Nice history lesson here from Dan Magill. Enjoy.
Here’s a brindle bulldog, in case you were wondering…notice the odd connection to Tigers (I think we dodged a bullet by switching to an English Bulldog).

“He’s got good blood…sign him up”.

Story I heard was that on the 7th day, God was watching UGA vs tech and seeing the glory of the Red & Black he had created immediately said those are Damn Good Dogs and created our white English bulldog mascot then told Eve to go feed him while Adam threw a screen pass to beat the gnats.
I think they’re all English Bulldogs, brindle is just a coat. Most molosser breeds (bulldogs, mastiffs etc) can have brindle coats. Miss St uses an English bulldog too. I love Uga, but I wouldn’t hate if they bred them to be a little more athletic looking like Uga I was. Mix a little American bulldog or Boxer breed into the bloodline.
I’ll still never understand how the Seilers couldn’t manage to get a mascot to the national title game in LA. Even if they couldn’t make it personally and Uga was too old, send a trustworthy person with a stand in mascot. How hard is it? They get a lot of perks, privileges, and access for simply bringing a dog to football games. At minimum you would think having a mascot on the sideline for one of the most important games in Georgia football history would be a priority, When they announced they weren’t bringing one I put out a post for any LA residents with white English Bulldogs and forwarded responses to the athletic department. Never heard back. Hell they got one to Pasadena in 1942, presumably on a train.
Did they give a reason why they didn’t take him out there? Did it possibly have anything to do with covid and how strict California was still being at the time? They may not have wanted to deal with all the trouble of that to get a dog cleared through security at every place they would have taken him through during the covid hysteria CA was still having. Then again that may not have had anything to do with it, and if it were me I would just drive out there a few days early and get Uga there in my truck, so, who knows.
They just said Uga was too old. Total cop out, they just didn’t want to take a dog out there. Bring a backup dog, they literally breed them.
Dan was a treasure for sure. My mom and one of his daughters, Sharon, went to Georgia together and are still great friends today. As you might guess besides being a diehard Bulldog she is a huge tennis fan and has at least one grandson that plays college tennis. His middle name is Magill.
