What a Long, Strange Trip It’s Been

This is something to behold.

Remove the Big XII schools from this, and it’s not a shock that we had the best record in the SEC in the 1980s. It feels like we should’ve been lower in the 90s, but the upward trajectory starting the 2010s is refreshing, finish with 100 wins for the decade and, of course, now owning the best records in the 20’s.

What’s equally refreshing to see is where Florida and Auburn are in the 2020s, exactly where they deserve to be.

  1. vandy wins these charts for maintaining expectations. kirby will never forget your covid yesr bullshit. anchor down mofos.

  2. I was a student on campus for the 1972 through 1978 football seasons. The 1970s didn’t seem that successful looking ng back on them in retrospect. My long held belief was that we were a decent but not top tier SEC program. This chart makes me feel better about the 1970s. Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas were not our peers that decade. I didn’t realize that UGA was the second best football program playing in the SEC that decade.
Makes me feel better about my student days!
(Also points out how dominant Bear Bryant’s program was. I have never conceded that Saban is their greatest of all time; Bryant deserves consideration. )

  3. A couple of observations. It muddies the water putting out graphics including teams that weren’t in the league at the time; Dawgs had their share of mediocre football in the 70’s and 90’s but the records especially in the 90’s were better than expected. That 2020’s number for UGA is epic!

  4. Dawgs were one game behind Florida for the 2000’s and better since then. Richt really turned us around and Kirby has taken us to another level. The past 25 years have been glorious! Best enjoy it while we can!

  5. The 70s through 90s numbers remind me how much more common rebuilding was than reloading back then. We’d have really good, senior-heavy teams about three rimes a decade, competitive but not great teams for a two or three more seasons, and then some mediocre teams in the remainder. There’d be grumbling during the down seasons but ultimately a lot more patience with being an also-ran than there’d ever be now.
