Tuesday Refugee Roundtable: First Blush

For today’s Roundtable:

There’s been some good ones, for sure. To me, though, one of the all-time best that I can watch time and time again:

Some others that come to mind: 1997 Georgia-Florida, 2021 National Championship, 2022 Peach Bowl, and 2002 Georgia-Auburn.

How about you?

  1. I have it on VHS ( original recording my dad made) and of course you can find it on YouTube, but mine might be the 1980 Ga/Fl game. I was only 10 years old at the time and missed most of the game because I was playing football down the street with friends. We came back inside right before Florida gave Georgia the ball back when all hope looked loss. It would be great to relive that game all the way through not knowing the outcome.

My favorite part of that old recording is the pregame interview with Herschel. “That ball ain’t heavy.”

  2. 2018 Rose. 1981 Sugar and the sea of red rushing the field.

I’d give anything to be back on my grandparents’ living room floor in 1984 listening to Munson (because Clemson was banned from TV due to probation, natch).

WE’RE GONNA TRY AND KICK ONE A HUNDRED THOUSAND MILES.

WE’RE GONNA SET IT DOWN ON OUR OWN FORTY-NINE AND A HALF.

THE KICK IS UP, IT’S A LONG ONE, A LONG ONE….

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD

  3. 2017 cocktail party. The nail biters are exciting but the total physical ass whipping games are cathartic.

  4. Nothing to me can beat “RUN, Lindsay, RUN”. And I still watch it from time to time. 2022 NC game too. Just watching us beat Alabama never gets old.

  5. 2018 Rose Bowl for sheer entertainment value. 2022 (2021) natty win against Bama was the most cathartic. And for pure ass whoopery, I still select this over jack slapping TCU:

    • That was one of the best bowl games ever. Remember the you really don’t want us reaction of the Georgia players watching that Hawaii War dance prior to kickoff. You just knew you were about to watch a total beating.

      • THIS! I remember getting constantly lectured about “not” “understanding” the “culture” of Hawaii. I just responded: we got culture in Georgia, too and look forward to a cultural exchange at the sUGAr Bowl. Very satisfied with the outcome.

        • That made me LOL calling it a cultural exchange. That struck me as really funny thanks for the laughs! I can still clearly see those dancers trying to intimidate our players.

The result looked more like assault with malicious intent from my seat. Once the game started. If CMR had not pulled his foot off their throats the result was worse than the TCU beating. Georgia had become the best team in the land by that time.

      • Yep! This is one is a favorite. The warriors were doing that war dance thing with the Dawgs looking at them like they were … food.

      • I was there and loved spanking their butts, but what I remember most about that game and why I still hate them with a passion today is we had a whole row of LSU fans all garbed up in that hideous purple pulling so hard against us. My brother and I damn near came to blows with a couple of them. LSU fans are POS!

      • RIP Colt Brennan. I felt bad for the guy. He was a good QB but didn’t have a team around him, and our guys were pissed about being shut out of the NC by Herbie’s blathering. I was calling for him to be pulled from the game after about the 3rd quarter.

Hawaii fan in front of me was a dick before the game. Didn’t have much to say during or after the game, though.

BTW, I saw where Steve Tanneyhill died recently. That took me to Youtube where I found the complete game from 1995. Tim Brando calling the game for JP (back before he became a huge douche), Bobo starting the season as QB1 for the first time after Zeier, and Kirby Smart as a freshman playing safety.

        • We met a Hawaii grad in the hotel elevator who said he got his under grad at GT. He explained he had never got to enjoy beating Georgia at tech so he flew in to watch Hawaii kick our ass. He was so sure they were going to win big. Funny I never saw him again. He was probably at the airport by halftime.

  6. The Rose bowl not a close second. The game stakes were something I thought we might never get to again. Then the starting with the parade, the setting and then the highs and lows of that crazy game. I remember a totally stranger beside me losing it grabbing me screaming “that’s solid gold right there a game changer” at Speck’s long field goal before the half. He was right those 3 points a requirement to victory.

We’ve had other crazy endings go our way sure. Never did you know we’re going to the National Championship game now right after one. The long suffering wait was over. Watching Kirby’s BMF reaction and the celebration. The total relief and joy walking out.

Yeah Indy was also amazing not as great walking outside. The TCU obliteration was a different level of satisfaction. Knowing Georgia was at the very top of the CFB world was pretty cool. In Athens I’d go with 2013 LSU it brought the noise levels and excitement to something I didn’t think were possible at the time at that time.

  7. The worst thing about moving was losing all of my favorite games on DVR. But out of all of them, it’s an easy question– the Rose Bowl. I can’t count how many time’s I have watched that one.

Not exactly a second place (at some point I’ll just watch any of them no matter the rankings), but I was visiting my parents and I woke up to see the “storm the field beat Tebow” Cocktail Party was just starting on maybe SEC Network? Dad was sipping coffee, so I grabbed a cup for myself and we just sat there in silence with our mugs and watched the whole thing barely saying a word to each other. Good times, good memories.

  8. Lots of great Georgia games to choose from, but if you’ve never seen a game before I’m assuming there’s no team loyalty. In that case, it’s the Vince Young Rose Bowl. What a game and with the highest stakes possible.

  9. This is a great question and thread and I’m enjoying everyone’s memories!
As for me..just about all of what has already been said!
It wasn’t because it was (honestly) a great game but just the way the ESPN crew and the foolish sports media and the Hawaii team and fans thought they had some kind of spiritual magic and edge over our Dawgs made the beat down so much fun.
Before the game, all of the ESPN morons except Granny picked Hawaii…Granny (Lou Holtz…who once won a natty at ND)…laughed at them and told them they were about to see what a good, physical SEC team will do to a pretender. (My paraphrase).
For just a while, I admired Granny (Lou Holtz…who once won a natty at ND).
Actually the days of Holtz (who once won a natty at ND) were much (well ok..a little ) better than that it is now.
    Yeah!..that beat-down was sweet!
Our Dawgs stomped the foolishness out of the Hawaii Shamans.

        • I agree he wasn’t a big winner more over rated than anything else.

To be fair he did make the chickens a tuff out. That at the time it was a heavy lift. SOS used his foundation till we made him quit too.

    • I remember the look on Holtz’s face and screaming as he watched David Greene hid the ball with his back to the defense. Only to spin around and throw a perfect deep TD pass. That’s my favorite memory of him. I thought he was going to stroke out screaming he’s got the ball pointing at Greene.

  10. Waiting for AI to generate UGAs greatest v tOSUs say since 1970. Kirby beating Woody…or Corch…with Stetson and Herschel, Pollack and the ‘22 D.

    • I asked Mr ChatGPT:

“I’m a huge UGA football fan. Someone joked that they would love to see AI create an all time Bulldog Football team. can you do that?”

Oh absolutely — and for a UGA super fan, this is a mandatory exercise. 🐶🔥

      🐾 FINAL THOUGHT

If this team lined up in Sanford Stadium at night, no one survives four quarters.

  11. It wasn’t on television but if I could time travel back and relive it it would be the Georgia vs. Alabama weekend the first weekend in October 1976. I would want to relive the Friday night and Saturday night experiences as well as the game.

  12. It’s the ’21 natty for me. I remember the disbelief and despair after Bennett’s 4th quarter fumble and Bama’s ensuing touchdown. Then Bennett miraculously leading two scoring drives, Bama with a chance to erase their 8-point deficit, and all their hopes evaporating with Kelee Ringo’s pick 6.

After the pick 6, I told my wife that I wanted to go upstairs and get our 3-year-old daughter out of bed before the clock hit all zeroes, so we could all be together when Georgia won its first national title of my lifetime. She said “No! don’t you dare wake her up!” and I said, “I won’t wake her up, I just want her to *be here*.” I wanted to remember that moment with all of us being present for it. So I carefully scooped our daughter out of her bed and went back downstairs so we could all be together as the clock wound down and the victory became official.

  13. Lots of great games listed here and all worthy of being watch again and again. What about if we just made this for the current season? If so, I would pick the Tennessee game as I actually expected us to lose after the embarrassing display in the previous game vs Austin Peay and the 1st quarter reinforced that feeling. Fortunately, the team started displaying their 2025 4th quarter magic in that game.

    • Totally agree great point. Honestly I thought we were done at one point at UT. As Larry would’ve said you did too. It was a great comeback win. It saved the season in hindsight. At 10-2 with a loss to bama I doubt we get in the playoffs.

  14. The 3 obvious ones are the 2017 Rose, 2021 Natty, and 2022 Peach.

As far as moments I wish could relive?

The 2004 Cocktail Party was extremely cathartic.

2007 against Auburn remains the most unglued moment in Sanford Stadium history.
