Proud to say I was playing tenor saxophone in this recording. We rehearsed and played this in the corner of Butts Mehre way back when, some time ago, and it still makes the hairs on my back stand up every time I hear it.

Absodamlutely correct. The roar of the crowd when we hear the first note from the trumpeter is the reason my 61 year old ass still attends games, can not get that same feeling from watching on tv.

I’m sure the Redcoats are about a week away from hitting the field for fall preparations. Always cool to hear the dulcet sounds of the University of Georgia Redcoat Band. Go Dawgs!
Trombone parent here – they start back August 9. If you want a treat – head out to the intramural fields on Friday night before a game and watch their practice. Gotta drive all the way to the back but you can basically tailgate, kids can run around the nearby softball field. You can even climb the observation tower to watch. Starts around 5ish I think(?). You’ll hear all the favorites and if you stay til 730-8ish, they close with the Redcoat chant and Party at the 50. Fun to watch and listen.

I ushered a lot of games in the 80s with scouts, and my favorite thing leading up to the game was hearing the band marching in led by the percussion (quints, maybe?).
When did they introduce the Battle Hymn?
Since I grew up in Athens and knew several members of the Redcoats over the years, I always appreciated the blood they put in to make gameday more special.
I’ll also give a shout out to Nathan at Chapel Bell Curve for an always interesting podcast, with many a side rant, and nerdy musicianship info.
