Today’s question: who the hell wants to be the head coach at Penn State?

No in all seriousness, today’s question is this:

Which assistant on Kirby’s current staff is next in line for a head coaching job…and where?

I’ve seen some light speculation that Schumann is being looked at for Tulane, although money is on Blake Baker to move back to his Alma mater after the Kiffin debacle in LSU.

Anyway, who is next? Where will they land? P4 coaching or G5?

  1. I think Schumann is next in line for a head coaching job. Very few coaches go from position coach to head coach now. The ones who do struggle with the program management side of the equation.

    Mike isn’t going to get another shot, and I don’t think he wants it after his health situation at CSU.

      Hartley is a star for sure, but seems like he’d move to coordinator first? Maybe take over for Bobo?

  3. When is Buster getting an opportunity? Have to figure he’s on the radar after this year if he wasn’t already. His son just signed to play at Georgia Southern next year, so it’s not like he’ll be able to watch him on Saturdays regardless of geography.

  4. I’ve seen a lot of speculation that DeBoer was considering a jump to Penn State because he knows if he’s not annually in the playoffs at Bammer, he will get canned sooner rather than later. As far as our next assistant to get a HC job, Schumann but who knows where.

    • Let them can you, take the buyout and THEN take the next job. Jimmy Sexton will drill it into him (and offer career guidance).

    • There has to be something wrong with Penn State beyond the horrible history. If so many coaches are saying no thank you.

    • Joel Klatt brought this up about DeBoer, too. Makes me wonder if there’s something there. Can’t imagine him leaving Bama willingly, though. As hialtdawg23 said above, make them fire you.

      • Why get fired? The buyout typically ends up being reduced by whatever job comes next. If you don’t want to be there, move on.

        If DeBoer doesn’t like the situation and can earn equivalent (or even a little less) money, he should jump to the next thing.

        Can you imagine the pucker factor in Red Stick if that happened?

        • The ultimate chef’s kiss to beating bama Saturday would be. Sunday after losing to Georgia CKD announces he’s accepted the HC position at Pedo State.

          • That would be asking to have his trees poisoned and a brick thrown through his window.
            But it would sure make me LMAO!

          • My Bama friends would be celebrating. They don’t like the guy and would probably thank us for the assist.

  5. T Robinson seems to be on track to get a call for the big job. If Schumann goes, a season as DC might get him the juice. I could see some of the position coaches getting coordinator jobs, like how Faulkner went to an ACC mid.

    Bobo probably rides out Drew’s career and then gets to a spendin’ his Auburn (5 straight losing seasons, btw) buyout cash and then we’ll see movement on the offensive side.

    Normally, there’s a little more flux in coaching staffs but Athens is such a destination town and Kirby pays a little better (or maybe scores enough bonuses) – we seem to retain guys a little longer if they can hack it (unlike Luke and Monken). Ohio St seems to be the same but now we might see some shakeups over there with the WR Coach going to South Florida.

  6. Surprised no one mentions Brian Newberry (Navy)..
    Also his OC, Drew Cronic (former Mercer HC and recently turned down UAB as HC) has done a great job running Navy’s Offense.

  7. Glenn Schumann is likely next from Kirby’s staff but I think it’s going to be a number of years.

  8. More fun speculation: what if DeBore goes to Pedo U (we might get him on his way this Saturday) and Lane turns around and seeks the Bama job? Unlikely, but I think it’s just the sort of thing that could happen these days.

    • Unless Bama doesn’t want him, I can totally see Kiffin going to Bama. Afterall, he is a Ho!

  9. I can’t believe none of you guys have come up with the most obvious person to get the Penn State job. Ed “Coach O” Orgeron. He’s tanned, fit, rested and ready.

    Whoever gets the job will also get the 150th ranked recruiting class of 2026 (per 247).

  10. The two Penn State fans I know are delusional. They’re not appreciative at all of Franklin bringing them back from the depths of hell. They think they should be national championship contenders and beat Ohio State every year. The are surviving off of players that want to be there for whatever geographical reason or connection they’ve had to the school but can’t seem to understand that it’s going to be a tough sell to attract outside talent to their program with all the other better choices out there.

    • They just landed the 150th recruiting class, have no coach and the portal window is coming soon. Heh.
