Monday Wonderings – Delusions of Grandeur

How it started:

I was at the Alabama game in 2008. The Tide had just scored another of what seemed like their millionth TD of the day, and the Tide fan next to me literally threw his drink in the air and I was soaked in Coke (I think).

Bama fan: I’m sorry, it’s just been so long since we’ve been this good.

Me: You do know you’re in Athens right? It’s been ages since we’ve been good.

Bama fan: Yeah, I know, it’s just our standard versus y’all’s.

How it ended:

It’s fall of 2023, and we’re sitting by the pool in Panama Beach. An Alabama fan notices my hat, and says “ damn, never thought I’d say this, but congrats”.

I told him I was happier on the Gulf Coast the past few years not hearing “Roll Tide” every fifteen seconds.

Him: If anyone was going to do it against us, I’m glad it was Kirby. He did well by us, so no hate here.

Today’s question: What’s the most delusional fan base for no good reason?

I’ll start:

I hate Alabama, but can appreciate them, but Carolina? It’s like a bunch of Tech fans congregated east of Athens.

What’s your thoughts?

  1. It probably is South Carolina. They’re just dumb. I understand wanting your team to win even if you know they probably won’t but they really seem to think they’re “this close” all the time. And they hate us and think it’s a rivalry on our end too. The Kirby era is killing them.

I don’t remember who it was but somebody posted on GTP about a Gamecock fan throwing a balloon full of yellow paint at them one time. In ‘13 we were walking to the stadium and got right there at the bookstore to find there was a good sized group of SC fans ganged up and taunting our fans as they walked by. One of them did the gator chomp at us for reasons only he understood. I made a smart ass comment to him and kept moving. They’re probably the dumbest and most delusional. And the two tend to go hand in hand.

    • I tell the Gamecock relatives the same thing that I tell the Tech relatives….”its not like we are big rivals or anything like that anymore”. The reactions range from spitting mad to sad acknowledgement.

    • As much as I hate it, I will have a front row seat to their delusion as my youngest is about to attend S. Cackalaky and will be in their marching band. Let’s hope that their cannon shots are muted and fired infrequently.

  2. I want to make a special mention of Florida State fans. Those people think it’s still 1993 and truly believe they are a national power and “comparable to Georgia and Alabama.” They really believe that. The amount of trash talk that I heard before the Orange Bowl was unreal and the ones I know were in total disbelief as the predicable played out in front of them. Then they shifted gears and started making excuses. Kirby told the team last season that the past has nothing to do with the present and future and that they don’t text or call each other. Florida State fans don’t seem to know that. They think that somehow the nineties has a carry over effect to now and means they deserve consideration among the top teams.

    • correct. I live down the road from USC jr. and it’s to the point you can dismiss their lofty expectation, but auburn fans are just plain arrogant with their visions of grandeur. Every year auburn fans think they have a heisman trophy winner and will contend for championships. FTMF’s.

  3. It’s a trick question. Only South Carolina has the year in, year out sort of delusion that counts losses as moral victories. Sure, FSU was a bit over rated in the minds of their fans, but they were at least undefeated – no moral victories needed – until reality set in.

  4. Wait til you meet the clowns from Austin. “This is our year!” Begins in January and ends in October.

    • We’ve been selected to introduce them to SEC football. If we don’t take care of business, they have a chance at a big season.

  5. Tennessee. What have they even ever won? Now they’re bumping they gums about beisbol (which nobody cares about). Losers point to other sports as a crutch (I damn did it close to forty years). They act like they cain’t turn door knobs because of rings but what football title have they won, hell, what bowl game? When have they even played for an SEC title (In anything) ? South Carolina’s enthusiasm with Vandy’s trophy case and Bama’s mouth. I guess when the incest, illiteracy and lack of dental hygiene gives you spare time, loser ass bums invent greatness about themselves …Other than that they suck, but their gameday gear works for the early morning Community Service.

    • Do they still have a losing SEC record for this century? Last I checked, that was the case.

    • South Carolina is the worst by far. Other than an Eastern Division title they ain’t done squat. They’re the little shit talking asshat in the bar who only mouths off when their Marine brother and his friends are with him.

Tennessee has at least won the SEC a few times and 2 National Championships in their history, most recently in 1998.

  6. My pulse started picking up at BDS on that night in late November last year when, late in the fourth quarter, they were within an 8-point, ref-aided tie game. I got a quick flashback to the late 90’s Tech fan when they pulled off a 3 game mini-streak against us. All rival fans are mouthy, but Tech fans take it to another level when it comes to profanity and white-hot hatred when it comes to UGA.

  7. Most delusional for no reason – South Carolina (bless their hearts)

Most obnoxious for no reason – Fech

Dumbest – the Tooth Nation rank and file (I know a lot of Tennessee people who are quite reasonable)

Most obnoxious for a reason – Alabama (the rammer jammer thing pisses me off)

Most delusional for a reason – Florida/FSU (they know they should be good and continue to act like they are)

Dumbest but think they are smart – Auburn (the fact they still defend Nick Fairley should tell you what you need to know)

    • what eethomas said.

they’re all delusional, just in slightly different ways. FTMF, one and all.

      • Just as Mr. EE said, but I truly hate those Fl. assholes.

I hate the Fl players, the Fl coaches and the Fl fans.

A bunch of as swipes. FTMK’ers.

    • Obnoxious, dumbest , delusional, and I’d add cheaters, Bama. I’ve been to Bama in Athens back in the 90s and Bama vs Washington in the Dome for a playoff game wearing Crimson, last time I’ll do that. It was like a Phillies vs Braves game with a playoff on the line. Bammers were rude to Washington fans who were very nice, and these were club level seats. It was an eye opening moment that more less put my SEC vs world fandom to an end.

  8. Texas is the new Tennessee.
In hate those egotistical arrogant muthafukers.

  9. All very good comments but because of the biggest SOB of a coach in the history of football, Steven Orr Superior, I hate the Gators. Too many long afternoon in Jacksonville with the great unwashed for me to not hate them. Now I live among them, I obviously did something wrong in my life.

  10. For me it’s Old Myth. They’ve never won ANYTHING! Heck, they just had their first 10 win season ever 2 or 3 years ago. We absolutely demolished them in Athens last year and they (and the media) think they’ve closed the gap with their portal transfers. Every year is their year.

And it’s not just their football fans. The students, and especially the alumni, think they are something special. I’ve heard them refer to themselves as “the Harvard of the south”. I guess those morons have never heard of Vanderbilt or Baylor.
