Move B***h, get out the way! Kyle Field just hosted a George Strait concert with over 110,000 in attendance:
How would you feel about opening up Sanford as a concert venue? Profits from over 93,000 tickets could go a long way in the NIL game. Would the juice be worth the squeeze? Would you be okay with Sanford serving a dual purpose as a football stadium and concert venue? Pros? Cons?
Go Dawgs!
I guess I’m sentimental but I’d rather we didn’t do this. I also understand that we probably will.
I thought we already had done it at least once. But I would hate for it to become a regular thing. Plus, I suspect that when you count the expense of running something like that the net money is not that good anyway.
I’d rather this than ads on the field or jerseys.
But in a perfect world, no, I don’t want this in Sanford Stadium.
O.K., lot’s of input, ideas, blah, blah, blah…not no, but NO FUCKIN’ WAY, Sanford is what it is, a place where UGA football takes on the opposition, issues a travelers check, we say thank you and give them the big “L”, send that beatin’ ass to the bus station with a one way ticket to their village, done deal, nothing more, nothing less…Sanford Stadium is a football/graduation site, a beautiful place for celebration, after a shit load of hard work….GO DAWGS!!
We turned down Springsteen.
Good. He’s overrated as hell.
most artists who sell out stadiums are George Strait, Taylor Swift….
I have no idea because I don’t listen to any of that.
We turned down the Grateful Dead in the early 90’s too
Now that would have been an interesting night!
I thought it was cool that Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan played Sanford back in ‘13.
Heck, I even saw Brazil play soccer at Sanford during the Olympics. I believe I’m okay with more events there, especially if it helps the school and the team. Also, if I could take Uber to and from ATL and see games and other events there (not sure if Uber is in Athens to any great extent?), it would be a nice option. Any time you get dumped out of Mercedes Stadium after dark in downtown, with the family in tow, it’s a little dicey getting on Marta or getting an Uber. I think I’d rather be in Athens.
That idea is Ludicrous to let a bunch of gotdam hippies in.
Several years ago, my club in Austin acquired a well-known club in San Antonio so a couple of us drive down one day to play. We’re a twosome and the course is already backed up on the second tee. Two guys finish #1 and pull up to join us. Driver hops out, sticks out his hand to shake and proclaims “ Hi, I’m George Strait.” My knee-jerk response, heavy on the jerk, is “Sure you are…” Then it hits me. My partner still has no idea and asks him “So what do you do for a living?” I’m mortified but Mr. Strait took it in stride. He was a delight all afternoon and shot 83but sped away pretty quickly once we were done. Sent a thank you note via the club as we stupidly didn’t get his autograph hoping he might respond but alas he did not.
Yeah…I’m an idiot.
Great story there, FPD.
Luke Bryan/Jason Aldean were incredibly successful from what I understand. No reason not to other than the fact that MBS is much more convenient for the artist n a facility designed to host concerts. You aren’t going to get the Stones to come to Athens when they can go to MBS. You won’t get Taylor Swift to come to Sanford. Could they do something like Luke Bryan, Thomas Rhett, Jason Aldean or any of the other Georgia guys? Probably. If REM were still performing, could you get them to play Sanford? Likely.
It seems like an excellent opportunity to monetize the facility with a lot of the revenue coming from people who may be Georgia fans but not season ticket holders.
The same thing exists for Kyle Field and Houston.
I don’t see Taylor Swift coming to Kyle Field over NRG.
We let soccer dorks and Notre Dame fools on the field-what’s left that’s sacred? Shark = Jumped. Amazed the money grab cabal ain’t produced more concerts, tbh. The Rapid Eye Movement Band? Please? It’s 2024. Their star turn is further in the rear view than the Beatles were when the kudzu album cover dropped. Nothing is more hilarious than AD Josh Brooks on the local radio show claiming he calls them all the time about a concert. Ain’t happening: REM HATES football, UGA and definitely everyone on this site. Hell? ain’t they been broke up longer than they were a band? Are their fans even capable of staying up late enough to make it through a concert? That age group tends to complain about night games, so a concert is in their sphere? Lose your religion at the Grill and think it’s 40 years ago and smile – Coach Smart is fixin’ to lay a heater on CFB, inc so enjoy the present.
Well, since we’re talking about REM, here’s a good interview with Mike Mills.

Normally, I would listen to 5-10 minutes and then stop. Very interesting interview on many levels. Thanks for bringing it to may attention.
dude Mike Mills loves the Dawgs
Now that I think about it, Didn’t the Hootie & Blowfish guys lose a bet over the So Car game to the Mike Mills guy and have to roadie for REM for a show?
Yep, guy has a suite at Sanford and I can only assume is a Magill level contributor. Their manager, Bertis Downs, is also a big sports fan — not the Dawgs (he went to Davidson), but you can always find him cheering for Clarke Central on Friday nights in the fall. He wrote a back cover blurb for my book.
So you’re saying that if REM ever does a show at Sanford it will be the end of the world as we know it?
“…quite right…
and I feel fine!”
Just don’t call Driver 8 to get you home after the show.
Id rather not see it myself
I think the difference between doing it at Sanford vs. Kyle Field is that we don’t have carpet and concrete as our surface, so the restoration of our beautiful field has a far greater cost to UGA than the Aggies. Can you make up for it in ticket prices? Probably, and the incentive of an NIL contribution may help there. But there’s a lot of people who feel Sanford is sacred and only to be used for football and graduation ceremonies.
If the money adds up and the hedges don’t get damaged, I’m ok with it especially if the money go towards NIL, collective or whatever the correct channels are. Believe it was Earth Wind and Fire that my parents saw at Stegeman Coliseum.
i saw that one. It was ok, I guess. Not a concert guy
🙂
Kyle Field is natural grass just like Sanford.
Good lord, you’re right. Even though I live 2 hours away, I’ve never been and should have checked before I posted. I blame the SEC for not having UGA play here for 12 years! 😂
I saw George Strait at Turner Field in 1997 or 1998. It was a great concert if you like to watch somebody stand in one place.
Im no longer of standing around with 50k+ people to see a concert but if Brooks were able to put together a Garth Brooks show and they somehow air dropped him HALO from a C-130 into Sanford Stadium I’d watch the highlights even if he didn’t create a crater somewhere around Hull and Lumpkin.
Much like Joe Bidens underwear….depends…. If its profitable and they use the funds to offset costs…its just good business, if theres not enough margin for the aggrevation then no…
sounds like someone needs to do a cost benefit analysis, otherwise its a perfectly good venue just sitting there…

Do they sell beer at games and did they sell it at the concert?
I would be okay with it with the right music. I’m not country or rap type of person.
We had to pass on the Eagles on the Long Run Tour in ’80. They would not play less than 15,000 seats so the Steg wouldn’t cut it. We asked Big Man Joel Eaves for Sanford. Turns out Vince was not a fan. JK, he didn’t want the field trashed. They played Hogtown instead.
TLDR
My thoughts are: multi-use venues that have grass turf are shit condition for sports. See: Gurley, Todd
Also, as someone who sells beer/wine potentially to Sanford I’m all for this because my UGA hats don’t pay my fucking mortgage.
