Old fashioned hate – Georgia tech preview

This afternoon the Dawgs face off against the enemy in downtown Atlanta in a game that will go a long way to determining Georgia’s playoff position. A win likely clinches the 5-seed and a home playoff game and keeps the Dawgs in the running for a first round bye whether we return to Atlanta next weekend or not. A loss makes the next 360+ days miserable regardless of the outcome of the season.

Let’s get to the preview.

When Georgia has the ball

The troubles of the Fech defense are well chronicled. They are giving up over 400 yards per game and are on the lower half of the ACC in every team defensive statistic.

In particular, the Georgia rushing offense against the Fech defense appears to be a big advantage for the Dawgs’ offense. I expect the Jacketasses to sell out against the run and try to force Gunner Stockton to make plays in the passing game where they are giving up 240+ yards per game plus a pass efficiency of 141.

I expect the Georgia offense to have a day later today.

When tech has the ball

There’s no getting around the fact that they have the best offense in the ACC statistically averaging over 485 yards per game and 35 points. Haynes King has been the straw that stirs the drink for their offense.

The Georgia defense in particular has been stout throughout the year against the run and has improved dramatically as the season has worn on against the pass. Staying in front of the chains for the defense is going to be important. That keeps the QB run in 3rd and manageable from being a large part of the game.

I really wish we had CJ Allen available at full strength for this one.

What will happen

I expect the Georgia offense in the absence of turnovers to control the game throughout. I expect tech to throw the kitchen sink at the Georgia offense to try to break serve.

The nerds have nothing to lose as they are heading to a meaningless bowl game rather than an ACC title game or to a CFP first round game.

Dawgs win, and I believe we cover.

Final score: Georgia 38, enemy 24

I've been a Dawg my entire life. UGA was always my dream school where I received 2 Terry College degrees and met my DGD wife. I've been a season ticket holder for over 30 years and love the in-stadium experience over anything from Section HD. My first game in Sanford Stadium was the 1981 Auburn game where we clinched the SEC championship. The best game I've attended in person was the Midnight Miss against Ohio State (nite, nite!). The best home games I've attended were the 1984 Clemson game (the Butler did it) and the 2013 LSU game (that 4th down is still the loudest single moment I've experienced between the hedges). The game I love to win is against the Handbags (FTMF), and the game I hate to lose is the NATS (Tuck Fech).

  1. We.Run.This.State.Period.

When you end a one word sentence with the word “period,” do you still need a period?

  2. Predicting we will be frustrated fans early on as our D will see King make some plays to get in scoring position. Bobo may try to have us take some early shots. The faster we get up by two scores the more tech loses their rushing game. Play like champions from the opening drive and we blow them out but I sense this will be more like the Texas game…in control but letting them hang around for a little too long before pulling away. Don’t think it will take a trick play but has anyone seen Thorsen throwing in practice or Gunnner working on the FG unit a little extra? Dillon Bell on an end around and stopping to throw deep to Branch a la Appleby to Washington sure would feel good. Just saying

  3. Take the ball first and drive it down Tech’s throat to get the lead.
Get a stop on King on their first drive.
Drive it down their throats again…burning clock.
Go up by two scores at halftime.
Continue to drive it down their throats in the second half until their spirit and bodies are broken and all three dozen of the nerd faithful have left the building.
Bring on the third and fourth string to close it out with a late run by one of Georgia’s promising young RBs.

  4. I’m rewatching highlights from last year’s debacle… I don’t see our team looking anything like last year’s version at this point in the season. Beck with multiple checkdowns, not really looking like a confident leader, dropped passes all over the place, the defense not just not able to tackle even with multiple bodies on the ball carrier. I really think we roll today.
