So It Goes

Live by the homerun sword, die by it. What a ride.

I don’t want to hear anything about swag this, unbuttoned that, they represented the G well. And the CWS is the most challenging tournament to navigate in college sports.

Go Dawgs.

  1. The bats were shipped to a cyro chamber in Omaha. Especially the 1,2 and 3 hitters in the lineup.

I feel about like I did on 1/8/18. Program is in great shape but it’s extremely painful to get so close and not win it all.

  2. It’s been an awesome ride. DGD’s. We won’t have another SEC season like this for a long time. These guys were a blast to watch!

  3. Really good season, but can’t help but wonder what would have been if Oklahoma hadn’t gotten hot in the end and our bats, or the stadium, I’ll blame the stadium, hadn’t turned cold and flat on us. I really do feel like a lot of our outfield hits would have sailed over the fence in most other stadiums. That’s exactly what I’m going to tell my coworkers today!

  4. Bats just went cold at the wrong time. Fun great season though. Probably either the second or third best season in program history.

If had to pick a team to lose to it would have definitely been OU over Texas or Bama. I like Skip Johnson and the OU team is likeable. Thanks to the Diamond Dogs for allowing us to own Texas a bit longer.

Congrats on a great season to the SEC Regular Season Champions, SEC Tournament Champions, Athens Regional Champions, band Athens Super Regional Champions who set a program record for wins a season.

    Go DOGS!

  5. Any season that includes a run to Omaha is a great season. Hate that it came to an end, but I love what Wes Johnson is building in Athens. Who would have thought that our bats would be the reason this season ended? Great year and I can’t wait for next spring.

  6. Holy cow I went to bed when the Sooners were piling it on in the 8th. Didn’t know this happened. Pulled it up in bed on my iPad just in time to see DJ crying in the dugout. I noticed we’d scored another run but missed that it was a branch dinger. Damn allergies killing me this morning

  7. Was a great year, top 4 in country. Further more, beat Texas twice & North Carolina knocked Tech out.

  8. Winning the SEC regular season then the league tournament made this a great season. Who expected pitching to carry this team in the series. It was a lot of fun much more than I expected this spring.

Baseball has always featured streaky teams getting hot or cold. When you’re hot you’re hot and when you’re not you’re not.

    • Agreed. The SEC championships were great, eliminating Texas from championships never gets old. The best post season in some time. Ending the seaon on a L always stings. H I wever, I’ll look back on this season as a good one.

  9. Great season anyway! Still can’t win World Series hitting .167. We are in good shape in the program, just gotta keep Wes around! Also takes up some time to gear up for them Dawgs in the fall. Not many times had to stress in June, but l like it!!! Go Dawgs!!

  10. Last night was what I expected to happen at some point. Cold bats and the pitching dam finally broke. Just glad it happened in Omaha rather than Athens.

Keep chopping, Wes. SEC champs … run rule the SEC tournament championship game. Great season … wish it was lasting a little longer.

  11. There are only 2 schools who made the CFP, March Madness, and College World Series this year… us and Alabama. Looking at the whole picture for UGA athletics, I can’t remember a better overall year for the big 3. Anyone who holds a natty or bust mentality in any sport is destined for more disappointment than joy.

  12. What an incredible season! This is not the way anyone wanted it to end but I’m grateful to Wes & the players for the many great moments they gave us this year. We’ve gone a little farther each season, maybe next season we can take the final step!

  13. Oklahoma caught the proverbial lightning in a bottle. I double-checked and the Land Thieves weren’t even in the top 16 seeds prior to the regionals. But they got Tech and eventually got us. Best of luck to ’em. UNC’s no joke. Tip of the cap to the boys; many thanks for an entertaining year full of accomplishments that came up just a little short.

    • If OU wins the whole thing, the 24 team playoff proponents will be saying this is why we need double the expansion for football. My response would be look at regular season TV ratings and the fact that regular season attendance is low. Do you want that for football?

      • I was actually thinking about inserting a blurb about that in the post above but left it out. You’re 100% correct that some could make the argument that a lowly seeded team in one sport should influence football….I hope not. I’m not a conference loyalist so my solution….go Heels!

  14. Not saying it would have made a difference, ultimately, but I wish they would do bracket crossover games again for the losers bracket. We should’ve played Troy and Texas should’ve played WVU. It’s kind of the same argument as re-seeding after the regionals but I believe it’s fair to say that our side of the bracket was stacked while UNC was by far the superior team on their side.

  15. I enjoyed watching them in Omaha. I think it slipped away when we lost to Ok. the first game. We easily could have won it, but shit happens. That caused us to have too many back to back games which caught up to us.

Only good thnk about going to the loser bracket was getting to send Texass home!

  16. Reminded me of a vintage 90s Braves team: clearly probably the best team in baseball, bats go cold and we get some inexplicable pitching issues at the absolute worst time. I thought after winning the SEC and the Conference Tournament we might romp through Omaha. Selah.

On a brighter note, my son and I got to witness them beating Auburn in Auburn and MS State in Hoover…and the youngster got to meet the whole team! Great group of boys, and love Lil Wes, too!

  17. “Reminded me of a vintage 90s Braves team: clearly probably the best team in baseball, bats go cold and” – the opponents get all-time pitching performances from players not well known.

We survived the 90s Braves, we survived 40 years and went through Sabanbama. It’ll make winning it all sweeter when the time comes!

    Go Dawgs!
