Sleeping with the Enemy

I have to wonder how we let this happen. After two seasons of prolific offense, we let a coach slip away to the Barners. And, of course, Auburn already released an image of him in the wolf’s clothing.

The Bulldogs led the league in home runs during the 2025 and 2026 regular seasons, while shattering the program record with 179 longballs last year. They also set new team marks for wins, runs scored and RBIs, while making their first trip to the College World Series in 18 years.

Perhaps Ammirati’s biggest impact came on the recruiting trail, where he helped Georgia bring in the top-ranked transfer portal class last year. Ammirati historically excels in the area, with coach Wes Johnson calling him a “dynamic recruiter” upon his hiring in 2025.

‌”He’s a star,” Johnson said before that season. “We’re extremely different personalities — I’m a little more loud, and Nick’s a little more quieter, but we think a lot alike. He’s always looking for something to make a player better, whether it be through a mechanical change or through analytics, and he’s very exceptional at it. He understands data, he values data, and he’s able to help players.”

In addition to hitting, Ammirati primarily worked with Georgia’s outfielders. He also helped director of player development/video and scouting Drew Finley manage the pitching staff in games where Johnson got ejected.

Ugh. Auburn had some great arms, but didn’t necessarily excel in the hitting department at times…this isn’t something we should be okay seeing happen, but such is the business.

I’d say good luck, but, you know…Auburn sucks.

Kirby and Wes Must’ve Had a Conversation

This is unheard of, unless you’re talking about Kirby Smart…but we’re not…we’re talking about Georgia Baseball here.

Daniel Jackson will join Charlie Condon in Colorado, and was Georgia’s highest draft pick at number 37. The rest of the list:

  • 37th – Daniel Jackson, Rockies
  • 77th – Joey Volchko, White Sox
  • 109th – Ryan Lujo, Angels
  • 170th – Justin Byrd, Angels
  • 207th – Caden Aoki, Rangers
  • 209th – Dylan Vigue, Royals
  • 220th – Ryan Wynn, Mariners
  • 237th – Kolby Branch, Rangers
  • 243rd – Matt Scott, Guardians
  • 258th – Tre Phelps, Pirates
  • 356th – Caleb Jameson, Diamondbacks
  • 392nd – Kenny Ishikawa, Reds
  • 607th – Brennan Hudson, Cubs

Not a bad draft day…what remains to be seen is whether some of these Dawgs with remaining eligibility will take the MLB route or come back for another year of NIL. As an example, Phelps’ slotted value is $214k, and although NIL deals for Phelps aren’t publicly available, it’s estimated his NIL and sponsorships were in the seven figure range. Who knows if Buc-Ees will get involved with the team next year, either.

It’s just business, right?

Feeding the Trees in the Portal

I wonder if Wes is doing some good work in the portal again?

Yes, it seems like he has. Yesterday was a banner day for the Diamond Dawgs, as you can see here:

Let’s get back to Omaha and make a little more noise with the bats next time, mmkay?

Go Dawgs!

Your Golden Rhino

Congratulations, and well-deserved.

I guess when you’re the only catcher in NCAA history to record 30 stolen bases and 30 homeruns in a season, you’re kinda special, huh?

For those keeping score, that’s Wes’s second Golden Spikes winner in three years. And Wes has only been with the program for three years.

You’ll Have to Go to College, Slugger

Hmmm…

If passed, the days of the high schooler signing for millions and heading into the farm system are over, and college baseball programs will actually hold a little additional leverage over NIL compensation, knowing they won’t have to compete with a MLB signing bonus for younger prospects.

Well, at least, that’s the hope. Since money’s involved, I’m sure someone will step in and screw it up royally by offering a signing bonus-esque offer to a high school kid…but I wonder who will be the first to do it?

Or Miami. You already know it to be true.

So It Goes

Live by the homerun sword, die by it. What a ride.

I don’t want to hear anything about swag this, unbuttoned that, they represented the G well. And the CWS is the most challenging tournament to navigate in college sports.

Go Dawgs.

Three In a Row…

Baseball is a funny sport. As we’ve seen as Braves fans, you can be a team on fire and just like that…go cold. If you’d told me that Georgia would have only used two pitchers in two games, I’d be pretty confident we’d be 2-0 and sitting pretty, but as it stands, we’re facing elimination tonight against a Texas team that just walloped the hell out of Alabama, 14-2, and I’m sure is hungry for redemption against the Dawgs.

Aside from a Lujo homerun and a timely Ishikawa hit against the Horns (and aside from Volchko’s masterpiece), the offense was spotty on Saturday night and was nearly non-existent on Monday against Oklahoma. Three solo homeruns, Phelps seems to have disappeared, hitting sub-200 in the tournament, and it’s pretty clear that pitchers are working carefully around Jackson whenever he comes to the plate.

So, tonight at 8 pm, we get another shot and we’ll have to beat Texas again, and let’s not think about what comes after, just what’s in front of us. Fortunately, we have lots of fresh arms…but what about hungry bats? Just know if we lose tonight, we’ll be inundated with a lot of retribution from a fan base that’s on par with Tennessee an Tech when it comes to “gotchas”.

Dear Sour Power Dawgs…get that mojo back tonight!

Dawgs Getting Ready in Omaha

You think this game is important or something? Take it from the Sooner killer himself.

Now I realized watching Saturday that Wes isn’t a big guy…Kirby is my height (5’11” on a good day)…but check out Stretch Smart here.

Marrying a Lady Bulldawg basketball player has its benefits, no?

Especially when they are a forward/guard who is six feet tall

.Note: Andrew is listed as 6’2”. Colton Nussmeier is listed as 6’3.5”. I’d imagine we’ll see Andrew under center in Athens in about four years.

Hopefully tonight’s game isn’t a pulse raiser like The Rose Bowl…but if it ends in a Dawgs win, I’ll take it.

Go you Sour Power Dawgs.

Message Board Geniuses: We Shoulda Been There

Mississippi State has quickly risen as the cream of the bitter crop this baseball season. Watching their evolution into the Top Tiers of SEC sh*tposters, it started before the Georgia series a few months back and hasn’t abated since.

And now that they’re sitting at home and watching the College World Series from the discomfort of their own homes, thinking they’d be beating Ole Miss on the field or off the field at Rocco’s, they are becoming…well, paranoid.

And they’re quite bitter, to say the least.

“There may be a book written about this someday though” is some fascinating stuff to behold, especially since the only folks in the SEC interested in writing books about shoulda-coulda-woulda’s are the Bobby Hillbillies north of us.

College World Series Game 1 Highlight Reel

Always fun to relive moments like this, so enjoy this with your Monday cup of joe and let’s hope we see more of these over the next couple of weeks.

Caden Aoki gets the call for Game 2 against the Sooners, and will feature Branch on Branch in the matchup.

Game time is 7 pm on ESPN, in case you’re wondering. Given how that’s gone the past few days, maybe it’ll be more like 8 pm.

In case you weren’t aware, our Dawgs are on an epic run, and it’s been a minute since we’ve lost a game, you know?

Go Dawgs!
