The weekend that was at Message Board Geniuses – week 10 edition

“Next time, please don’t tell Kirby we’re a trap game”

With the number of firings at this point in the regular season, the message boards were a little calmer than normal, but we did see some meltdowns. I’m here to share the ones I think are genius worthy.

Let’s start out in Columbia West as Missouri is rapidly heading to meaningless bowl game status.

Missouri gets boat-raced by Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon. It’s hard to blame the loss on anything but really bad injury luck as Matt Zollars gets his first start and looks like a true freshman. Drinkwitz made a Kirby Smart Sugar Bowl type of error late in the 2nd quarter. Down 7-0, 3rd and 10 on the Mizz 42 with less than a minute to go in the half, Missouri can go to the half down 7 and getting the ball to start the 3rd. Zollars fumbles on a 14 yard sack, and A&M runs it back to the 2. The game was virtually over at that point.

Let’s move on to Nashville to check in on the coaching search in Greater Opelika.

I’m not guessing a certain coach in Athens and one in Tuscaloosa are shaking in their boots of Tulane’s coach finding his way to the Alabama Cow College. The reason I posted this is the Sun Belt Billy effect on SEC fan bases. No one at the “upper tier” of the league wants to be the next hiring a Group of 5 coach into the rough and tumble environment on the SEC.

On the game, Auburn loses again. This time their defense gives up 500 plus yards, and they blow a 4th quarter lead. Cam Coleman goes off in his potential audition for the transfer portal.

Let’s move on to check in on the latest on the Handbags.

North central jort-wearing Handbags making comments about others’ questionable sexual behavior with close relatives is priceless. Georgia beats Florida twice as the Gators throw in the towel on the season. DJ Lagway was finally benched after throwing 3 more interceptions. The Gators average less than 3 yards per play and give up 400 yards.

At this point, Gator fans are going to be singing, “There’s no place like home for the holidays” unless they win their last 3 games. Let’s move on to the Upstate to check in on the Tribe.

Florida State takes it on the chin at Clemson 24-10. The Florida-FSU game is likely to be as entertaining as Clemson-South Carolina at this point. I assume Florida State doesn’t want and/or can’t afford to join the coaching carousel.

How did this Florida State team beat Alabama?

How did the same Clemson team that gave up 46 to Duke absolutely stymie the FSU offense?

Let’s end this week’s trip in Starkville.

I don’t like putting Georgia here. The beginning of the game was bad on defense, and I’m glad it wasn’t a harbinger for the remainder of the game. The offense was clicking from the start even with the unfortunate turnover on the goal line on the 2nd possession. A segment of our fan base isn’t going to be happy unless we put a TCU or FSU whipping on every one of our opponents.

To Queefus, Kirby is never going to fire an assistant midseason without a darn good reason (likely off the field). Just stop.

What did you see this weekend? Let us know in the comments.

I've been a Dawg my entire life. UGA was always my dream school where I received 2 Terry College degrees and met my DGD wife. I've been a season ticket holder for over 30 years and love the in-stadium experience over anything from Section HD. My first game in Sanford Stadium was the 1981 Auburn game where we clinched the SEC championship. The best game I've attended in person was the Midnight Miss against Ohio State (nite, nite!). The best home games I've attended were the 1984 Clemson game (the Butler did it) and the 2013 LSU game (that 4th down is still the loudest single moment I've experienced between the hedges). The game I love to win is against the Handbags (FTMF), and the game I hate to lose is the NATS (Tuck Fech).

  1. I’ll tell you what I didn’t see. Any sign of a team that would just straight up destroy us. And we’re getting better every week.

    • anOSU will be a tough out. Indiana doesn’t scare me in the least. Texas A&M has a good front 7. Bama is Bama.

      Focus on the Shorthorns. 🙂

      • Indiana is a good team talent-wise, and they have belief. That was a helluva a winning drive at Pedo State. Plus, going into Oregon and winning by 10 isn’t easy.

I think the teams ranked ahead of us would probably be favored on a neutral field. That said, it wouldn’t surprise me to see our Dawgs beat anyone, or get boat-raced by a top team. That’s what happens with a young team.

      • Out of the OSU, Indiana, aTm, and Bama, aTm scares me the least. They are 130th in the country in opponent’s yards per carry (taking out sacks). The front 7 has been very good in pass rush, but they have a hard time stopping the run. I have a hard time believing aTm can make a run to win a natty if they struggle that much against the run. As bad as the Mizzou game was, aTm still gave up over 200 yards on the ground. That game might be totally different if they played a team with a fully functional offense.

Indiana scares me only because their offense can be so incredibly explosive. Indiana gives up a lot of explosive plays on defense (15+ yards pass / 10+ yards rushing). Even with the explosives, IU’s defense is fourth in defensive SP+. I don’t think that Georgia can play its usual game of playing stout defense for only half the game and overcome a big deficit with IU (or, in reality, any team in the top 10).

OSU has looked like the best and most complete team this season and Patricia’s defense is really impressive with that complex NFL scheme that basically no one in the country runs (other than Elko). That said, OSU hasn’t beaten a ranked team other than a woefully preseason over-hyped Texas team in week one and won’t face another until the Michigan game on November 29th (assuming Michigan wins at Northwestern and Maryland). OSU’s rushing attack hasn’t been elite by any stretch against some pretty putrid opposition. Whether or not they can be rendered one-dimensional by Michigan or Indiana in the B1GCG remains to be seen. It is hard to really get a good feeling about OSU, and IU for that matter, because the strength of the B1G after the top three or four teams is pretty weak when comparing it to the depth of the SEC.

As you said, Bama is Bama and I’ll never not feel like something bad is going to happen when Georgia plays Bama.

  2. Give it up. Schumann & Kirby did not forget how to coach defense.
Team is young & getting better each week.
    FSU in UNCONQUERED

    • Kirby did what he does best with fsU. He broke them. 63-3 exposed their lack of culture and pride. The crimeanoles have been irrelevant for the better part of a decade but after the beat down by UGA they may be unconquered but they sure as hell have a whole lot of quit in them. fsU lays down faster than a hooker at midnight. F ’em.

    • The “Oh my God why aren’t we blasting teams in the manner we did in 2021-2022” ignore the fact that guys who aren’t starters at Georgia can do something they could not do in 2020 or 2021; transfer to an SEC team at which the can start and get paid a million. That million as a starter at, say, Missouri, would be more than we would pay them to be a rotational player. Example. Damon WIlson at Missouri. If the rules in 2018 through 2021 were the same as now anyone think Channing Tindall would have stayed as a backup?
Firing Schumann or Bobo would not change the player transfer and NIL rules.

  3. “A segment of our fan base isn’t going to be happy unless we put a TCU or FSU whipping on every one of our opponents.”

That same segment, or maybe a slightly different one, hasn’t realized yet that this team starts off slow. It’s one thing to gripe when we’re in a tight game with an overmatched opponent late in the game. But by this point in the season, if you’re going to melt down in the 1st quarter instead of sitting back and waiting for the Dawgs to finally get up to speed, you’re just looking for a reason to be miserable.

    • Well said. I think that Georgia in 2025 isn’t talented, dominant or mature enough on defense yet to overcome a well-scripted first ___ number of plays by a good offensive coordinator. Whether it is one series (like Mississippi State) or several series of plays (like Tennessee), I think that you have to sit back and wait until the opponent has run out of things that our defensive staff hasn’t seen yet.

  4. Diego Pavia.
Yeah, he’s a hotdog but he’s one heck of a competitor. You knew AU didn’t stand a chance in overtime.
BTW..the refs missed the most blatant holding call in the history of football on one AU touchdown. Clark Lea was rightly pissed off! (and let the refs know it) but of course the war-pigeon message boards won’t be whining about how bad SEC officiating is this week…because this time it benefited them, only to have their hopes smashed by Pavia in the ensuing OT. LMAO!
    Vandy is a special story.
I hope they somehow manage to get to the CFP and knock off one of the over-rated B1g teams.
If strength of schedule is HONESTLY baked into the CFP selections Vandy should be in or very close.

    • That wasn’t a blatant hold. That was at best a tackle and at worst assault. There is no camera angle I’ve seen of that play that in any way makes it look like a good, clean block.

  5. I feel like the “UGA fans” on MBG are like the slaves who would follow the triumphant Roman generals in victory parades and whisper “Memento mori” in their ears to remind them they were mere mortals. What’s Latin for “we have our own idiots too”?

    Habemus nostros stultos.

  6. Latin for “we have our own idiots too”? could be “Don’t be such a Barner”

  7. That game was so out of context for the team this season, I don’t know what to think going forward, but that was sure fun to watch. I hope we’re getting better at putting pressure on the QB and we continue to play more aggressively on D (and O for that matter). That’s been missing most of the season outside of parts of some games. The offense looked great in contrast to last week, especially the O-line. Frazier ran like a man possessed and that was great to see. Who will show up Saturday night, no telling. Kirby once again has us right in the CFP mix, which is really all I hope for each year. Need to stay healthy, win Saturday, and go to the playoffs with a full squad this year instead of the MASH unit that played Notre Dame. HBTFD’S!!!

  8. The look on Lebby’s face…was one of he honestly believed they would take us deep into the 4th and win…I guess you can call that disbelief.

  9. Random quibble from your post, but Mizzou trying for a FG to end the half from their own 42 (meaning they only needed 25 yards) with over a minute to play isn’t the same as Kirby doing that from our own 15 yard line in the Sugar Bowl with 35 seconds left. Still can’t believe that one.
