Red and Black, modernizing to online clickbait.
Shorter:
Over the years, many Uga’s have suffered from health issues that are commonly caused by over-breeding. Between genetic adversities and the blazing, obnoxiously loud environment of Sanford Stadium, our little mascot is put through a lot of stress. It’s time for a change. Instead of the familiar chorus of barks heard around the city on game day, UGA fans should begin cheering for a new mascot: the Georgia Spartans.
Gracie, put the laptop down and slowly step away from the bong.
In all seriousness, I don’t see a change in mascots – ever – but what would be a mascot option if we did have to change?

Excellent post Derek! This was what popped into my head while reading Gracie’s article…

Derek,
You’ve found something no one here will disagree with you on.
Are you just a little disappointed in that. 😉jk
That reality is a function of our very narrow audience. There are rooms where the sentiment expressed would not play well. Among them:

the perfect post
The Fighting Gracies
To avoid having herself replaced, she chose to pick on the history that embodies the Bulldog Nation, the four legged icon of mascots that all want a photo with…I say, not to hell with this uninformed young lady, but to open her mind and shake out all that loose matter floating around with no apparent connection to UGA relations, UGA is University of Georgia, gracie, if it is the spartans you desire, carry your dead ass up the street to east lansing…GO DAWGS!!
Maybe Landsharks or Black Bears would work???

I love Uga and I hope he’s always there. That being said, I understand what she’s saying about the issues with the breed. However, in the unfortunate event that the Seilers decide to discontinue the tradition of bringing Uga to the games, why would we need to change the team mascot? We can be the bulldogs without having an actual bulldog on the sideline,
We can also have a bulldog that’s not inbred and healthier, if needed. But I’m not sure it’s needed.
An American Bulldog would be a good option and is less prone to the health issues described in the piece.
I could get on board with an American. All white of course. In fact UGA I looke a great deal like an American Bulldog. They’re much mor athletic looking and acting too. That said; I loved Dereks post.
Hell on a hog too. The switch a catch dog flips is nothing short of awe inspiring. The absolute focus & fearlessness perfectly embodies fire, passion & energy!!!
Let’s roll the MF Tide!!Go Dawgs!!!
Against my better judgement my wife and I adopted a pit bull puppy a month or so ago. She’s turning out to be a great little dog and yes, she snores.
Our pit mix is the center of the household. I walk in and smile because she is so happy to see you.
We could bring back the Goat to graze on the sidelines…GO DAWGS!!
Except when the vowels or aubrun are in town. Talk about mistreated animals…
Wow. That’s just fucking embarrassing.
“This article is from guest columnist Gracie Owens, a junior journalism and English double major.”
I guess they left out “remedial” .
Almost as bad as the suggested heresy. Is Gracie’s description of the game day atmosphere inside our beloved stadium. Gracie calls it obnoxiously loud. I’m hoping we set new levels of loud this weekend in victory.
As a halftime pep talk do it for Gracie just doesn’t have that what do you call it motivation. Like perhaps I want you to break those MF’s, crush their F’ing souls. Make them never want to play you again. Now go out there and F them MF’s up!
Think I’ll barrow some of that for my lobster catching dive this morning. I’ll F them up then when asked how did I do when boarding the boat. I’ll just grin and point at the (hopefully) full lobster bag.
Ocean or bayside….
Ocean for me usually 40-90’ deep Florida spiny lobsters. Five decided to join us for dinner.
At that depth, you take a spear gun…
This is truly one of the stupidest things I’ve read in a long time, and that’s saying a lot considering the era we live in right now.
First: We have had been the Bulldogs since either 1901 or 1920 depending on which usage you consider official. The first Seiler family Uga was in 1956, 36-45 years later. Even if we stopped having a pure bred all white live bulldog on the sidelines, we wouldn’t need to change our mascot.
Second: We are routinely considered to have the best mascot in all of college sports. Why the hell would we just fumble that out of our own end zone?
So dumb.
I’m thinking Gracie had an assignment due and had writer’s block, so she spit this out just before the deadline. But given the state of journalism in this country, she’ll fit right in.
Keeping Uga is a hill I will die upon but I do support the continued effort to get the breed back to a healthier standard.
Yes. Control the controllables. Nobody wants sick or suffering bulldogs. But the idea that UGA is treated as anything but royalty is insane.
That dog lives and travels better than 99% of the worlds population
Well she’s just chic as shit ain’t she!
That has to be the dumbest s*** I’ve ever heard. Geez, put away the laptop, please.
If Gracie is worried about inbreeding perhaps she should talk to her older brother and dad. It seems he has contributed to a lack of genetic diversity in the journalism department. #noforks in the family tree.

In a continuation to tonyhigs’ post about an American Bulldog as an alternative I have an idea that might work to satiate all parties regarding the poor health of the UGA line. I am far from a geneticist or breed expert, but the original UGA I did appear to look more like an American Bulldog, so why not introduce some American Bulldog blood into the line to help the UGA line regain some health. UGA’s then would retain the traditional line satisfying the most ardent Dawg supporters, while at the same time strengthening the mascot we all love. The “english bulldog” is a wonderful animal to be sure, but they are prone to a ton of health issues and the line breeding only accents the problems I believe. The American is a very health breed, athletic looking and acting. I have owned one in the past and can tell you that they are incredible animals. Just an idea for conversation.
Defund Grady College!
Has Gracie ever stepped foot in Sanford Stadium other than to be in her freshman class picture?
Click bait at its worst.
Or … this is what you get when you raise the admissions standards to a point where kids who grew up wanting to be Bulldogs are brushed aside by undergraduate admissions.
A bunch of Free Speech absolutists out today. The UGA bulldog line has some health issues as a result of breeding practices. I think discussion of whether our Mascots would be healthier if the Seilers didn’t breed to achieve that “linebacker ” look and instead the Mascots were more like UGA 1 and UGA 2.
The suggestion to change the team nickname to Spartans overlooks a number of factors, including the millions the AA makes off the Bulldogs trademark, but things such as that are the types of things that are not on college undergraduate students’ radar.
I agree with her concerns about the animals. Her solution, though is something that has zero chance of being implemented . If it is a binary choice between trying to create and trademark brand new symbols and Mascots or maintain the status quo then there is no way the UGAA would change.
If someone has the opinion that the current breeding practices are fine for the animals then that is a legitimate position to advocate. If someone has the opinion that she or he wants a healthier line of Mascots, that is a legitimate position to advocate as well.
“She is an inbread herself” or “she is stupid” doesn’t add anything to the discussion about a real issue about current and future Bulldog’s health.
I’m not a geneticist, but I am a dog lover. My family has had mixed breeds as family pets, and our dogs have lived into their teens as healthy members of our family. Every pure-bred breed has its distinct set of health challenges introduced as a result of breeding practices. English cream golden retrievers are more susceptible to an aggressive form of lymphoma as an example.
If the vet school thinks the mascot line needs to have some variety to maintain the health of the Uga line, I would be fully in support of that. After all, we didn’t even start having live mascots until the 50s.
Agreed. We have been Bulldogs for over 100 years and we should keep a live , healthy mascot.
NO. Who gave the green light for that to be in the school paper? Change the nickname of all of the athletic teams just because of the health issues of the live mascot and change it to Spartans? HELL NO!
Spike agrees with this comment.
Gracie must be trying to get hired on at PETA after graduation. Enjoy Norfolk, Gracie.
Oh Gracie, you just farted in church.
Post of the day!!

That fart rattled the rafters!
Dayuuuummmmm
This is what happens when you spend years on campaigns to stop bullying in schools. Kids that have never been told “no, that’s a stupid idea you moron” think that everything they “feel” is valued and should be listened to. No Gracie, changing our mascot to the Spartans is a stupid idea. Bring back bullying!
Could you pick a worse week to publish this shit? GO LAY DOWN BY YOUR DISH.
Since she is so enthralled with the Spartans, a transfer to Michigan State would seem to be in order.
