Post Game Grades From A Dude Who Never Played Football – Gators Edition

I went to school at UGA in the mid-late 90’s…I’m never going to complain when we beat the Gators by 19 points with our defense absolutely dominating them from start to finish.

OK, the offense didn’t do anything to remind you of our national championship teams. We’ll certainly have to play better on that side of the ball to win any potential playoff games…or beat Ole Miss on Saturday for that matter. But, we’ll get to that shortly.

On to the grades…

Quarterback: Ummm…Game Management?

Georgia as a whole seemed hell bent on “not beating Georgia” this week and Kirby even said as much after the game. So, was Gunner’s play a result of a restricted game plan? Or, did Gunner have a case of the yips after the Auburn performance? I really don’t know.

This was definitely not the same Gunner that played so well against Alabama…neither statistically nor with the eye test. There were a couple of nice QB runs that helped his cause. The deep play action shot to Dandridge was fun, even if the ball was a little underthrown. He dropped one in the bucket to Reddell that would have been caught if it weren’t for the DPI that wasn’t called.

My biggest complaint, the batted balls are becoming a problem. I don’t know if it’s the long windup, his height or something else, but it seems we get 2-3 of these in every big game…and I don’t think it’s a coincidence. These have, or will become, drive killers in important games.

Still love the guy, but wouldn’t call this a special performance by any stretch.

Grade: C

Running Back: Super Solid

The running backs were responsible for 161 yards on 32 carries…5.0 YPC.

Dwight Lightning took a few big shots but still feels good for at least 1-2 explosive runs every game. Didn’t even realize he was leading the conference in YPC going into this game, and probably increased that gap with 8.6 YPC this weekend.

Nate Frazier looked like a much better version of himself than the Auburn contest…was hitting the hole more decisively, showed some quick feet and finished runs with some conviction. If we get him back to his form from the first few games of the season…that’s a hell of a 1-2 punch with he and Phillips.

Bo Walker found the endzone on a run that looked to be stopped…nice job spinning off the tackler to get that last yard. When we were watching the game, my son commented that he reminds him a little bit of Daijun Edwards…a little thicker, but similar style. Made some sense to me.

I don’t think this was the Alabama effort, but definitely an improvement over the Auburn game.

Grade: B

Offensive Line: Did Their Job

217 yards rushing at 5.2 YPC, only 1 sack given up on the day and generally able to win in short yardage situations.

One holding call that negated a 3rd down conversion, and another hold that I can’t believe wasn’t called when they showed the replay (Glover).

I think this group could have shined more if we would have stuck with our traditional running game a little bit more…couple of wasted possessions early in the second half where we…well, I don’t know what the hell we were doing.

That said, I think the OL played a little better than the total offensive statistics would imply. I think game plan and play calling didn’t help their cause, but those are the breaks.

Grade: B

Receivers (WR’s + TE’s): Guess We Didn’t Want To Use Them Much

I mean, we completed all of 13 passes the entire day, two of which went to running backs. Not a whole lot to grade on here.

Humphreys did have two very uncharacteristic drops, forgivable for a guy who does almost everything right when it comes to execution.

Dandridge caught a nice deep ball where he had to adjust to an underthrow.

Taylor was criminally underused for a man of his talents…but yes, the fumble was not his finest hour.

One of my worst preseason fears reared its ugly head when our all-world Tight End group caught all of 3 passes for 28 yards. I don’t really care who catches passes in the offense, but I find it very odd that we have a guy like Elyiss Williams, a certified freak of nature, and he finishes the game without even one catch (did he even get targeted?).

Definitely one of those games where I thought to myself, are we that scared to throw the ball downfield? I don’t want to downgrade this group for lack of opportunities, but they didn’t give me anything to work with either.

Grade: C

Defensive Line: Killed It

Absolute dominance.

Jadan Baugh is a damn good running back and he was outrushed by Gunner Stockton and held to 2.2 YPC on the day…rarely broke tackles either.

It didn’t matter what QB was playing for the Gators, they were getting pressured and didn’t have the kind of time they needed to make good decisions. Were it not for a 4th down 50/50 ball the Gators caught, this group might have been the catalyst for a complete shutout.

Elijah Griffin played a great game, possibly his finest as a Dawg.

So happy for Jordan Hall who has been able to stay healthy and bring a disruptive presence nearly every week.

Gabe Harris has been a bit quiet this year, but showed up bigger on Saturday and produced one of our sacks.

Valdin Sone got called for a roughing the passer, which negated a second Demello Jones interception, but even the most biased of Gator fans would have to admit that was a very generous call. I don’t know how these guys are supposed to know when they can tackle and when they can’t.

Most important, this group completely shut down the Gator running game and pushed the Gator OL backwards nearly the entire game. No complaints.

Grade: A

Linebackers: Dominant

Chris Cole…do I really need to go into detail? Didn’t think so.

If it’s possible to say, Raylen Wilson quietly gets about 8-10 tackles in conference games and makes at least one big play every week.

Justin Williams looked to be on the field a little bit more and made a nice impact on the game…dude would likely be 1st team All-Conference in any league…just happens to be playing behind a couple of total studs.

Quintavious Johnson kicked off the ultimate dagger with a sack and forced fumble that Cole took to the house. Love those impact plays.

And look at Khamari Brooks doing some un-freshman type things with 2 TFL’s.

This group is so good right now that we haven’t seen Zayden Walker in a while, and he is a legitimate playmaker when he’s on the field.

Embarrassment of riches…26 tackles, 2 sacks, 6.5 TFL’s, 1 fumble recovery, 1 TD…hard to do a lot better than that.

Grade: A+

Defensive Backs: Excellence

Welcome back KJ Bolden. This group clearly plays better when he’s on the field.

Ellis Robinson got what will be the easiest interception of his entire career. But, credit to him for being alert and in place to take advantage of one of the dumbest decisions you’ll ever see a QB make.

Khalil Barnes was excellent…only a couple of tackles, but his TFL was perfectly played and made another fantastic solo tackle on the day.

I’m a huge Resean Dinkins fan…guy plays with a ton of energy and is around the ball a lot. He hasn’t been perfect this year, but I think he’s the best option at the other Safety spot.

Demello had a great game with an interception (harder than it looks to catch something slightly deflected), another interception called back because officials don’t know how to officiate a quarterback getting tackled, and a half a tackle for loss. Maybe the most improved DB on the team?

What about Conley getting his first pick of the year? I know it looked easy, but watching the replay from the endzone cam showed how smart Conley was in drawing the QB into throwing that ball. It’s like he was shielding himself in some traffic and once he saw Tramell was going to throw, he immediately put himself in the perfect spot to make an easy interception…awesome awareness.

Grade: A

Special Teams: Not Again

Peyton Woodring…that first kick looked like me on the tee box with a large group watching me. The second kick wasn’t much better, but I guess it got through. Kickers are a funny sort…they can look unconsciously automatic for seasons, then miss one kick and it affects them the rest of the year (2011 Blair Walsh). Let’s hope Woodring gets back to his automatic self when he has attempts inside of 50.

Drew Miller can definitely hit some bombs and were it not for the roughing the kicker penalty, he’d have put one on the 1 yard line.

Sacovie had one really nice looking punt return, but had another moment that almost gave the ball right back to Florida. He just doesn’t seem comfortable or super decisive when the ball lands short, or he has to run laterally to get in position. It reminds me a little bit of the days when Jose Canseco was playing Right Field for the A’s and a routine fly ball came his way.

More bad than good and we need to get back to the usual standard of special teams being so good we don’t even think about them.

Grade: C

Offensive Coaching: Playing Not To Lose

I’m sure a bunch of football coaches would brow beat me for my thoughts on offensive coaching in this game, call me a keyboard warrior, a guy who has never been in the arena, etc. Don’t care…didn’t like what we did on offense in this game.

Yes, I loved the final outcome and can appreciate that we didn’t want to beat ourselves following the Auburn game where we kicked our own ass. I’m not saying we needed to take a lot of risk on Saturday, but that looked like 1940’s football.

I don’t think that is a sustainable offensive strategy moving forward. What do I mean by that?

Well, for starters…we threw 8 WR screens on Saturday and amassed about 10 total yards on those plays, not to mention a fumble on one of them and another was incomplete. Think about that, of our 13 completions, 7 of them were WR screens. I’ve been more than vocal about my dislike of the WR screen as a general rule, and I have no clue why Bobo loves this play more than I love a cold Mountain Dew on a hot Summer day.

For a QB that we’re trying to keep healthy, we ran an awful lot of designed QB runs. I love the value of Gunner’s legs as much as anyone, but more than a few of those runs were plays we have perfectly good RB’s to handle in those situations.

As mentioned earlier, why on earth do we have all of these TE’s if we’re going to throw the ball to them only 3-4 times a game?

We’ve seen that Bobo can pitch a great game. I thought we were going to make a statement after playing poorly on offense for much of the Auburn game. I was wrong. I’d say we had 3 nice looking drives in the game…against an average looking defense. I feel like we’re driving a Ferrari and keeping it in 2nd gear.

In games like this, am I the only person who wants to let our coaching staff know, “It’s OK to blow a team out.”

I’ll leave everyone with this question, if it were not for a couple of early Florida gifts, is this game a lot closer?

Grade: D+ (Sorry, not sorry)

Defensive Coaching: On The Other Hand…

Schumann had these guys completely ready to play from the opening bell.

Guys were flying around, playing physical as hell, taking advantage of opportunities that came their way, making Florida earn every single yard they could get while the game was still undecided.

If we played like that against Auburn, we’d have blown their doors off.

If we continue to play offense like we did on Saturday, our defense will have to play this good every game to be a playoff team. Let’s hope we can see both units play well against Ole Miss on Saturday because if we get a W in that one, all but guaranteed a playoff spot.

Grade: A

Enjoy the rest of your week and Go Dawgs!

  1. I think once they saw we could win without opening the playbook they decided to shut it and only show looks they had already shown. I expect to see a different O for Ole Miss.

    • I sure hope so. We will definitely need it. Hopefully this defense shows up in Oxford.

Good summary. I have no disagreements. I’m of the belief that Kirby hammered in “Dawgs don’t beat Dawgs” so much that it affected the offense and they played tight. Plus, Bobo fell back into his rut with WR screens (8 total? Don’t you mean 8 in the first quarter?). I do think Kirby took the air out of the ball second half for sure because it became obvious the only way Florida was coming back was if we helped them. Remember, this is the Kirby that scolded Gunner for his diving TD at Auburn and had Gunner take a knee in last year’s WLOCP because he was worried about some inexplicable combination of plays that might possibly give Auburn or Florida a chance to overcome a two score deficit with very little time on the clock.

    • I remember that ole holding onto plays thing. Yeah we didnt open it when weve needed to several times in our playoff games. Guess we used it all up vs FSU when it didnt matter.

  2. Is Sacovie really the only option at PR? Time for Kirby to spend some practice time with the “not so special teams”.

    Well said.

And since this is a fresh place to discuss this, THE LIST needs to be added.

Sure, someone could nitpick a few. Or say “why did the defense give up so many points.” Sometimes the Offense plays a role in that. But the point remains, Bobo has a massive sample size now of big games where the offense flopped, and choke losses when he took the foot off the gas.

He can pad stats like a monster and he can call good games here and there. He also seems to develop players well. But these other problems remain.

      • Thank you. Much appreciated. It has, unfortunately, been a list 13 years in the making.
He is who is is. A pretty good OC, but not elite.
We and our players deserve elite.

        • Unexplained periods of dormancy and frustration. As sure as the Braves won’t hit in the postseason, Bobo will lay eggs in big games often enough we have very little chance succeeding in a tournament format. He’s fortunate now that we can crap the bed a couple of times and still make it to the party. But stringing together strong offensive performances in the playoffs… highly unlikely. Of course, he could have just been saving plays for 20 years so Ole Miss would be blown away this weekend. 🤔

        • You “deserve” jack shit. But that is a nice bit of honesty. I wish the rest of the Bobo Derangement Syndrome people were so honest. The sense of entitlement is what is at the root of it. “I deserve more.” No you don’t.

And I laughed out loud when you qualified your statements about it being Bobo’s fault the defense gave up so many points. The offense affects the defense but the defense doesn’t affect the offense in your world. You people are too much.

          • We have a linebacker that’s third in rushing touchdowns.

            Yeah, bobo is amazing.

          • Bobo Derangement Syndrome people. That’s very telling of you that Bobo has a 20 year track record of only being great against terrible teams. Sounds like the Bobo Asslicker Syndrome people.

          • I say this because dismissing valid reasons why fans believe Bobo is not the answer by calling them deranged is a completely invalid response. Bobo has a very long track record of his offenses flopping at big moments & I have accepted that’s probably what we’ll see again this season. I hope more than you can imagine that I’m wrong but we’ll see. Minimum of three straight playoff games, I don’t see how he calls 3 aggressive games in a row.

    • Easy to sit and criticize. I am a Bobo guy. If CKS is happy, I’m happy! I just want them Dawgs to win! Buster got busted, the best ever! FTMF’s! Go Dawgs!!

        • Thank you. Sadly, it is a list that is 13 years in the making.
Every season, it is the same.
          Head Coach doesn’t matter.
          Year doesn’t matter.
Quality of our team doesn’t matter.

Bobo isn’t trash. He’s pretty decent. But he isn’t elite. Our team and our players are elite and deserve an elite OC.

    • Easy to sit and criticize. I am a Bobo guy. If CKS is happy, I’m happy! I just want them Dawgs to win! Buster got busted, the best ever! FTMF’s! Go Dawgs!!

    • If you’ve already conceded that the defense played a role in some of these examples, why even include those where we lost 45-42 or 38-35 and such?

      • Because he has a raging case of Bobo Derangement Syndrome. The offense doesnt score a hundred? Bobo sucks. The defense gives up too many points? Bobo sucks and it’s his fault. Special teams craps the bed? It’s Bobo’s fault. Offense affects the defense but the defense doesnt affect the offense.🤣🤣. These people are illogical. He listed the ‘07 Tennessee game in his manifesto up there Thst Hes so proud of. I remember that game well. The defense couldnt even slow that sucky Eric Ainge led offense down but in his mind Thst aint on Willie “Football AIDS” Martinez. That’s all on Mike Bobo.🤣🤣🤣

        • Yeah, zero points in the first half. Nah it ain’t bobos fault, Cole wasn’t there to run it in for the defense.

    • I’m in the camp that Bobo gets too much grief/criticism, but I do agree that the screen was over used and I didn’t like the Gunner runs late. On the other side after listening to the Jake Reuse and Rusty Mansell podcast, they pointed out after watching the all 22 film of the game that they were trying to go down field more than it seemed, but Gunner would have a pass rusher free in his face on several of those plays and had to get the ball out short before he wanted. They also noted the screen game was intentional due to pass protection concerns against Florida’s stunts and simulated pressures.

      • Yep. We did use the screen too much. One hundred percent. How much if that was Gunner and how much was Bobo is impossible to know but it was too much either way. I also agree it would be better if Gunner didn’t run so much. What makes me laugh is people talking about “designed runs”. They don’t have a clue how many of those were designed runs. They also don’t know how much of that was Gunner just deciding to run.

        • The I blame bobo meme has become very boring over the years. Yeah he’s had some head crazy scratching moments he’s also called some great games. I don’t believe Kirby would tolerate Bobo just because he’s BFF’s. It’s just not Kirby’s nature to except less than what he demands.

Totally agree not a single one of us knows if all the QB runs and screen passes are Bobo calls or Gunner changes, check downs or play break downs.

It’s not like Kirby would say publicly WTF with the screen passes or are you trying to get Gunner killed. I think Bobo is doing what’s asked.

  4. I think the grades are appropriate; however I think we are not considering how much Kirby dictated the game plan and offensive strategy. There is no doubt in my mind considering all Kirby’s talk about “The Dawgs beat the Dawgs” after the Auburn game and the “Dawgs didn’t beat the Dawgs” after this game. Knowing the control freak Kirby is, I think he told Bobo and his staff “you better not lose this MF ing game for us”. What else could Bobo do?

  5. QB runs when the game is all but decided are stupid. Short sighted mentality vs playing the long game. I’m beginning to think bobo does not call crossing routes because gunner can’t get the ball past the DL arms in the middle. One more, bobo used to call traditional RB screens when Knowshon and T Brown were around, I can’t remember the last one he’s called this year. Or last year.

    • Gunner is greatly limited as a passer. He has shown the ability to play great, but once he loses confidence or the coaches put him in a penalty box, it can get and stay ugly. Hopefully, we can find a way to win this year, but we need an elite qb and OC. The latter will never happen now, but maybe the former will. Looks like we are building a good stable if we can keep one or two.

  6. I’m not wading into the Bobo argument this week, but I will say our offense had best put at least 30 points on the board at Ole Miss or else we are all gonna be drunk and mean towards each other on here late Saturday night. Chambliss played well last week, and we can only hope to contain him.

    • “Drunk and mean to each other”

Haha. That made me chuckle. We are drunk and mean to each other even after destroying our most hated rival! We will be drunk and mean to each other Saturday night regardless of the outcome. And I’ll be here for it! Hopefully we will be arguing about how something we didn’t do right might cost us in a closer game in the future instead of arguing about how something we didn’t do right costs us the ole piss game.

    • Ole Piss has been a weird team this weird season. They get smoked by Florida and Texas, then look like future nat’l champs against every other team on their schedule. I’m betting you’re right, and we have to put at least 30 on the board to win. We’re more than capable of it, so let’s do it.

  7. QB play the past 4 years shows what a made up joke Fraud Monken was. Obviously, Lil Stet carried that Bum. It seemed like Gunnar had progresses but scairt Gunnar is back, Baby! Is he tough, of course he is, big deal all QBs in the SEC are tough. The fact we snapped direct to the RBs in goal line situations, proves he checked down to runs for whatever reason. Those direct snap plays were practiced and walked thru so what’s the deal? We didn’t want Gunnar running at the goal line yet he was calling his own number all the other times? Also, does he need glasses? Maybe he can’t see past 45 feet. I mean scairt Gunnar goes back to missing guys in the seam. Are they just out of the route tree and that’s why they’re running free? It was odd last year I saw Delp, his dayum roommate of all people, open down the seam in multiple games. A TE thet’s your roommate ain’t the safety valve of safety valves? Maybe Gunnar legitimately can’t see that far. Lil Stet and Bowers (the UGA Goat) ain’t walking through that door. BTW, saving plays and being vaniller? Give me a break EVERYBODY has tape of tape taping tape, there’s no secret plays out there in 2026.

    #GoDawgs

  8. Very enjoyable and accurate report card TUL.

This team is going as far as Gunner’s passing abilities take it. The Gunner we saw Saturday is not capable of winning championships. The Gunner in Tuscaloosa could win it all.

This team when healthy is capable of winning championships with just average QB play. I wish nothing but the very best for Gunner. He embodies everything I love about college football.

  9. Is it possible Gunner is playing through an injury? Do any of you out of work quarterback coaches believe that’s possible?

    • That’s my belief. There have been times the last couple games (and even games previous to that) where he looks in so much pain I wonder if he will be able to stand back up, but then stumbles back to the huddle. That ain’t nothing. And the continual pounding he takes adds up. I’d like to see him quit running on designed QB runs, regardless of whether it’s bobo or gunner checking to it. Gotta keep that kid protected as much as reasonably possible.

  10. Not sure what’s going on with Gunner and the offense. We’ve already shown there’s areas in which we’re competent so I’m not panicking…..yet. Going into Ole Miss game batted balls are on my mind because in the Sugar Bowl Ole Miss appeared to have D-linemen not rushing on passing downs and intentionally stepping into passing lanes to bat down passes and it was hugely effective. The only area I’m at Defcon 2 right now is special teams. Punt return and field goal have almost descended into, if not a shambles, an area of intense concern. Woodring clearly in some type of a slump. An area Dawg fans normally don’t think twice about urgently needs immediate improvement.

  11. If you want to criticize lack of utilization of the tight ends that makes sense. If you want to criticize specific play calls it makes sense. But just getting on here saying, “Bobo sucks! All those times the defense gave up forty points proves it! I am a realist!” then you just sound like a dumbass. Yall could not wait for the opportunity to come out of your little rat holes. It was killing you when the offense was scoring a point a minute.🤣

I read y’all’s comments and yiu dont even know what you’re looking at. There have been so many times during game day threads Thst the same three or four morons yell that “Bobo keeps running it up the middle!” after a play when somebody missed a block and the running back was hit in the mouth as he got the handoff or ran straight into a run blitz. I could take what you three or four know about football and put it in a Dixie cup and have room left over. It of course you three or four are the loudest. Also the ones who love to jump on people’s shit and act crazy during game day threads.🤣

  12. If the offense lights it up in Oxford yall will bitch out and just go back into hiding. It happens every time. If you can’t scream about Mike Bobo you don’t even post. One of you clowns said something earlier about the team deserving better. The team deserves better than jackasses like you for fans.

    • Breaking….Football fanatics (fans for short) get upset at coaches and players from their favorite team. Also water gets you wet and the sun rises in the East. News at 11:00.

        • You wank about the Bobo haters more than they wank on here about Bobo. You just want to bitch and moan. Don’t look now, but some kids are on your lawn.

          • He may be a little OCD about the subject, but that doesn’t mean he’s wrong.

The Bobo haters don’t know much about football.

          • Oh we having a rap battle?

            Look at these fake

            Though guys who

            Cry and rock

            Butterflies

            Little bitches trip

            And scream about falling skies

            Every time the offense

            Dont go for the

            Grand prize these

            Hos go onnthe rag

            And spew from blood from

            Their mangines.

  13. “One of my worst preseason fears reared its ugly head when our all-world Tight End group caught all of 3 passes for 28 yards. I don’t really care who catches passes in the offense, but I find it very odd that we have a guy like Elyiss Williams, a certified freak of nature, and he finishes the game without even one catch (did he even get targeted?).

Definitely one of those games where I thought to myself, are we that scared to throw the ball downfield?”

Dead on. I never played, either, and my football knowledge would fit easily into a Dixie cup. That said, I know that we have four TEs who are matchup problems, and only Reddell and Luckie got targeted vs. the Jorts. 0 targets for Elyiss and Barbour. I may be–ok, I definitely am–a football dummy, but I just don’t understand why those guys, as a group, aren’t catching three or four intermediate-length passes a game, particularly on third-and-manageable. Or, hell, let ’em go long, as Reddell did on an incomplete pass that would probably have been a TD. These dudes have elite physical traits. Let’s unleash ’em on Ole Piss and the rest of our opponents. Go Dawgs.
