North Avenue Natty

The Gnats have something to wear this year that isn’t a Waffle House paper hat, for a change.

I get it, I really do. You turned a program around as an interim head coach and got the program respectable and tenacious again. Reminded me of a quite I saw a while back:

Pride makes us artificial and humility makes us real. – Thomas Merton

I dialed it back and found this quote from Kirby after the 2018 loss to Alabama in the National Championship game:

“I love the men in this room. And when you lose games, here’s what you do. You don’t look to point the finger outward. You say ‘What can I do? What could’ve I done better?

Something about that game, and Kirby’s reaction after, made me a believer. Like many of you, I was stunned, sad, and listened to the whole after game presser sitting in silent disbelief at what transpired at the end of the game. But I knew there, in a moment of reflection, that a fire was burning in CKS that was going to some day result in a national championship. Two trophies and a hell of a winning streak later, here we are.

By the way, Tech is predicted to win 5.5 games this year. Let’s not forget that they were a inexplicable fumble away from not even being bowl eligible in 2023.

Can’t wait for the next chapter, Brent. Don’t be mad if I hope it’s no better than Billy’s.

  1. Brent Key is your typical Fech nerd. I want us to drop 50 on them in Sanford this year. I’m surprised they didn’t claim a moral victory in Atlanta last year.

    • Artificial makes for decent grass surfaces, nerdfootball makes for empty stadiums…the north avenue fucking trade school hc is playing for that coveted next contract, at a institution with an upside….GO DAWGS!!

  2. I’ll probably get push back and hate replies for this, but I kinda wish Key some level of success. Lord knows that I hope we continue to beat them like rented mules, but I think it wouldn’t be such a bad thing to have Tech respectable in football again. I would applaud them having regular 8 and 9 win seasons. I don’t know, maybe it’s a pity thing.

At the same time, I wouldn’t shed a tear if Florida goes winless for the next 30 years.

    • I never pull for tech. At

      A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G.

      Ever.

      • to quote Grizzard, quoting Jim Minter, I wouldn’t pull for tech with both engines out on the team plane.

        • To he clear, I never said I’d pull for them. Hell, I don’t even pay enough attention to them to pull for or against them. Just saying that I’d be fine if they weren’t a dumpster fire.

          • Oh, I understood that. It’s just that I prefer the dumpster fire.

          • Now, the Paul Johnson era was different. I’d have thrown gasoline on them if they were on fire. I hated that knee-destroying offense they ran. But they’ve been so pathetic since then… I don’t know, maybe I’m getting soft in my old age.

          • you are almost certainly a good dude and a great bulldog. But this is not The Way.🤣

    • I totally agree with you…until we somehow lose to Tech again in the distant future.

  3. I’m looking forward to Key handing out rings when GTU exceeds expectations by winning 6 games. Maybe this should be their motto this year;

“2024 GTU FOOTBALL: BOWL ELIGIBILITY FEVER. CATCH IT!”

  4. A Gasparilla Bowl win…what a year to be a Yellowjacket. That says it all.

  5. Respectability on Tech’s part makes beating them that much better and their losing to us that much worse!

  6. Tech and the rest of the ACC should get on the fsu program and make rings that only show number of victories and not losses.

  7. Tech’s respectability adds to our strength of schedule and makes the annual loss to us even more soul crushing. I want them to have hope, dreams and aspirations so that the futility of beating the DAWGS forces them to comfront the lie, “At Tech you can do that!”

    • “Hope is a dangerous thing… has no use on the inside!”

  8. I want the NATS to be just good enough that playing them does not hurt our strength of schedule. If that day comes, then we need to drop one of the other patsies and add a real team. We need to keep the NATS on the schedule no matter what so we can keep them as humiliated as possible year after year (I was going to say humble, but no NATS grad has ever shown any humility).
