The Importance of Being Earnest

Welp…

On Wednesday, Kirby Smart and his staff received some tough news as one of their offensive starters is unlikely to play. Pete Thamel of ESPN reported:

“Georgia starting offensive tackle Earnest Greene III is listed as doubtful for the Alabama game.”

When I saw the headline, I gotta admit, the first person I didn’t think about was Greene. Not saying it’s not a loss, but…

  1. Feel bad for Greene, but I have to admit a sense of relief hit me once I read his name. His back has obviously greatly impacted his effectiveness so better to prepare the other options at RT knowing he won’t play.

According to Rusty Mansell, Hughley is very good in passing protection, but he needs to improve his run blocking aggressiveness. He played well in Knoxville when he entered the game. If Gaston is healthy maybe he plays RT with Glover at guard. Two freshman on the right side might not be ideal though.

    • A guy on another blog who acts like he has inside info says: “It’s not final, but starting OL looks like: Freeling, Morris, Bobo, Glover, Hughley.

Expect to see more the TE Elyiss Williams Saturday.”

  2. I feel bad for the young man, but it is time to move on to someone who can play regularly & get some consistency in the offensive line

  3. Backs don’t just get well even it’s only muscular. It’s a lot of PT, possibly some injections and rest. You can’t just medicate it and go. I know and I’m not a guy who is carrying 300+ pounds on that back and core.

For Saturday, I hope that means Hughley, but for whatever reason, Searles hasn’t trusted him even after he’s done good things.

  4. Ernest hasn’t healed from last year. Odds are he won’t be able to play at the level of his freshman year. I feel horrible for him.

  5. Dear CMB,

Can we move a big TE over to the right side to help things out? I recall a previous OC who deployed 3 TEs from time to time with some success.

A fan who’s qualifications are suspect but not enthusiasm

  6. I hate that it has come to this, but it doesn’t help either him or the team for him to play with a back injury. I hope he gets well.

  7. Time to move on. Greene will not be a factor even if he heals later because of the conditioning factor. Now it’s next man up with the coaching staff knowing what the best options are. Aladawg

  8. I am sure they anticipated this and have been ready since TN. Glad it wasn’t a new injury to another player. I hope Green gets well quickly.
