Round the hole, down the hole – Alabama preview & game day thread

Tonight the Dawgs and Tide get together in a likely rain-soaked, wind-blown Bryant-Denny Stadium with the inside track to Atlanta and the CFP on the line. As usual, the rosters of both teams are littered with future NFL prospects. The coaches are 2 of the game’s current best in Kirby Smart and Kalen DeBoer. It has been a long time since the Dawgs have beaten Alabama in a regular season. Here’s to hoping that streak comes crashing down about 11 pm. Let’s get to the preview.

When Georgia has the ball

The Georgia offense needs to turn this into a line of scrimmage kind of game as they did back in December in the Atlanta rematch. Keep Gunner Stockton upright in the pocket with potential running lanes and allow the Georgia running backs to find holes. While the Alabama defense has been stout against the run, South Carolina did gash the Alabama front 7. This game goes as far as the Georgia offensive line allows it to go. With Chauncey Bowens out for tonight, Nate Frazier needs to have one of his biggest games as a Bulldog. It’s also a time for the Georgia tight ends to assert themselves as the deepest position group on the field regardless of sideline.

When Alabama has the ball

The Tide has found their quarterback in Keelon Russell, who is now the betting favorite to win the Most Overrated Award in Sports. He has been difficult to control, but the Tide offense is going to face the best defense by far they have seen this season. The Tide’s offensive line had trouble with the Georgia front 7 in the SEC championship game. Once again, if the Georgia defensive front can assert itself, the Dawgs should see some success. If not, the Tide has the opportunity to turn this game into a track meet where it could be difficult for the Georgia offense to keep up.

What will happen

Is the emergence of Russell by itself enough for the point spread to move from Georgia by a field goal to Bama -1.5? As this game draws closer, my optimism goes up. If the weather conditions are as bad as they appear to be at this point, I do believe that tends to be an advantage to the team that is more physical. Even in last year’s loss in Athens, the Dawgs were the more physical team. I do think Kirby has been game planning for this one pretty much the whole season to this point (other than the week of the OU game). This game comes down to turnovers and kicking game. I think that makes experience at quarterback invaluable. Dawgs get one hand on the Alabama state championship trophy tonight.

Final score: Georgia 27, Alabama 24

This also serves as the Georgia game day thread, so keep it civil.

I've been a Dawg my entire life. UGA was always my dream school where I received 2 Terry College degrees and met my DGD wife. I've been a season ticket holder for over 30 years and love the in-stadium experience over anything from Section HD. My first game in Sanford Stadium was the 1981 Auburn game where we clinched the SEC championship. The best game I've attended in person was the Midnight Miss against Ohio State (nite, nite!). The best home games I've attended were the 1984 Clemson game (the Butler did it) and the 2013 LSU game (that 4th down is still the loudest single moment I've experienced between the hedges). The game I love to win is against the Handbags (FTMF), and the game I hate to lose is the NATS (Tuck Fech).

  1. I’m gonna wait until McAfee tells me what to think, smh.

My score prediction is the same as yours. So far this season I have concluded that our team is the most well rounded it has been in 2 years. That goes for special teams as well. Solid team, if we get beat, then so be it.

  2. Somebody is going to blink, then lose. Coin flip game.

I am wondering why Bowens got the ball on a meaningless inside run right before half against Vanderbilt. Kinda like running a qb sweep up by 25 in the 3rd quarter and he gets a full blast head shot.

    • Or why we were running two starting running backs late in the Arkansas blowout. Also not sure why we dumped so much money into Frazier, who was quietly benched last year for fumblitis. Beginning to have the feeling Nate is our Ronald Acuna. I wanna see him step up in a major way today.

        • Everyone is entitled to an opinion. The quality of that opinion is also subject to a contrary opinion. Its always interesting to me that the most willing bitches about the coachin’ are also quick to bitch about any bitching regarding their own coachin’ judgements, but thats why they call them bitches, amirite? Its a cycle of bitch 24/7/365.

Bitches may forth in a made up world of “I can bitch about Kirby but no one can bitch about my bitching!” world-view!

After all, I do think it qualifies as an ethos.

  3. Saw where Chris Doering picked Georgia 42-41. He doesn’t see either defense stopping either offense. Hope we win obviously but my nervous system doesn’t like those kind of games.

  4. Yall not gonna like it. But until circumstances dictate otherwise, BAMA BY A MILLION!!!! Dawgs are not beating Bama in Tuscaloosa. Tide 34 Dawgs 27

Too much emotion, too much Saban, too much history & too much self doubt for Dawgs to overcome.

    I hope Im wrong!!!!!

  5. If it were an Episode of Dancing with the Stars, we’d be outmanned. They can dance like nobody’s business.
Fortunately, this is a football game. We know what our guys are about: running through faces and fucking shit up.

Have bammer improved their physicality to the point of closing the gap sufficient to last for 60 minutes?

I watched Louisville do to FSU basically the same thing that bama did.

I think they got us confused with some whole other body. We’re faster, bigger, meaner, deeper, more disciplined, better coached, better prepared and more focused.

Everything we’ve done this season has pointed to tonight. We’re gonna unleash hell. Miss Kaylyn and his fingernail polished sweet boys are gonna fold just like in Atlanta.

Remember the Blackout? Tonight the worm turns…
    DAWGS by a bunch!!

      • The problem that night was waiting too long to wake up.

I think Kirby has washed out a lot of the NIL “contented” guys and we’re back to the hungry roster he wants.

  6. I’ll buy what Derek is selling there!

Georgia has better talent and better coaches.

Bama is the flavor of the week and will have some home field advantage.

As the game wears on, that will diminish..but the better talent wont’.

Dawgs by two scores..10 or 14 points.

    (

  7. ee, you do great work, but l am not buying DeBoer as being on the same level as CKS! Long way to go to be up there in rare air. They could win, but that doesn’t mean he is a world beater. No SEC , no Natty. Ithink he is the Bammers version of Brian Harsin! Anyway FTMF’s!! Go Dawgs!!

    • I didn’t say he is in the same air as Kirby. He is one of the best coaches in the sport. There’s a reason Alabama signed him to an extension last year when he could have easily gone to one of the Big 10 jobs.

  8. I have no idea what will happen because it’s bama. A blowout or squeaker win by either team will not surprise me. Just hoping we execute and don’t kill ourselves.

  9. I believe our defense is better than the last time we played a really good team with a running quarterback. We struggled the last few years with containing running QBs but we should have the edge again (literally) and that could be the difference. If Russell makes perfect throws on the run all night, then it will just be another one of those what can you do about that games, but if we get after him and our DBs show up and show out, we should get the W. Go you hairy fuckin’ Dawgs!!

  10. Even after we won the NC in 21, the Bama curse still seemed to live. Two regular season losses, one in their place in 24 and another at ours in 25 made me wonder if we would ever get out from under Bama’s shadow. Something always seemed to go wrong when we lined up against them. Then something magnificent happened; the 2025 SEC Championship Game. The 2021 NC in Indy had been a close game, and until Kelee did his magic late, Bama was a TD and 2 pt conversion from tying that game. We won, but we were still biting nails on Bama’s last drive. The 2025 SECCG changed all that for me. I watched the Dawgs put some total domination on Bama, made their first round draft pick QB QUIT, held them to 11 yards rushing, and never looked challenged in that game. Until Bama does something, anything, to erase that memory, I’m rolling with the Dawgs on this one.

  11. If we can’t stop a freshman backfield and win with an expert backfield we need to FIRE KIRBY!11!!1!

    Dawgs roll…27-13.

    • I like the optimism, but I hope you are being sacrasmic with the Fire Kirb comment. He’d have to do a lot worse than lose to bammer. And let’s not act like they dont have a lot in their favor right now. Especially with several key players out for UGA.

  12. My hope is that the Dawgs come in angry, hungry and with a huge chip on their shoulder! Defense, offense and special teams

  13. No Chauncey sucks. I don’t really know enough about Bo Walker to know how much help he will be. If Frazier can be really effective we might be ok. Alabama can always count on us having some key person hurt. I am so sick of Alabama.

    • Can Frazier keep the ball safe AND wear a vest? That worries me. I’m guessing, Gunner, the TE’s, screens, and maybe some wrs (reverses, shuttle passes, etc…) will take the pressure off of Nate in the running game a bit.

We may be pass happier early than is typical as well.

The necessity of creativity may actually help us. Adversity is always going play a role in big games. Like Herschel though, you pop that sucker in, set your jaw and go get some. Just gotta block stuff out, overcome and handle the necessary business.

  14. Alabama has a ton of talent but do they really have the discipline and grit to go toe-to-toe with the Dawgs? I don’t think so. When it comes to show-boating, penalties and turning the ball over—Bama’s got us outclassed. Dawgs win, 28-17.

  15. Bama has made a great living so far off of turnovers especially pick sixes. Play clean and win on third down and I really like our chances. If not I’ve seen that movie the ending sucks.

Rip their hearts out dawgs sic’em.

  16. Swamp looking like Jax!! Alan Jackson has a song for Sumrall, “Here in the Real World”!Dorothy also said “ you’re not in Kansas anymore!!” Welcome to the SEC!! Go Dawgs!

  17. I had UGA winning this game until I found out Bowens was out. That is worrisome to say the least. I still think they can win, but I think him being out swings it in favor of bammer given the wind and moisture that is certain to play a factor. I can’t be a homer here, I think Nick Satan’s former team squeaks one out. Call it bammer 21, UGA 17.

  18. dispatch from deep within the heart of the beast…

    Skybox 787

    Student section is full…

    82:38 until KO

I don’t know how many of bammers in this box it would take to whip my ass, but I got a good idea of how many they gonna use…

  19. A steady misty drizzle clouds the stadium lights.

The wind is whipping and swirling.

    stadium us 60% full
    58:15 to ko

  20. You got this Derek! You are a Damn Ga Dawg!! Whip their ass you n the box and them Dawgs will take care of business on the field!!! You know what us refugees say, FTMF’s in the a—, and bring on the barbed wire!! Go Dawgs!!

  21. Every beginning of the season Texas is Back! Every Spring the toilets explode. Every October the horns lose.

    • Dawgs were holding…but Bama held and tackled Georgia defenders on their drive.

      And these announcers are assholes.

One of them orgasmed when he thought we might have lost that fumble.

So far, Dawgs look like the better team

  22. Modelo’s CFB commercials are still laughably bad.

Luckie can’t get caught holding there. So blatant.

I’m guessing that’s the last time Peal carries the ball.

Can we get off the field on 3rd down?

  23. End of 1stQ: UGA 3 Bama O Refs 1. “…and I looked down upon the field and a bunch of convicts were running around”.

  24. Those calls were so UnBobo like & I mean that in the best way! Throw to the TE’s, attack the middle of the field! Throw in dome toss sweeps to Peanut & then we’re where this talent belongs. Go Dawgs!
