We’re Closed

The Portal has closed, so how did Georgia fare?

With just fifteen transfers out, Georgia lost the fewest players of any other SEC program.

Georgia also took in the fewest with 8.

Guess Kirby knows something about recruiting and retaining talent.

  1. Hopefully we can pick up some more help on the lines of scrimmage from those in the portal. We lost some depth on the offensive line. Believe we have 4 or so slots below the 105 limit

  2. I would love to know how many of those guys overall are on their 2nd (or more) transfer.

If Kirby didn’t love his roster entering 2026, you probably would have seen those numbers go up. I think there was a focus on keeping the 2024 and 2025 classes together.

With a couple of exceptions, we came out ok, and we picked up a nice Beaver.

    • Yeah I do know we had a big war chest going into portal season. We chose to spend the greater part of it on retention. I personally think that’s smart. Why recruit them in the first place if you don’t care about retaining them? I think when it’s all said and done Kirby’s way will prove to be the best way. Who has won any championships with Portal Magic? Indiana will but that is as much about a historical anomaly in Covid seniors that won’t be repeated and Cignetti being a legit coach as it is about Portal Magic. And they had incredible luck with injuries on top of all that. What happens if Mendoza gets hurt? They’re done. Portal Magic aint where it’s at. Do we really think Ole Miss is going to be a power now? Come on, act like you’ve got some sense.

      • Not so sure Indiana can handle the physicality of Miami.
I think Indiana’s strength comes from having mature players that manage their assignments on just about every single play.
And Cig is a weirdo but he’s done a good job.
Their QB is great…But if M can get him slightly off his game and if the best Beck shows up…The U might win the thing.
I don’t have much of a preference on who wins…but as the game progresses I’ll almost surely start to lean towards one team.

        • I never had a problem with Beck or the fact that he left until stuff started circulating about how he handled his exit. I don’t know if the stuff Herbstriet is spouting came from Beck or if it’s just him seizing on any opportunity to shit on Georgia but the stuff about Beck ghosting Kirby and the rest of the coaches is bad enough on its own.

  3. The portal leaving is closed. There are still 1000s in the portal Kirby can pick up.

  4. Based on my (limited) research, it appears Dawgs spent their war-chest on keeping the players they had, versus spending to acquire additional players. When it comes to roster-building, Kirby knows what he’s doing. I’m good!

  5. For 2025, the proof of concept seems to be that overall experience may be as/or more important than overall talent. Read a good article in The Athletic yesterday breaking down composition of playoff teams. UGA & anOSU had the most blue-chip players of the 12 teams in the tournament. Both teams also had the fewest # of combined career starts among the same 12. Meanwhile Indiana and Miami are both top 4 among career starts on their rosters. My point being that Kirby keeping all these seasoned players in the fold has to bode well for ’26.

      • I have a plethora of thoughts, concerns and worries about aspects of the program that I’m just sort of sitting on for the moment. TBH still haven’t totally gotten over the Sugar Bowl. But I’m confident in Kirby’s ability to recruit and trot out a top 5/top 10 roster like clockwork.

  6. If losing the 4th or 5th best DB is the worst thing that happened to Georgia in this year’s portal, I’d call that a huge win. Getting an elite pass rusher, 2 good safeties and a solid WR was really key. Wish Kirby had tampered with some old OT relationships we had to replace Freeling, but it’s not like he doesn’t have 5 talented OL guys. Just gotta coach up the depth in spring and summer. Got another top 5 team for sure.

  7. Kirby is cooking up something special for next season. We will have a team that got great experience this year, and will have a year of improvement.

    • I like the positivity. But in this day and age its going to be very difficult to take a measure of a team until about midseason. And the 2026 schedule is such that we might not know until the postseason.

Three big road games, but are they against 3 good teams? Will OK be anything? I see 4 1st year coaches on the schedule.
