Carnivores vs. Hamburgers – Texas preview

This never gets old.

Tonight under the lights of Sanford Stadium, Georgia and Texas square off for the first time between the hedges and for the 3rd time in the last 13 months. Texas must win to keep their playoff hopes alive, and Georgia needs a win that will likely lock up a playoff berth and still keep an SEC title opportunity in view. Needless to say, the stakes are high.

Let’s get to the preview.

When Georgia has the ball

As mentioned earlier in the first look post, Texas has been successful in stopping the run and sacking quarterbacks most of the season leading to an average of around 2.5 yards per carry. For the Georgia offense to function the way it’s designed, the offense must be able to generate a semblance of a running game throughout. Auburn is the only team to hold the Georgia offense under 100 yards this year as the Georgia ground game averages close to 200 yards per game and 4.6 yards per attempt.

If the Dawgs can rush for 150 yards, I like our chances because while the Texas pass rush has been excellent led by Colin Simmons, the Horns’ secondary has given up yards through the air.

When Texas has the ball

Texas was dreadful on offense early in the year as the Archduke was finding his way at quarterback. The Texas running game is averaging about 80 yards per game in SEC play. If Texas can’t stay in front of the chains, it could be a long night for the burnt orange, and they struggled mightily in both games last year against the Georgia defense. Tomorrow night would be a great time for the Georgia pass rush to show itself as it did in both games last year.

I believe we’ll hold Texas under 100 yards rushing. Can the secondary hold up over 4 quarters?

What will happen

Texas is going to get theirs, but can they get to 30? Alabama is much more explosive than Texas and couldn’t do it. Can Georgia get to the magic number of 30? The offense that showed up last Saturday absolutely can. Will it?

Gunner Stockton outplays Arch Manning. Georgia’s edge on the offensive line makes the difference in a game that goes 4 quarters.

Final score: Georgia 31, Texas 24

I've been a Dawg my entire life. UGA was always my dream school where I received 2 Terry College degrees and met my DGD wife. I've been a season ticket holder for over 30 years and love the in-stadium experience over anything from Section HD. My first game in Sanford Stadium was the 1981 Auburn game where we clinched the SEC championship. The best game I've attended in person was the Midnight Miss against Ohio State (nite, nite!). The best home games I've attended were the 1984 Clemson game (the Butler did it) and the 2013 LSU game (that 4th down is still the loudest single moment I've experienced between the hedges). The game I love to win is against the Handbags (FTMF), and the game I hate to lose is the NATS (Tuck Fech).

  1. Like any normal fan, I hope we blow them out. However a one score win while we get a favorable call from the refs to give them something else to bitch about would be 2nd best kind of win.

    • Can we please not suffer 3rd &Schumann for 3 quarters? If so I like us winning by 3 scores. But if Arch is converting 3rd & 8 all game we’re in for another nail biter where we don’t cover the spread.

      • FPD,
From your keyboard to the scoreboard I’d love to see that three score win. That would be a glorious night to remember. Sure hope we get just that.

With all the experts picking us to win just like they picked Texas last year in Austin. That worries me more than anything else. I expect a full on Dawg fight hard earned win. Agreed Schumann needs to bring it tonight. I’d feel better if I see a coach Boom sighting on our sideline tonight too.

    • I think we’re going to see a performance somewhere between Bama/Ole Miss (letting them move the ball at will for 3 quarters) and Miss St (shutting them down after the first drive). I expect them to covert 30-40% of their 3rd downs and score enough to keep it close. I think it’s a given that they’ll score on their first drive, since I’m not sure we’ve stopped anyone yet this year.

Bottom line, we win but don’t cover. Another nailbiter. Keep yer Pepto and bourbon close at h (preferably not together).

Oh, and please for the love of God, can we NOT have an officiating controversy for once? I’d also be happy if we don’t knock one of their key players out of the game just so, if we win, we don’t have to hear yet another obnoxious, entitled fan base throw whatif-isms at us for the next decade. Win straight up so there can be no doubt.

  2. Time for the Georgia D to introduce Texass to the real durty south. Hopefully Kirby goes full Bainbridge on ‘em tonight!

  3. Might as well sprinkle in some Donalsonville just to add a little more sowega spice to our boy from Bainbridge’e elixir

    • Married a girl from D’ville. South West Georgia girls are the best. The Seminole County FB team went 8-2 this year. Not bad for a small school.

  4. Arrived last night and fired up! Dear Lord, Atlanta airport and car rental has become a Hell hole but that’s another story. Interestingly nary a Texass fan insight and my old Austin friends have waived off all bets. Heh…..GO DAWGS!

  5. No clue what’s gonna happen but praying for a game where Grant Walther aka Conway Shitty has that look on his face all night. Go Dawgs!!!

  6. Seems like a favorable match up to me. Only question is whether and how far Arch has progressed since opening day. If he’s found wanting, dawgs by a lot. If he’s really turned the corner, it could be a nail biter.
