Round the hole, down the hole – Alabama preview & game day thread

Tonight the Dawgs and Tide get together in a likely rain-soaked, wind-blown Bryant-Denny Stadium with the inside track to Atlanta and the CFP on the line. As usual, the rosters of both teams are littered with future NFL prospects. The coaches are 2 of the game’s current best in Kirby Smart and Kalen DeBoer. It has been a long time since the Dawgs have beaten Alabama in a regular season. Here’s to hoping that streak comes crashing down about 11 pm. Let’s get to the preview.

When Georgia has the ball

The Georgia offense needs to turn this into a line of scrimmage kind of game as they did back in December in the Atlanta rematch. Keep Gunner Stockton upright in the pocket with potential running lanes and allow the Georgia running backs to find holes. While the Alabama defense has been stout against the run, South Carolina did gash the Alabama front 7. This game goes as far as the Georgia offensive line allows it to go. With Chauncey Bowens out for tonight, Nate Frazier needs to have one of his biggest games as a Bulldog. It’s also a time for the Georgia tight ends to assert themselves as the deepest position group on the field regardless of sideline.

When Alabama has the ball

The Tide has found their quarterback in Keelon Russell, who is now the betting favorite to win the Most Overrated Award in Sports. He has been difficult to control, but the Tide offense is going to face the best defense by far they have seen this season. The Tide’s offensive line had trouble with the Georgia front 7 in the SEC championship game. Once again, if the Georgia defensive front can assert itself, the Dawgs should see some success. If not, the Tide has the opportunity to turn this game into a track meet where it could be difficult for the Georgia offense to keep up.

What will happen

Is the emergence of Russell by itself enough for the point spread to move from Georgia by a field goal to Bama -1.5? As this game draws closer, my optimism goes up. If the weather conditions are as bad as they appear to be at this point, I do believe that tends to be an advantage to the team that is more physical. Even in last year’s loss in Athens, the Dawgs were the more physical team. I do think Kirby has been game planning for this one pretty much the whole season to this point (other than the week of the OU game). This game comes down to turnovers and kicking game. I think that makes experience at quarterback invaluable. Dawgs get one hand on the Alabama state championship trophy tonight.

Final score: Georgia 27, Alabama 24

This also serves as the Georgia game day thread, so keep it civil.

Hurricane? Isn’t that an ACC Team?

Amazing…folks aren’t worried about financial loss, tornadoes, or economic impact. No, it’s whether or not we’ll get to watch the other games at the tailgate or if our team is going to get to play:

All eyes are on Tuscaloosa this Saturday, where College GameDay takes place as Georgia faces Alabama. But Isaias could put a damper on the big SEC showdown.

(MORE: Hurricane Isaias Live Updates)

Heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms are possible as Tuscaloosa sits in the storm path.I’m

Isaias will also affect tailgates across the Southeast, and its rain spreads from the Southeast to the Northeast on Sunday, impacting NFL games.

That’s from the Weather Channel. Nice to see where our priorities are appropriately placed. Meanwhile, in Tuscaloosa, there’s a little bit of “do as I say, not as I do” going on, based on this Twix post.

If anyone questioned whether college football is still important, Hurricane IsayIsayIsay is proof positive the college football is still king in a lot of people’s hearts and wallets.

At least Waffle House more sense.

Go Dawgs!

Penalties are Subjective, I Guess

Interesting, given yesterday’s Fodder post, but if facemasks, holdings, balls hitting the ground, and referees not being whiny little bitches, where could we have been?

A referee here is holding a penalty flag, commonly thrown whenever the fuck they want to to disrupt and influence a game, not when it actually applies to infractions to the rules.

I appreciate the referee in the first clip just being a man and trucking the idiot staring at the Jumbotron instead of absorbing the experience on the field. If you wanted to watch TV, stay the hell at home. If I had to pay good money for being at a game, being on the sideline would be a privilege, or even if I was there with the team.

Anyway, just another footnote in the rich history of us getting screwed by penalties.

Friday Fodder for Filibustering: If If’s and But’s Were Tua and Hurts

Well, there’s actual footage out there of Saban’s halftime decision to give us years more of hurt and anguish in the 2017 National Championship game.

X video from the ESPN film “Saban”, which is a documentary about Saban’s career as the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Lest we forget:

This is an Image of Sony Michel and Nick Chubb after losing to Alabama the national championship game in 2017.

If we ever needed more reason to go in to Alabama and destroy a team, it should be this. And if we switched in Puglisi to do it, even better.

Gotta say I respect the man, but I still wonder what would’ve been had Alabama not had two future NFL starting quarterbacks on their team. I remember worrying at halftime that they would switch to the more mobile quarterback, who we also were withing a shoestring of bringing down on a sack prior to the game-winning throw.

Discuss your biggest what-ifs in Georgia lore, or what you think would’ve happened if Alabama didn’t have a QB2 in the game.

Mustn’t See TV

The ratings are in after five weeks of college football, and it’s safe to say this wouldn’t be a good year for the Montana Project.

First off, tell my why we should take the BigXII seriously. Nearly three-quarters of the SEC has more viewers that the BigXII’s top pull, which is Coach Amazon Prime and Colorado, and I dare say that was boosted by their game with Georgia Tech and possibly Northwestern. The Atlanta and Chicago viewer markets are pretty big, and people also watch Colorado with the same interest as they would watching an actual train wreck or infrared videos of war footage from military helicopters.

Also of interest is the relative lack of appetite for Indiana, which should startle the hell out of the television money machine, being that they, and NIL, propped up the Hoosiers to a National Championship to only yield yawns and indifference from their viewership. The Indiana-Northwestern Friday night game was great watching, but it didn’t help Indiana that much, and, let’s face it, they aren’t playing anyone for another couple of weeks, anyway.

Ohio State is, I’m sure, claiming another trophy, but let’s be fair, people are watching for the same reason they watched Alabama for so many years…they are praying for the Suckeyes to lose, and two games – versus Texas and Iowa – were prime watching for that very thing.

I’m sure Georgia’s viewership will rise after this weekend and moving forward. I’m just hoping that 9 million eyes will be watching Georgia officially break the Alabama curse, and not another iteration of the 2024 debacle featuring the first 17 year old to yadda yadda yadda.

If You’re Going to Bryant-Denny, Bring a Book and a Lot of Extra Clothes

Between Hurricane Isayisayisay and the visit from the President, it promises to be a cluster of epic proportions on Saturday in Tuscaloosa. A few important details, in case any of our Refugees are headed there.

Gates will open at 4 pm, and they’re encouraging people to be in line no later than 5 pm. As far as I can tell, no, there are no concessions discounts if you arrive early. Just be prepared to be poor and wet. Hopefully, by the end, you’ll be poor, wet, and happy.

But wait…there’s more! This is from UAGameday, which provides tips for The University of Alabama gameday experiences for potential participants at games.

College Gameday will be indoors, which might actually be the best place to be pregame, even if you have to be subjected to a shirtless Pat McAfee. It’s Alabama, so shirtless shouldn’t be a novel sight for the game. Or during. Or after.

Cough.

In short, the game isn’t being moved, postponed, or delayed, as of now. Whatever Hurricane Iamalavea does to Tuscaloosa has yet to be determined, but Alabama’s grounds crew has been on the mother and they are assuring everyone that the stadium might get blown away, but the field will be in good order.

The Twix post includes pictures of the actual construction as well as some context that Prinsco, Inc., the same group that provides the drainage systems for Augusta National, improved Saban Field in 2023 to where Alabama wouldn’t have to apologize to visiting teams for field conditions after a rainstorm.

The field should be in good shape, and hopefully the storms will not provide too much surrounding damage to prevent our players from getting a healthy night’s sleep and time to prepare for the game. It’d be a good day to have a box of chicken and a few cold ones in your car rather than dragging out the canopy and HDTV. They might blow away, anyway.

The Importance of Being Earnest

I have to admit that I questioned Earnest Greene a pretty good bit over the past couple of seasons. At many times he seemed lost, tired, or just plain bad. But, it’s another year, another season, and, at least with the stats and grades, he’s been doing a good job at Left Tackle.

This is Earnest Greene (Number 71), pictured celebrating with Zachariah Branch after Georgia’s win against Tennessee. Picture is from 2025, since Georgia hasn’t played Tennessee this year, and since Branch is now a receiver with the NFL Franchise the Atlanta Falcons. This is Neyland Stadium, as evidenced by the orange and white checkerboards and the white jerseys/red helmet combination that is traditionally won when the Dawgs are on the road.

On the season, Greene has allowed two quarterback pressures and zero sacks. To get to the more granular level, PFF has him graded at 82.9, which is 7th in the nation for Tackles, and while his pass blocking grade of 81.9 is 32nd in the nation, his run blocking rating of 81.4 is good for 8th in the nation.

Although it’s a short body of work and, admittedly, against not the greatest of defenses, Greene is outperforming Monroe Freeling, last year’s Left Tackle, who scored a 71.4 and was 79th in the nation overall (10th in pass blocking, but 248th in Run Blocking).

Hopefully, Greene will continue to be a strength for Gunner’s blind side and for road grading guys for the run game with a rapidly depleting running back room, and this grade will still hold true after this weekend’s tilt with Alabama.

We’ll Leave a Light On For Ya

Holy shit.

I mean, they’re 55 a night around the metro, not that I’d know or anything. The Price is Right, I guess.

Short Yardage Situation

Ruh roh, Shaggy. Looks like the short yardage game is down a man come Saturday.

Bowens being out hurts. With Frazier being back in we can anticipate more aggressive running, but Bowens has been solid in the short run game this season.

Enter Bo Walker. Time to step in, and step up, young man.

Also on the Questionable List: Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Rock You Like a Hurricane

For all the prognostication about what the offenses would look like on Saturday in Tuscaloosa, worry not, there’s a real chance the game could be postponed due to…a hurricane.

It wouldn’t be the first time, and you don’t have to look too far back to find out the last time a game was postponed due to weather…then played the next day.

Oddly, it was scheduled for October 8th, 2016, but played on October 9th, which was a Sunday. Georgia prevailed 28-14 behind a record-setting performance by Jacob Eason, who amassed 29 yards passing with one interception on the day. I’m not lying.

So what’re the possibilities? Who knows, but I have a few options.

  1. Option 1 – Play on Sunday, October 11th, 11 pm (CT)

This is mainly not to compete with the NFL, who oddly kicks off their Sunday slate at 9:30 am with the Eagles vs. Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England. Baltimore is playing at Atlanta at 8:20 pm, so a midnight kickoff would avoid competing with NFL air time and yield the greatest “eff you” to the Pac-12 After Dark crowd by playing a game that technically starts on Monday morning and ends around the time you’re getting up for work. Screw work.

2. Option 2 – Saturday, October 10th, 7:30 pm – Mercedes Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia or Caesar’s Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana

Why not. It’s either the Sugar Bowl or the Peach Bowl, either one is a great venue. For the purposes of the adjustment, I feel MBS is the better option, and Arthur Blank can be a real humanitarian by offering discount concessions and dollar beers. If Trump still shows up, we can really create Armageddon in downtown Atlanta traffic but allowing fans into MBS at 9 am with Blank’s grace would make for one hell of an evening game, would it not?

To further add mystique, call it an SECCG Play-In Game, and start the expanded playoff model early. After all, Alabama is back and a CFP lock, right? Let’s play it out on the field.

Option 3 – Saturday, October 10th, 7:30 pm – Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn, AL

Hey, Auburn isn’t in the cone model, so technically this could be a split between Georgia and Alabama fans. To make matters more enjoyable, either side could have the added pleasure of knowing that it’s the first time locals have seen two ranked teams playing each other in Jordan-Hare in God knows how long.

So what would you like to see happen? Or should we just make it epic and play through the Hurricane like Lieutenant Dan making peace with God in Forrest Gump?

Discuss.
