Saturday afternoon Ole Miss as the 6 seed takes on the AAC champs and 11 seed Tulane in Oxford. Duke’s win in the ACC championship moved the Green Wave up one spot and likely resulted in Notre Dame’s ouster from the field. Ole Miss and Notre Dame likely would have been a much more attractive game for TV. Instead, we get a rematch of a previous mismatch for a spot in New Orleans to face the Dawgs.
Series record: Ole Miss leads the series 44-28 and holds a 3 game winning streak in the series.
Last meeting: In September, Ole Miss ran out to a 23-3 lead and never looked back cruising to a win at Vaught-Hemingway. Ole Miss rolled up almost 550 yards of total offense as Trinidad Chambliss had 419 yards of total offense and 2 TDs. The Ole Miss defense yielded almost 180 yards of rushing at a 4.6 yards per attempt clip.
Gambling degenerate facts: Caesar’s has Ole Miss as a 17.5 point favorite with a money line of -950 and a point total of 51.5.
How should a refugee watch this game: The easy answer here is how do the Rebel Black Bears look without Joey Freshwater on the sideline. His play calling and feel for the game are a big reason for the Rebels’ explosive offense and their QB play throughout the season. Can Charlie Weis, Jr. guide Chambliss and the offense to make it difficult for Tulane to keep up with them? How will Pete Golding respond to being the man on the sideline?
I’m just as interested in seeing what Jon Sumrall is all about as he moves to Hogtown to be the chief Handbag. I don’t know if this game will be a good barometer for his prospects in North Florida.
Interesting statistic: 4.33 (Ole Miss’s average yards yielded per rush)
Ole Miss has been subpar defending the running game. Mississippi State rang up 262 yards on the ground in the Egg Bowl. As you all know, the Dawgs chewed up yards on the ground in the regular season meeting with them. Tulane’s best shot is to be able to move the chains with the running game, play keep away, and shorten the game.
Early outlook: Similar to other G5 playoff game, the visiting team does not have a lot of paths to stealing a win. Tulane has a better shot than JMU because of the coaching turnover at Ole Miss and the unknown of whether Golding is ready to be the guy.
I just don’t see the Tulane defense getting the number of stops necessary to get the win, and I’m not sure they can do it enough to cover the spread.
Ole Miss takes care of business and will be in for a rude awakening on Sunday morning when they are facing a Georgia team that has become a force.
Final Score: Ole Miss 38, Tulane 14
What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
My guess is Ole Miss players want to show the world it’s about them not their ex coach. That’s not good for Tulane or it’s playoff experience.
Tulane’s players in a similar situation, but I’m certain the product on the field isn’t quite the same on one side of the ball. Another 5 td blowout? Or is OM too distracted looking ahead? I’m going OM by 20, take the foot off the gas early to rest (just don’t look at my Fabris rankings if you’re taking this as actual betting advice…lol)
As arse of an idea this game is, Kirby & Company getting film on Lil Ol Miss post Kiffin’s Krimson Koaching might be of value.
p.s. I typed this while tearassin’ my Altima to the Kroger so I can disable all the selfcheckouts in town. Publix is next!!!!
Trinidad Chambliss actually gonna play this week…or next? Some folks think he might be more loyal to Lane than to the Rebs.
You have a starting QB opt out of the CFP and enter the portal? Talk about a firestorm.
Word is Lagway is interested in getting coached by Junior.
Chambliss opting out was a bit of a parody account post gone wrong. Clickbait rules the social world! Unfortunately, a bunch of reliable accounts picked up on it and ran with it, because news is slowing down and people wanna get paid!
Many in Jort nation believe Lagway was way more interested in the off field benefits of being the star QB. Work ethic was lacking or should I say lagging.
Junior likes his QB’s tuff with a chip on their shoulder. So far that hasn’t been part of Lagway’s game. I would be surprised if Lagway became the LSU starter next year.
Watch him end up at Tech
Another seal clubbing like JMU/Oregon. After this year the P4 and G5 need to separate for the Mickey Invitational like 1-A and 1-AA. Let them have their own playoffs and championship. There is ZERO reason for a G5 school to sniff the CFP.
I don’t know – if letting the underdogs in wreck Notre Dame and Tejas like it did this season, it might be worth it.
It’s very enjoyable until it’s us. I can’t help but believe if UT makes the field goal they find a way to screw us. Notre Dame gets in over us. The SEC gets four teams only. We join Vandy at 10-2 locked out.
This game is only interesting to me since the winner is our next opponent. Will it be another blowout? I hope not.
Tulane hasn’t beaten Ole Miss since 1988 and Ole Miss has a 14 game winning streak in their series (if you count the 2010 & 2012 games that Ole Miss had to vacate in the Houston Nutt & Hugh Freeze eras). I’m not expecting much from Tulane, but you never know. There’s so much coaching distractions going on in this game that it might actually be worth watching. I doubt it, but we’ll see. Maybe Trinidad Chambliss is considering all of the money he could make at LSU that he’s not fully present and prepared for this game? That is, if he plays at all.
More of a shootout like the NBA all star game. OM D will allow scores from apathy but the O will race up and down the field. 48-34 or something like that.
A lot of good observations on this? Game? Two teams meeting in the playoffs that lost the coaches that got them there to teams that ran their coaches for not getting to the playoffs. Delicious. And it might even trickle down to players opting out, too? All so we can beat Ohio State (if they advance) for the Natty that Tejas was supposed to play PennSt for? Way to go Playoffs…
I believe Golding will try to make a statement and boat race Tulane. OM defense will play better than normal and the Tulane offense will shrink to the occasion. OM 42-17 winner, with the final score no wear near the seismic gap in the talent differential. Hope I am wrong and Tulane can put up a fight or at least play physical.
I really don’t know what to make about this game and if we will be able to glean anything for our matchup.
On one hand, we could see two coaching staffs and groups of players going through the motions given all of the uncertainty and transience of the coaching staffs.
On the other hand, you could see two coaching staffs and groups of players who let it all hang out with all kinds of shenanigans so the game will be entertaining.
Just when we thought the Playoff couldn’t get any more screwed up we get this crap. OU and Bama in a rematch, Tulane and Ole Piss too. Then we continue the rematches with Old Piss and Us. It will be a good game but damn please stop with the rematches.
Eleven playoff games – two guaranteed in season rematches and four possible rematches including a possible SECCG or B1GCG rematch for the title.
Isnt Lanes OC still at Ole Miss going to coach this game? I mean I know its not the brain power, but its still counts for something right?
I heard that too. I also heard his entire offensive staff is following him to LSU. So would that mean the AD told Kiffin that they can stay and coach through the playoffs but you can’t?
Couple of short observations: rematches are almost guaranteed when there is a field of 12, especially when so many teams are from the SEC. I think Old Lady and Tutulane make a better match up than most of ya’ll. Can’t see the Wave cresting, but I do think they will beat the spread. Either way, one of them will be our opponent, so I am going to watch. If anyone knows if there will be a Skycast of the game please holler.
