Week 3 Mumme Poll – Suck of the Irish

I’m becoming convinced that the only poll that ever matters is our own Mumme Poll. Danny Kanell went on a tirade last week and called out several pollsters, including one from the AP that justified ranking Florida ahead of USF on their poll. That looks more hilariously poor after DJ’s showering of interceptions to the Tigers.

What I’m not getting is all the love for USC, and why people continue to rank Notre Dame. I get it…two losses to two good teams. Sure. But the only game they have left on their schedule that’s worth a damn is…USC. Looks like they’re justifying any way they can to sneak the Irish back into the CFP. What’s worse, the computer-based polling doesn’t look much better right now.

Imagine what it must feel like to be a Tech fan and see the FPI. Anyway, on to this week’s Mumme Poll.

Tech fans would love our poll, no? Dropping out of the Mumme Poll this week – the state of South Carolina and Notre Dame. Damn straight.

Also, some of us are feeling a little more optimistic this week about our chances for the rest of the season (how many games will we lose this season):

  1. One game – 40%
  2. Two games – 25%
  3. Undefeated – 20%
  4. Three games – 5%

Question – for those of you who selected one or two games…who do you see on the schedule as a possible loss? I’m not liking Alabama getting their offensive groove back, and until our front seven can demonstrate consistent pressure in the backfield, I’m worried that that would be our one. I’m still concerned about Ole Miss, and Texas is looking less and less concerning by the week. Then, there’s Tech…but as good as they’ve been, they’re so heavily reliant on Haynes King I’ve got to imagine that Kirby is planning weekly for that matchup like he used to do in preparation for Fish Fry’s option offenses.

  1. I picked two losses. I can’t say who those will be, it’s just a feeling. There are still too many unknowns. Ole Miss’ new QB is a baller, so maybe they trip us up. Sark could bench Arch for our game, and we all know the Dawgs’ history against backup QBs.

    I’m also not convinced we have the depth to go undefeated. If we continue to have injuries along the OL, we could have 3 or more losses. If Gunner goes down, can Puglisi get us the wins against some of the tougher competition.

    I’ll be thrilled if we end up with 0 or 1 losses, but I won’t be shocked if we lose 2 or 3.

  2. I’m thinking Auburn and Tech. We go in to the Tech game with 1 loss , we may sit any one dinged up to prepare for the playoffs.

  3. Media polls are a joke thankfully these clowns no longer have total control of who’s the national champion.

    Tyler Simmons was on sides. We need to beat bama for than just the W. Deep 50/50 balls need to go our way. Bama will certainly fire away until we stop it. Stay healthy this team does not have the depth we are used too.

    Notre Dame has been and is always protected by the media. Their fan base is so large nationally it generates clicks for writers and eyeballs for tv. It’s classic rule# 1 follow the money. They have their own network tv deal. Until they stop generating money for the media the shill will continue. Their best tool for now is prop up USC.

    The Aggies and OU are my biggest surprises of the season. I’m looking forward to this weekend when Aubie travels to Norman.

    The b10 schedules are a joke. Steady diet of cupcakes mixed in with horrible conference games is the norm. Most of them only play a couple of ranked teams. By design very few chances for a loss. This will continue until the CFB playoff committee penalizes them. Which I don’t see happening. With their own mass media propaganda saying how great they are. Come playoff time it’s all about win loss record not strength of schedule. Yeah I know they claim it’s been changed. History saying they are lying.

    GT has a good team as long as their QB survives carrying the team every week. Brent Key is rapidly rising in support to replace Napier at FU.

  5. Two losses as the SEC once again did us no favors. Our two open dates are against bama and Florida. Both of them are off the week before too. Making matters worse both Texas and auburn have off dates the week before we play them and ole miss plays Washington state.

  6. It would be worth it for a no win Notre Dame team to get into the CFP and watch ESPN beclown themselves over it.

  7. I kinda do hope the Greatest 2 loss team of our era gets invited to the playoffs so they can get smoked like they normally do.

  8. ESPN FPI and the AP Poll are jokes. The AP had more voters get called out for their ballots than last week for stupid things like South Carolina being in the Top 10 I think and ahead of Vanderbilt. Guess they missed that game?

    The FPI has Michigan Top Ten and ahead of the team that beat them, Oklahoma. Ridiculous.

  9. One of the really awful things about CFB becoming just another bloated tournament sport is the endless speculation about the playoffs. We are three weeks in and that is basically all the media is talking about. I am concerned about beating Bama next week, not about what may or may not happen in December. We can talk about the prospects of teams like Clemson and ND making the playoffs after they have won the rest of their games and they can be compared against whoever is left standing at the end of the demolition derby of a season.

  10. You guys have to remember that FPI (even though it’s not good at what it is supposed to do) is intended to be a power rating, not a ranking. Rankings are about subjective team strength and results to date, while ratings are formulaic and way more heavily weighted for roster, coaching staff and strength of schedule. No excuse for ND to be ranked, but totally reasonable for their roster and staff to have them power rated in the top 25.

  11. I can only imagine what Bloody Tuesday is going to look like on tech week if they keep winning.

    Kirby allegedly had to stop Bloody Tuesday after the Ohio State game in preparation for TCU.

  12. Per my usual pattern, my Mumme Poll ballot rewards undefeated teams only but I refuse to vote for Tech … F them. I think we will lose one of the “big” games at home. I am concerned about Alabama but I think the loss will be late in the season and to Texas. I might change my mind about that if we beat Bama and after seeing Texas play Florida and Oklahoma on successive weeks.

    I am unconcerned about ND still being ranked. They have lost two games to ranked opponents by a collective total of four points. If they struggle against Purdue then they should fall out of the poll.
