Sorry for the late posting, the family is on vacation down here at PCB. One thing that I’ve enjoyed this week is seeing the unsurprising meltdown of Tennessee fans in the wake of Saturday’s loss. It is still glorious to me, and was a much needed cleansing of my soul considering I sat in the very same stadium 30 years ago just to watch the Vowels kick a game winner in Neyland. I get their pain, all too well, but it’s still sweet.
One of the more interesting takes I’ve seen from the Bobby Hillbillies is that this was a Hail Mary.
They are also losing it about uncalled PIs, the refs, etc. One interesting stat from Saturday that stands out, still, is one that the refs weren’t helping the Dawgs with: no false starts. I’d have to say that is some next level coaching and scheming. And the ensuing two point conversion was a thing of absolute beauty.
I think one element I should’ve included in the buying/selling post is that I’m buying that Branch is a difference maker. Going in motion just to pivot back and make the catch, that’s a hard concept to see coming. Chef’s kiss.
But back to the original point …yes, it was a 4th and 6 and a last chance…but a Hail Mary? I don’t see it. What’s your take on it?
Didn’t look like a Hail Mary to me.
I said somewhere I wasn’t crazy about us needing a missed field goal to win. For all the vowel bitching and moaning, they had to have it to win.

It doesn’t fit the definition. We needed 6 yards, not a score, on that play.
I’d go with “Soul Stealer” but whatever.
One thing I just love is the thought of the Vols and several other fan bases thinking what do we have to do the beat these guys? It would be great if we could do that to Bama!
A Hail Mary is a last grasp play where you launch it the length of the field and hope someone on your team comes down with it. The Gunner to London play was a well designed and executed play.
What little bit of gray matter those hillbillies had left has clearly leaked out of one of the many holes in their gums.
Correct. Contrast Puglisi’s pass on the last play of the first have with Stockton to Humphrey.
I noticed the ref on Georgia’s side was spotting the ball short of where the runner was down frequently. I know the refs try to put the ball on a yard line but that dude seemed to move it way back.
I recall that too.
Whatever they need to call it to help them sleep at night. That game is over and the annual Tennessee series is over. (It’s one reason why they were so very desperate to win). I’ll let myself think about them the next time they pop up on our schedule and not a moment before.
The best thig about this win is that the vawls will have to stew on this loss for at least another two years before there is even any thought at redemption, and by then Kirby will have all these young pups plus the upcoming class built into another 21′ type beast. Dawgs should be crazy good for the next 2-4 years
Hail a cab, Hail to the chief, The Hail you say, Proud Mary, Bloody Mary…that situation wasn’t even in the Hail Mary neighborhood…did “Old Lady Luck” look down on us Saturday…Hail yes…then again, some prayers were answered…GO DAWGS!!
The Humphries touchdown was just a damn good throw and over the shoulder catch. Nothing freaky about it. Not even as chancy as the Michael Johnson TD against Auburn in 2002.
You want Hail Mary dumb luck? You know what to dial up.
Don’t forget Pug threw a Hail Mary chunk at end of first half resulting in a pic. Thought it interesting Kirby went for points there rather than sitting on it.
I didn’t even realize Puglisi was in the game for that. Similar to a kneel down isn’t charged against a QB’s running stats, a pick on a true Hail Mary shouldn’t count against the QB.
The sherbert meltdown has been delicious to witness
My first thought about that pass was that it may have been desperation, but it wasn’t crazy desperation because even if it isn’t completed, there was still almost 3 minutes of game time left, and I was thinking we still had 3 TOs left. So if UT gets the ball on downs it was still possible to get the ball back with a minute or so left. A run, a screen, a short pass, a scramble were likely to be fully covered by UT, but with a long pass it’s probably one on one coverage with a young corner defending.
Kirby said in his post game presser that the coaches felt UT would paly to protect the sticks so this was the best time to try the endzone. They did. It was.
There was nothing Hail Mary about that throw. It was dropped in a bucket. The throw couldn’t be defended other than by hauling Humphreys to the ground and taking the DPI.
Damned idiots.
I’m gonna need to see everyone’s coaching credentials who weighed in on this. Thank you in advance.
