The weekend that was at MBG – week 4 edition

I was on a plane for much of the day yesterday, but Delta’s WiFi on an international flight allowed me to watch some ball and stay on top of the geniuses of the message board universe.

Not sure Kevin Bacon can ease the IPTAY crowd now

Let’s start today’s trip for a 4th(!) week in the Upstate of South Carolina where Fran Brown drops a bomb on the Clemson football program.

Syracuse goes into “Death Valley” and rips Clemson a new one 34-21. The Orange jumped on the Tiggers early and then held them at bay for the remainder of the game. I wonder if Fran spent a little time with Kirby during the Dawgs’ off week to gather some intel for game planning.

On the real topic, Dabo deserves to go out at Clemson on his own terms, but it’s apparent now that “all is not well” on Lake Hartwell and the Clemson faithful are not going to stay calm.

Other potential losses loom on Clemson’s schedule, and the path to Charlotte appears like the last stage to the summit of Everest.

Of course, the team they play next Saturday has a set of challenges of their own … let’s head to the land of the Mouse to check in on the Tar Heels and the Belichick Experiment.

83-104. That was Bill Belichick’s career record in the NFL without Tom Brady at quarterback.

I hate to say it to the Tar Heel fans who thought the supposed GOAT would make them into a college football power, but Tom Brady doesn’t have any college eligibility remaining. Also, I doubt UNC will get the treatment from the ACC officials that Belichick got for years in New England because of Brady.

They have been smoked by the 2 teams they’ve played that had a pulse. While Clemson may be reeling, I can’t imagine things are going to get better on Franklin Street in a couple of weeks.

Let’s head down to South Florida to check in on the mental state of the Hogtown Handbags.

First … delusion (3 days ago).

Today … misery.

What job is better now … Florida or Ole Miss? If Junior wants to be able to do whatever he wants, there’s no way he takes on the pressure cooker that is the Florida head coaching job. Crazy expectations, a fan base that believes Nattys (and the Light kind) are their birthright, and three currently top 10 rival programs around them or no expectations, good money and a nicer place to live. Give me Oxford over Hogtown any day.

To the game, Mario Cristobal and Carson Beck (that pick gave me 2024 flashbacks) tried to find a way to let the Gators steal one. I’m not sold on this team at all. It’s hard to believe they are #2 in the rankings this week. I think there are multiple teams in the top 10 that could throttle the Canes.

Sun Belt Billy looked resigned to his fate on the sideline last night. DJ Lagway is a disaster (12/23 for 61 yards and a QBR of 21), but their defense plays hard. They have 2 weeks to prepare for the Archduke and the Shorthorns. Could that be Billy’s final stand before entering the Kirby rehab center for fired coaches?

Let’s move on to Norman to check on the Auburn Family.

9 sacks allowed and they are complaining about playing straight up. I’m guessing someone in Norman has made up a “Honk if you’ve sacked Jackson Arnold” bumper sticker this morning. The SEC officiating responds regarding the play that was likely the cause of this genius’s post.

Was the play in question the difference in the game? Mathematically, the answer to that question is yes. Brent Venables would have likely blown a gasket if Auburn had scored on a similar play against his defense. It was low class, and Auburn fans have a right to complain about it although something like that costing them a game makes this guy smile given the karma of $Cam Newton and Nick Fairley.

You give up 9 sacks with a supposedly mobile quarterback? The OL coach should be tarmac-ed as a result. 287 yards of offense should be what the “geniuses” of Greater Opelika should be complaining about especially with a head coach who is supposed to be an offensive-minded coach.

Let’s head a little east to CoMo to check in on the other side of the complete implosion of football in the Palmetto State.

I agree with this genius … South Carolina doesn’t belong in the SEC. Neither do Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M and Missouri. Maybe the Lamecocks could join the Sun Belt or Conference USA. I’m guessing they could win one of those leagues.

Missouri ran over, through and around for 287 yards against the South Carolina defense while holding the Gamecocks to negative yards rushing. Ouch. 14 penalties for nearly 100 hidden yards added to the challenge of losing this game.

After next week’s home game against Kentucky, South Carolina stares into the abyss from playing 5 currently ranked teams in a row. Not good, Shane, not good.

While not officially MBG, we have to check on the Archduke of Austin.

Good grief, Arch. I’m sure this is this way you talked trash against the private school kids you played against in Louisiana. If something says, “Act like you’ve been there before,” this is it. Douche move.

We end today in Memphis where the end appears to be near for our favorite OL coach for a post I really didn’t want to write.

I love Sam Pittman. I wish he had never left Athens. Kirby only hired Jim Chaney because that was the only way to get the Pitt Boss to leave Arkansas to coach on a staff with a first time head coach. I don’t blame Pittman for leaving to take the job. It was truly life changing money for a coach toward the end of his career.

I wish him Godspeed in whatever is next whether that’s staying in the game or heading to the lake.

Thank you, Sam. You’ll always be welcome in Athens and probably would never have to buy a beer in the Classic City’s limits.

That’s what I saw this weekend. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Manning Up

Late posts again today, scamps. My apologies. Here’s some happy Friday hate posting, courtesy of our friends from Austin, Texas.

Never mind the wins and the quality of opponents, but let’s especially ignore the idea that something just don’t look right about Manning in his first few games of the 2025 season.

I’m sure they’ll take game four results and start comparing him to Peyton or something, but Texas has quickly surpassed Tennessee as perhaps the most delusional fanbase in the SEC, and that’s saying a hell of a lot.

The weekend that was at MBG – week 1 edition

The brick-throwing Bammers aren’t either, Kalen.

Yes, I know we still have games to play on this Labor Day, but I don’t care about TCU & UNC (if something about the Tar Heels comes up, I’ll probably edit this post). Most games went true to form, but we still have plenty of #MeltdownAlert and #FireEverybody posts to chuckle about.

Nowhere better to get started with this week’s trip than Tallahassee to check on the mental state of Bammer Nation. I knew the panhandle would be a stop this week. I just thought the reason would be different. There was plenty of ammunition for this stop, but I found this be to be the most hilarious.

When Alabama looks to Georgia Tech for its next head coach, you know it’s hit close to rock bottom in the Yellowhammer State (I wish the Nole fans would have sung Rammer Jammer right back at them on Saturday evening). The last time Alabama hired a Fech man, it started with running off the guy who followed a legend and ended with a contract fight after winning an SEC title. I know some of our readers think a lot of Brent Key … I’m not one of them.

Bama got outmuscled on both lines of scrimmage by a team coached by a guy who had to be desperate. It’s too early for this to be an indictment of Bama or a coronation of FSU, but Saturday’s loss broke the internet.

Let’s move on to the game of the century this year in Columbus to check in on the “Texas is back” crowd.

Texass fans are so used to getting every break that they blame this loss on SEC officiating. Hey, Shorthorns, do you remember the temper tantrum your fans threw last year in Austin resulting in an overturned call on something that can’t be overturned once the ball is marked for play? I thought so.

How about blame the coaching and the offense (Sark’s specialty) for only scoring 7 points? If you said on Friday Ohio State would only score 14, I’m sure the Texas coaching staff would say they would leave the Shoe with a win.

If this game is the canary in the coal mine, Texas isn’t going to go through the SEC unscathed and may lose more than 1 conference game. The Red River Shootout looks questionable, and trips to Athens and Hogtown will be no picnic.

Let’s head to South Florida to check in on the leprechauns who didn’t find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Does this genius realize Miami is in the schedule due to the ACC arrangement the Irish has as a partial member?

I give Carson Beck an A for how he played in the rain on Sunday night. For the most part, he looked totally in control, and his arm and mental game seem to have recovered nicely. Where was that Carson Beck for much of last year in Athens? That Carson Beck is a day 1 or 2 selection with his arm and the way he took care of the ball.

On the topic of the post, Notre Dame runs into an equally talented (and healthy) team and loses again. Don’t look now, Irish, but a Texas A&M team comes into South Bend next and can beat you. I think it may be safe to say Notre Dame’s season may already be on the brink. Will a 2 loss team that doesn’t have the ability to play in a conference championship game get the benefit of the doubt in November?

Let’s move on out west to the Rose Bowl to check in on the team that should have been the Dawgs’ opponent this weekend.

Utah takes ucLa behind the woodshed on B1G After Dark to announce that the end of the Whittingham era isn’t there yet. The reason for this post is twofold. First, the Bruins ducked us because they knew what was coming, and they still got it from a different source. Second, Nico left Tennessee because of the “offense.” After yesterday, maybe his camp needs to look inward for the problem – 183 yards of total offense and a 50.4 QBR.

Maybe Bobby Hill wasn’t the problem after all.

Let’s end today’s trip in the South Carolina upstate to check in on Tyler from Spartanburg and the fans of the Greater Anderson Cow College.

Hey, Clemson, Deshaun Watson or Trevor Lawrence isn’t walking into the football facility. Cade Klubnik once again showed he isn’t the game-changing quarterback necessary for Dabo to win at highest level. I’m not sure what being in the ACC had to do with their loss (see FSU-Bama). What I did see is exactly what I saw last Labor Day – an offensive line overwhelmed by SEC defensive front 7 talent.

What did you see this weekend on the boards that gave you a good laugh? Let us know in the comments.

Dynasty, Interrupted

Added chaser, because everything’s bigger in Texas:

Now we see why Sark went with a banged up Ewers all season long. After yesterday’s egg laying in “the greatest college football game of all time” (per the pointless drivel called commentary), I’m not so sure that Texas will be the offensive juggernaut people were making them out to be. Granted, tOSU has a great defense and a former 3x Super Bowl winner DC in Matt Patricia, but aside from that, Manning looked confused, out of his element, and his mechanics were, well, confusing. Side armed throws for no reason and errant throws were not a good look for the Royal Family of Quarterbacks.

Hey, at least ticket prices for home games might be coming down now.

A Lone Star is Born

Ladies and gentlemen, let’s go ahead and cancel the 2025 season. The Athletic has deemed Texas to be the new dynasty.

So let’s see…

Recruiting rankings, Texas, first five years of Sark:

  • 2025 – #1
  • 2024 – #6 – SEC Championship Appearance, CFP Appearance
  • 2023 – #3 – Big XII Champions, CFP Appearance
  • 2022 – #5
  • 2021 – #15

Recruiting rankings, Alabama, first five years of Saban:

  • 2007 – #11
  • 2008 – #1 – SEC Championship Appearance (lost to National Champion Florida)
  • 2009 – #1 – SEC Champs, National Champions
  • 2010 – #6
  • 2011 – #1 – SEC Champs, National Champions

If going by a mere recruiting and funding formula, yeah, they might look a little alike, except for the whole national champions thingy. This was also BCS era versus CFP era, but I digress. But, wait…

Recruiting rankings, Georgia, first five years of Kirby:

  • 2016 – #11
  • 2017 – #3 – SEC Champs, National Championship Appearance
  • 2018 – #1 – SEC Championship Appearance
  • 2019 – #2 – SEC Championship Appearance (lost to National Champion LSU)
  • 2020 – #1

It remains to be seen, but Georgia rattled off back-to-back national championships after 2020, and Alabama did the same after 2010. Aside from a Big XII championship, it’s hard to see where the money and recruiting has translated to on-field success in Austin, especially considering that 2024 featured a light schedule for Texas outside of Georgia (need I remind anyone that they lost twice to the Bipolar Bulldawgs of 2024).

If they’re going to be the new Alabama, one has to wonder if Georgia ever was the new Alabama, or if Texas is attempting to be the new Georgia?

More from Russo:

Can someone remind me…didn’t they do the same drooling and hyping of the Longhorns last year? And still, I have no answer as to why Sark played an injured Ewers all year long when he had Archduke Manning ready and healthy…just to watch Ewers basically hand the ball off to Jack Sawyer in the semifinal to allow the Suckeyes on to the Natty.

Maybe the days of stumbling as a 12-point favorite at home may be over, but until Texas shows they can beat the big boys in the big games, you’ll have to pardon me if I don’t trade the houndstooth hoopla for Longhorn lore quite yet.

Kirby’s GOTTA be loving this off-season chatter.

“Until the very end” might be the actual start when it comes to recruiting in Austin, Texas.

I hope he knows what he’s getting in to…

Maybe in Texas, “RBU” stands for “revenue brought you” to Austin, amirite?

Who Is This Maniac?

And now, for a word from your local NIL collective.

Gotta say he’s maybe playing on the wrong side of the ball, and I don’t mean offense/defense.

Stay frosty, Kirby.

Johnson flipped his commitment ten days-ish after committing to Georgia. Both Atkinson and Johnson had taken multiple trips to Athens over the years, and not unlike Justus Terry made the jump at the 11th hour.

Additional chaser:

All I can say is Sarkisian needs to win the SEC or better with all these top recruits and the money being thrown at them.

Your Monday Hype Video – Texas 2024, Part 1

I figured we could all use some adrenaline for a Monday morning.

The media team at Georgia doesn’t get enough credit. This was pure gold.

Go ‘Dawgs!

Wednesday Wonderings: Hate to Admit They’re Right

I believe I’ve said this same thing about Archduke Manning before, but it sounded pretty succinct and to the point from none other that SOS:

We recently opined on the nemesis that is Spurrier in last week’s posts, but this is more of a question for Wednesday Wonderings:

What was the most significant time you had to go back and admit someone was right about something involving you or your thoughts? Was it a friend or an enemy, and which stings the most?

My first thought involves my first wife. Hate to say my mom and dad were right about that vampire of money and soul, though it worked out for the better in the end. Still stings though.

How about you?
