Dancing Shoes and the St. Louis Blues

The bracket has come out, and Georgia will be dancing as an 8 seed against the St. Louis Billikens in Buffalo.

Also, in other news, the Lady Dawgs are also dancing again.

The men’s team is making back-to-back appearances while the Lady Dawgs are making their first appearance since 2023. Also, another fun fact:

Let’s just try to break the trend of losing in the first round, shall we? That part is getting old.

Oh, and it’s worth noting…the Barner Basketball School didn’t make the tournament.

As always, Auburn sucks.

Is It Football Season Yet?

First, there was the let down that was the Hoop Dawgs losing to Ole Piss in the SEC Tournament (PSA: Ole Miss just beat Alabama and is advancing…could they be the 2026 version of the 2008 Georgia Bulldogs in the Tornado Dome?). Then our Diamond Dawgs forgot about situational hitting and dropped their SEC opener to Tennessee last night, 7-4. But here’s the image from before the game:

Maybe Kirby needs to come coach the baseball team, too. Something tells me the swag and the dugout shenanigans would dry up quickly and, somehow, we’d be winning bigger and better. The swag and “feed the trees” would give way to “keep chopping trees” and we’d be barreling over first basemen and catchers just to prove a point. Send Javon Bullard in as a baserunner and let loose the dogs of war. Can’t hit a ball, but can hit a person.

I digress.

In some positive news, it looks like the Gym Dawgs are making a comeback.

Beating Alabama is always satisfying, and if Wes can’t right the ship at Foley, let Kirby come in as a guest manager for the Alabama series.

Sigh. Go Dawgs.

Another Year, But At Least the Disappointment was on a Thursday Night

Look on the bright side, scamps. At least we didn’t go out and finish the season on a Wednesday night. Georgia got off to a really slow start, scoring only 20 points in the first half, but made a respectable and furious comeback in the second half.

However, it seems the ghost of Penn Wagers was having the last laugh.

Somto got a flagrant 2 and got ejected. Obvious goal tends (they literally bounced off the backboard before being swatted) were ignored. In the day and age where the game is stopped by multiple reviews and goes three hours in length, nary a moment was spent reflecting on what was and what could’ve been.

Regardless, I refuse to be an Ohio State or Alabama fan here, as we should’ve played like Georgia in the first half and less like a high school team, so there’s that. Last year, we had a slow start in the NCAA Tourney, so maybe we got it out of our system.

It is what it is. Let it be Ole Miss that we never want to see in the postseason from this point forward. Call it progress, though, because we played on a Thursday instead of starting on a Wednesday at the bottom rungs of the conference ladder. I’ll take it.

Still, March Madness awaits. We’ll be a likely 8 or 9 seed, either way, the first round will be a fight.

Let’s hope we’re a touch more awake when the Big Dance starts instead of searching around for our glass slipper. All glory is fleeting, the loss is yesterday’s news, and we still have one more game to play.

Go Dawgs.

Ugh, It’s Ole Miss…Again

Texas and Ole Miss played last night, with the lower-seeded Rebels coming out on top in what was pretty much and easy win for Ole Miss from start to finish.

Both teams beat Georgia in the regular season, Ole Miss with a last second tip-in in overtime, and Texas with one of our few blowout losses (though we got them in the second game).

Ole Miss is scrappy, fast, and seemed to be a tougher matchup for us than Texas. We’ll get a chance to see if we’re playing better now than earlier this season, which I think we are, and how ready we are for the Big Dance. Fingers crossed.

Projecting the SEC Basketball Tournament

We’re a week away from the start of the SEC Tournament, and there’s a weekend of games left to determine the final seeding. One Twixer took a stab at predicting the final games (good luck with that), but here’s what they came up with, and I like it.

First, if the following results fall where they may like this:

Then the SEC Tournament bracket would look like this:

What’s absolutely delightful about this is that everyone on Georgia’s side of the bracket are teams the Dawgs beat. Auburn was a nail biter, we got destroyed by Texas once and won the rebound game, and we beat Arkansas handily.

Could the Hoop Dawgs make a deep run? Could Georgia end with 24 to 25 wins? It’s all possible, but it greatly depends on what team shows up to the Tourney and whether or not White can keep the egos and psychology in check with the team heading into the next couple of weeks knowing they’ve locked in a NCAA Tournament berth.

Finish the Drill, Keep Choppin’, Feed the Trees, or whatever catch phrase you’d like to inject here. Just finish strong…and how other-worldly would it be to win the SEC Championship in football and basketball in the same season?

Either way, I can say with confidence that I won’t be watching it happen.

Go Dawgs.

It’s Christmas in March: Dawgs Down Bama

God bless you, Mike White.

While Kirby remains Portal avoidant, Mike White has utilized the Portal and NIL wisely. With one game remaining on the road in Starkvegas, Georgia has a chance to finish the season above .500 in conference play for the first time in a decade, since Mark Fox’s 2015-2016 campaign. Mind you, back then, the conference was perceptually worse, with only the Top 2 teams in the conference, Number 10 Kentucky and Number 15 Texas A&M being ranked. Georgia didn’t even get an NCAA tournament bid in 2016, either.

This is a different SEC Basketball conference nowadays, and Alabama came to Stegeman ranked 16th in the nation and on the heels of an eight game win streak. Kanon Catchings went off with 32 points followed by Blue Cain’s respectable 16 points.

Since many of you, like me, are avoidant of watching, here’s a YouTube of game highlights.

Let’s face it, watching Georgia beat Alabama in anything nowadays is cathartic.

Go Dawgs!

Another Word, But Not a Watch, for the Hoop Dawgs

This is intriguing.

From georgiadogs.com:

  • The Bulldogs have accomplished their third-consecutive 20-win campaign. This has only been achieved two other times in Georgia program history (1996-98 and 2014-16).
  • This win brought Georgia to the 20-win mark for the 16th time overall but for only the sixth occasion during the regular season.

Reminder, the 1996-1998 years were peak Tubby ball. I’d dare to say Tubby Smith was a good basketball coach, yes?

Before We Dump on The Hoop Dawgs

Consider this:

Tom Crean has this guy on our team and went .500 and 5-13 in SEC play. His last season he won one game in the SEC before Mike White took over (2022-2023 season).

For context, White has lead Georgia from that to a .500 year his first year, and posted these results:

  • 2022-2023: 16-16, 6-12 in SEC play
  • 2023-2024: 20-13, 6-12 in SEC play (NIT)
  • 2024-2025: 20-13, 8-10 in SEC play (NCAA tourney bid)
  • 2025-2026: 19-9, 7-8 in SEC play (with games against South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi State remaining, likely 21-10, 9-9 in SEC play withstanding SEC Tournament games).

For all the frustration that Brooks hired Florida’s scraps, White has done an admirable and steadily better job since his arrival, whereas Crean turned the program into a flaming dumpster fire and a joke in the SEC.

It might not be Tubby ball, but it’s a damn sight better than Crean ball. Amirite?

Wednesday Woes in Athens

Welp.

Didn’t watch, in keeping with my promise, but from what I could see on the socials it sounds like the refs jobbed us in Nashville…but if we’re going to be an elite program, it shouldn’t be hinging on officiating at any point in a game. Those are the breaks, I guess…Dawgs lost to Vanderbilt, 88-80.

And, to make matters worse, as Dawg fans were enjoying the sight of Tech baseball losing to crosstown foe Georgia State on Tuesday, which saw three other ranked baseball programs lose midweek games to unranked, lesser programs, in walks Troy to ruin the Diamond Dawgs’ week.

Note – for the second straight game, Tre Phelps walked out wearing orange.

I know the modern young baseball player likes their swag, but orange on any aspect of the Georgia uniform should be outlawed and result in a fine out of an athlete’s NIL funds, at a minimum.

On to the weekend.
