Before We Dump on The Hoop Dawgs

Consider this:

Tom Crean has this guy on our team and went .500 and 5-13 in SEC play. His last season he won one game in the SEC before Mike White took over (2022-2023 season).

For context, White has lead Georgia from that to a .500 year his first year, and posted these results:

  • 2022-2023: 16-16, 6-12 in SEC play
  • 2023-2024: 20-13, 6-12 in SEC play (NIT)
  • 2024-2025: 20-13, 8-10 in SEC play (NCAA tourney bid)
  • 2025-2026: 19-9, 7-8 in SEC play (with games against South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi State remaining, likely 21-10, 9-9 in SEC play withstanding SEC Tournament games).

For all the frustration that Brooks hired Florida’s scraps, White has done an admirable and steadily better job since his arrival, whereas Crean turned the program into a flaming dumpster fire and a joke in the SEC.

It might not be Tubby ball, but it’s a damn sight better than Crean ball. Amirite?

  1. I’m class of65, and have seen a lot of BB at Georgia. I’m very happy and pleased to have Mike White as our coach! You should be too!!!

    • Since you are class of 1965 you saw a lot of crappy basketball in the crappy Woodruff Hall. Do you ever get rained on during a game?

  2. Mike White has never gone .500 in the conference in four years at Georgia. The four years before that he was barely 500. If mediocrity is your standard then he’s doing a fantastic job. Florida says thank you.

    • Or…
the team has improved incrementally each season that Mike White has coached here. So he hasn’t plateaued yet. Maybe this is as good as he gets, or maybe he continues to improve. I’m of the opinion we should allow him to continue to improve and when he doesn’t, then we make a move.

    • Lord have mercy he is coaching in a tough league and took over a time at rock bottom. We are getting better but our opponents are improving, too. We have to play Florida and Auburn twice a year every year. Auburn was a final 4 team last year snd a number 2 seed, number 4 seed and 7? seed. Last year Florida was NCAA champions and has been in the tournament in 2024.
Every team has improved. Our NET is as of this morning 33rd in the country which is progress over previous seasons.
We are improving relative to our conference foes.

  3. White has done a solid job. As the calendar turns to March, we are in the conversation to be in the tournament again. I won’t complain about that.

Would I love to 25-3 and playing for a regular season championship and a high seed? Absolutely.

I also know Rome wasn’t built in a day. Crean should have been fired immediately after Ant Man’s one season.

  4. Well, Kirby demanded excellence from BM – and forced them to deliver. It paid off huge.

If you’re not following that same model in the other sports, why expect outsized results?

    • Football pays all the bills here. If White made demands like Kirby, he would be shown the door here. Whoever coaches our basketball team will have to win first before getting the support the football team gets.

    • CKS fallout kinda’ makes everyone better, including UGA decision making…heaven forbid, should a true UGA alum ever git a seat at the head of the table…GO DAWGS!!

  5. To answer the question jp, “Yes, you are right”. However, PeeWee is not taking us to the promised land! He is what he is. Gordon Solie/Ozam caps it best above. If mediocrity is your (not yours personally) standard, then PeeWee is your dude.

  6. I definitely like what Mike White is doing. That doesn’t mean that I am satisfied because I think he can do better, but I am sure MW doesn’t feel satisfied, either. It’s tough for a basketball team to excel at a football school – see Russ’ comment about what pays the bills. And if you want to point to Florida and say, “Their B-ball team is doing well, and they are a football school”. My response to that: Is Florida really a football school? Spurrier aside when was Florida a consistent football force? The only rational question regarding MW is whether we can realistically do better with someone that is available. Kentucky thought they could do better than Calipari. How is that working for them so far? Right consecutive 20 win seasons is solid.

  7. I’m not ready to cheer mediocrity. If White can keep the core of this team and add a few key players next year then…maybe.

  8. We’re 6-1 when I pay absolutely no attention to games or results until the following day.

    • Make that 7-1 but, I almost blew it because I butt swiped my ESPN app by accident and saw we were up by 10 with 2:47 left. I waited 45 minutes before checking the final because 2:47 takes .05 eons.

  9. Georgia hiring Mike White is the equivalent of Louisville hiring Todd Grantham. The fanbase for each of the departing teams was very happy. I have followed Georgia basketball for nearly 50 years and even went to Albuquerque for the final four. Unlike many of our big-time football brethren, Georgia basketball has struggled to be relevant. In today’s pay to play world achieving this becomes even more difficult. Mediocrity may be the ceiling.

  10. Given the Fox/Crean years, I don’t think we should really be complaining as to be in the discussion of March Madness was the floor for Mike White. 3 consecutive 20 win seasons is nothing to discount given UGA’s hoop history. Whether MW is the coach to take us to the next level is still TBD, but he’s building a good base that either he or the next coach should be able to elevate. If he isn’t the coach to elevate us, I still look at him as Jim Donnan who is going to produce a Mark Richt/Kirby Smart level next hire. I’ll take it.

  11. At least White has gotten me to keep up with the hoop Dawgs for the first time in 20+ years. Still won’t watch them. He has to clean up the bad home losses before they become a serious SEC team. We’ll see how the season plays out. He has certainly been better than most we’ve had for a long time.

  12. Took the fam to the game today. It was a dunk fest as usual. Wilkins had a steal and fast break for a baby windmill that was sooo sick! My kids got pictures with the players when they were leaving Steg. Great day in Athens! Hopefully this and another or two gets us a decent seed. We’re building and I’m pretty okay with it.

  13. I don’t not see how anyone who actually watches the UGA basketball games every season sees no improvement in the play.

  14. Speaking for the class of 72 Adams hated UGA football and did his best to dismantle it
