Guns for Hire

Ever been curious how much one of those receivers or offensive linemen will cost a program out of the portal? Well, the Athletic has news for you!

Does this explain Kirby’s Portal strategy…being a spend thrift? And if we paid Modozie that much money to ride the line, I can’t blame Kirby for wanting to dance with the dates that brought ya.

Or, it’s basic supply and demand. A lot more receivers and DBs floating around out there looking for a new home, so value shop while you can, I suppose.

Seasoned Veterans

Between COVID year exceptions, new transfer rules, redshirting waivers, etc., it’s getting more and more common to see 24 and 25 years olds playing college football. One Twixer seems to believe that the formula to Indiana’s success is their veteran group of starters:

By contrast, Georgia fielded one of the youngest teams in the CFP and also had the fewest number of transfers starting for them by comparison. With the basketball side of the NCAA beginning to let former pros start playing college hoops again, it makes me wonder if Matthew Stafford wants to come back for a final year of eligibility.

At this rate, it’s going to be harder and harder for these guys to draw the NFL insurance benefits at year ten in the league if they’re coming in at age 25.
