf of Mercedes Benz Stadium to renew the rivalry.
I can’t write a preview this week without mentioning some of our content creator in perpetuity’s greatest hits when it comes to the Greater Anderson Cow College:
For more from the Senator on Saturday’s opponent: https://blutarsky.wordpress.com/category/clemson-auburn-with-a-lake/.
When Georgia Has the Ball
Earlier in the week, I mentioned red zone conversion rate as an interesting statistic from last year. The Dawgs were almost automatic to put up a score after entering the red zone while the Tigers’ defense struggled to keep points off the board when away from Howard’s Rock. The issue is that the Tiger defense doesn’t typically give opponents many opportunities in a game to get into the red zone. In the Tigers’ 4 losses in 2023, opponents’ red zone conversion percentage was 100%.
What does all of that mean? If Georgia’s offensive line is able to do enough against the Clemson defense to sustain drives and get into the red zone, I don’t think Clemson has much of a chance to make this a game as Georgia likely gets into the 30s where the Dawgs have been practically unbeatable in the Smart era.
How can this happen? 1st down success and 3rd down conversions. All of this comes down to how successful the Dawgs’ offensive line is in moving the line of scrimmage on run downs and keeping Carson Beck upright in the passing game. All of the chatter is that Trevor Etienne will not play against his older brother’s college team due to suspension and Rod Robinson is not going to be available due to toe surgery (practically guaranteed). If #1 doesn’t play, can Branson Robinson hold up in his first action since last year’s pre-season knee injury and Nate Frazier be able to pass protect when needed? If Beck gets time to throw, I believe he will carve up the Clemson secondary.
When Clemson Has the Ball
This game may be the biggest game former 5-star QB Cade Klubnik has played in since arriving in the South Carolina Upstate. Can the Georgia defense take away the Clemson rushing attack and rattle Klubnik as they did DJ Ukulele in 2021? If so, it could be a long afternoon for the Tigers in Atlanta. That means the Georgia defensive line has to improve against the run over last year’s effort. Saturday is not a day for the Georgia defense to sit back and allow the Clemson offense to dictate as we did in our last appearance in the Benz. The defense needs to be ready to attack the Clemson offense from the moment they get off the bus even it means taking a risk of exposing a young but talented secondary in coverage.
What Will Happen
Georgia wants to get off to a fast start on both sides of the ball. Clemson likely wants to shorten the game and keep the Georgia offense on the sideline and their stout defense fresh. I do think Georgia is better in totality across the lines of scrimmage and has a clear advantage at quarterback. I believe we see a Georgia team that is still salty after getting left out of the playoff last year. That probably doesn’t bode well for the Tiggers. The Dawgs win a game that isn’t as close as the final score indicates and shows the country in the first TV window that the road to the national championship is going to go through Athens at some point in the season.
Final Score: Georgia 31, Clemson 20
We’re so close, scamps. I can feel the hate for other teams brewing, and the joy for an approaching season is getting the homerism to peak form. Excited is an understatement…to get the froth bubbling a little bit more, here’s some testimony about the greatest to ever do it, Larry Munson.
Go Dawgs!
Let’s do a Saturday mix of our highlight countdown of Dawg touchdowns with another Athens institution – R.E.M.
Last Sunday was the anniversary of the release of R.E.M.’s 4th album, Lifes Rich Pageant, which turned out to be a critical turning point in the band’s career, refining their sound and moving them from popular moody college rock band to a worldwide sensation. The album featured two songs that would skyrocket and move the band forward with their most commercially successful album to date, peaking at number 21 on the Billboard charts: “Fall on Me” and “Superman”.
Superman features Mike Mills as the lead singer, and is a cover of the original version that came from The Clique, which has a distinctly more psychedelic sound than R.E.M.’s version of the song.
Part of the driving reason for the change in the band’s sound came about from their selection of Don Gehman as their producer. Originally hesitant to work with a major producer, as the band was still clinging to their independent roots and rejecting the major studio influences, the guys had Gehman come to Athens to work on some recording samples for some of their ideas for the next album. Mills was wanting to broaden the band’s experimentation with various other instruments, and Gehman’s work on John Cougar Mellencamp’s acoustic album piqued their interest in working with the producer, who had an extensive career working with the likes of James Brown and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, and later Hootie and Blowfish and Tracy Chapman. He earned his first studio credit working with Stephen Stills and his notoriety was really developed in his ability to construct what is considered the evolution of the construction of P.A. systems for modern band concerts.
The book Reveal: The Story of R.E.M. provided a lot of insight into the band’s work with Gehman. The guys were going through a bit of a change at the time, as well, with Berry getting married right before recording the album, and Mills and Berry were debuting a Led Zeppelin cover band called the Corn Cob Webs at the 40 Watt, while Stipe was also touring with various bands of interest at the time. While they didn’t care for John Cougar Mellencamp, they were wise enough to recognize good recording quality when they heard it.
Gehman was invited to a gig, where he was allowed first impressions of the band. “I was intrigued” he would recall “I wouldn’t say impressed”. The band was running up on their final two albums in their contract with IRS, and they were looking for leverage to renew their contract. The band had a backlog of songs ready for recording. The oldest was “Just a Touch”, which was written about the day that Elvis died, and was one of the fiercer songs of the band’s at the time. “Fall on Me” had been one of the more recent concepts, a song written by Stipe about acid rain. Another eco-conscious song, “Cuyahoga” was also brought into the fold for recording on Pageant.
Interestingly, one song considered at the time was “PSA”, which was recorded as a studio demo in 1986, and would later be revamped as “Bad Day” in 1986, but was the prototype of “It’s the End of the World as We Know It”. See if you can hear it:
Gehman wasn’t intimidated by the young band’s resolute nature to do things their way. One of his first rules of recording is that listeners like to know what words are signing – even if they don’t understand them or the message. This lead to a conflict with Stipe, when Gehman asked the singer “what the fuck is this about” and challenged Stipe on his lyrics, where promptly crossed his arms and left the studio in a fit. Stipe would later admit that Gehman’s direction threw him for a loop for several records, but ultimately pushed him in a different lyrical direction that would lead the the singer and the band’s success for albums to come.
In all, Berry felt the drum sound improved, Buck declared himself as “not a lead guitarist” and wouldn’t explore long, heavy solo riffs, Mills got to play in the lab with several different instruments and types of keyboards, and Stipe became a refined singer. The rest, they say, is history. “Superman” was recorded during these sessions as a proposed B-side album.
And speaking of Superman, today’s Dawg P*rn is brought to you by Superman himself, Brock Bowers, from last year’s Kentucky game. His 21 yard score is at the 1:07 mark.
What a game. Ray Davis had just rushed for 280 yards the week prior against Florida, Georgia had looked human in games leading up to it, and most of the pundits were predicting this to be the upset game for the Dawgs.
The defense limited Davis to 59 yards, and Bobo decided to open the crayon box and allow Beck and Company to finally play around a little. Georgia would amass 608 yards of offense to Kentucky’s 183, in a beautiful evening game in Athens. Let’s hope to see more of these in 2024.
