Tuesday Refugee Roundtable: Changing Minds

Today’s question: what does it take to fully flip the mind of a football fan?

Given the very distinct camps that exist regarding Bobo and Searels, I’ve wondered what it would take to change people’s minds on their opinion of coaches and coordinators?

A few things:

And…

Also…

Along with…

First, keep the discourse civil.

Second, is your mind changing at all from your preseason perception of either Bobo or Searels? If not, what will it take to make you confident in the coaches by season’s end?

  1. Juan Gaston is a grown ass man! I need a cigarette, a shower, and a nap after watching that block.

  2. I’ve had my fair share of criticism this year for Bobo and Searels (mostly Searels), but Saturday’s game was a thing of beauty. I’m not so proud that I can’t give them praise when it’s deserved. Does that mean that I’m ready to jump fully on their bandwagon? Not completely. Let’s see how we do against UF and Texas, two much stouter defenses than the Rebs. If we take it to those teams, then I will gladly give them my most sincere mea culpa.

  3. I told those that I know that Bobo deserved a chance because he coached Joe Cox to the season record for TDs and Carson Beck for whatever reason didn’t improve under Bobo. Also, Searles had coached singular NFL guys, never the talent in the room Kirby was going to give him post Coach Luke. THIS IS NOT I TOLD YOU SO! Just my thoughts. Cade Cubelic claiming we had the best OL in the SEC and Terrance Edwards giving the vote of confidence to Cooley as a WR coach also kept me at DEFCON not panicked. Also, Bobo might be a little thicker skinned dealing with Kirby, than Monken was (total guess on my part). Still a lot of Football ahead of us, Dawg Fans. Kirby likes this team and seems to have them slowly improving. I just hope my ticker doesn’t give out before we take the title away from that group in Columbus, OH.

  4. I know everyone wants to hype the offense after this week and Kentucky. But I don’t remember anyone ever bragging about a Lane Kiffin defense.

      • Ole Miss spent NIL on the defenseive front 7 last year. I’m not sure if those players are still there or they just are not getting the results. They were 14th in the SEC in rush D before the UGA game.

Bobo did a great job last week. It isn’t easy to score on every drive against any SEC D. He has had some great days as OC.

However, I’m not going to be praising the offense as turned around or the OL as the best in the past 3-4 years off of the past 2 games. If the OL blocks Cash converts against Bama. Bobo offenses have struggled in 3rd conversions in the past. Is the problem fixed, were the opposing defenses that bad, or the chess match of Jimmies and their scheme vs Joes and their scheme in favor of Bobo’s offense? I don’t know.

I like the progess but as someone that has been critical of Bobo and Searels I’m not changing to a forecast of sunny skies and rainbows. Who knows this team could catch fire like the ’07 team. Whatever struggles *both* sides of the ball have had, UGA is still positioned to be in the playoff and in the running for a SECCG.

  5. The offense looked great on Saturday but I am not prepared to do an Irish jig until they show some consistency from 1st to 4th quarter. Call it battered wife syndrome I guess. Bring me flowers only to slap my ass later that night.

  6. Some of these “fans” will never change their minds. Theyre validated because it seems as if they are the ones that identified the problem and things improve because of their repeated internet criticism.

    • I’m reminded of:

“Kirby doesn’t get it. Will never win a championship at Georgia.”

      • Now you are just flat out making bullshit up. Other than 2016, I cannot remember ever seeing comments here said something THAT negative about Kirby. At worst folks might complain about questionable play calls like the famous fake punt in the SEC championship. No, he got us an inch from the title in year two, and we have all been 100% on team Kirby since. Coordinators on the other hand have always been up for debate. This is a message board not North Korea.

  7. I’m not a Bobo or Searels defender or advocate. I see a team this year that is running the ball with authority (other than the Auburn game – may be the best defense we see this year). The line looked great on Saturday.

If the offense continues to improve and the defense starts to play to its talent potential, they will be a tough out in January.

    • Just think how much better the running attack will get when Nate gets his full confidence back! He (rightfully so) is still concerned will ball control which I think is hindering him just a little. Runs that are going for 3-5 yards have the potential to be big gainers.

  8. I think you can both criticize and praise both coaches for what we’ve seen over the years at times. I will say I’m pleasantly surprised with the way Searels has dealt with the ridiculous number of injuries on the OL this year and identified and developed the young guys that can play. And although I’ve never been a Bobo “hater,” he has upped his play design game and I love it.

  9. Better players, playing better football makes coaches look like they know what they’re doing.

Bobo’s issues have never been about game planning or positional coaching or play calling.

He occasionally makes a dumb decision. Examples include:

Naked bootleg pass on first and goal.

Reverse with a blind pitch in the shadow of our end zone.

Kirby has a list as well.

Now Schumann is eating shit. The defense doesn’t have All-NFL personnel for the entire two deep and all of a sudden he forgot what a football is…

Its all the vomitus of subject matter eejits.

I’m more worried about how they can shore up the pass defense for the second half/postseason and how we can get Noah Thomas more involved. Injuries are slowly cutting into our capacity to take advantage of Gunner’s greatest strength: throwing the deep ball.

  10. I’m what many would call a “Bobo defender” or “sunshine pumper” (or worse), but even I’m going to say, “let’s not get *too* carried away here guys”. Other than one trick play that got blown up, Bobo had a fantastic day. And if Dillon Bell doesn’t catch that deep shot on 2nd & 12 late in the game, a lot of us would’ve been screaming, “run the dang ball, Bobo!” It was a great offensive performance all around. When all 11 players on the field are playing lights out, it makes all the play calls look brilliant.

Now that they’ve shown what they’re capable of, I’m hoping the offensive players will have even greater confidence moving forward. As others have noted, there are tougher defenses than Ole Miss on the horizon, especially if we hope to make a deep playoff run.

And I know I’m not the first to ever say this, but Bobo needs to coach like we’re two scores down in an offensive shootout all the time. There’s just something different about how the offense plays when we’re in full-on attack mode.

    • Is “EastAsia State” a euphemism for “Georgia fans born before 1970 and after 2000? Obviously this is a pretty broad generalization, but it seems to me that most of us who are in Mike’s age range (he and Kirby are just a few years older than me) are more likely to give him the benefit of the doubt than the old or young – 79Dawg

  11. Anything less than winning every game while covering the spread is not enough for some fans. If Bobo had the offensive weapons that Monken had while having the same defenses he was gifted I doubt the results would be less. Monken is not very popular at his current job. I also wonder if some of the past stubbornness to run into a wall is requested by Kirby wanting to out physical the opposition.

Now on Stacy Searles my opinion is changing this season. Maybe when forced by injuries to work harder. Or that there’s much better balanced talent in the RB room this season. Having WR’s that can catch also helps the running game.

No question the offense is carrying this team right now. Hopefully they stay healthy and the defense gets better. Be nice to get into the playoffs right as the team reaches its peak. Like the two loss tOSU did last season.

  12. We as fans rarely know shit about how the sausage is made. Even if we generally understand the process behind it – and most fans don’t know that either – we’re not in practice or in the locker room or at coaches’ meetings. We almost entirely react to individual player performances on game day – which are much easier to assess – and then draw conclusions based on what we see at that time. The end result IS most important but “Coach is an idiot!” “Fire e’erbody!” “Give Jon Gruden whatever he wants!” aren’t necessarily fair assessments of what’s really going on.

Except in the case of Willie Martinez. That guy really was a terrible DC.

    • I once saw Kevin Ramsey do less with more…

Over time you can judge a coach by results and by talent acquisition, but as Belichick’s example has shown, sometimes we put far too much blame/credit on coaching and not enough of each onto players.

“You can’t make chicken salad out of chicken shit.”

      – Paul “Bear” Bryant

      • Derek,
Kevin Ramsey was the worst alleged DC in my lifetime at UGA. That is another thing most who survived his time here would probably agree on.

Remember the Auburn nightmare game where he was fired at halftime? Felt like it was 50-0 at the half. I don’t ever remember another coordinator losing his job at halftime.

    • Totally agree on 3rd and Willie being a horrible DC.

Willie Martinez is still working his magic. He’s the DB coach for the hillbillies.

  13. I mentioned to 0331 in a comment a while back that I’d had a Zen moment:

I’m a fan. They are Coaches. The dynamic of this relationship is that I can bitch, blame, and ridicule when I perceive they disappoint me. I can cheer them when I think they do well. On their end they can continue to not give a rat’s ass what I think because football is all they’ve ever done, They’ve forgotten more about the sport than I will ever know and since I’m not a substantial donor I can fuck right the fuck off.

I like it this way. We’re cool.

    • That appears to be a healthy outlook.

Once you cross a line into:

      – smug criticism that suggests that you’re the real football mind around here because you listened to a tv broadcaster’s bullshit and that your absence from the coaches booth is a damn shame and costing us games,

      OR
      – I’m entitled to more because I care so very much!!!

      OR
      – I hope we lose this week so I can get what I want!!!

Well then, as far as I am concerned, you can fuck right the fuck off.

We’re fans. We don’t know shit. We’re not entitled to shit. And, as fans, we want to win this week even if our coach is 0 and 50 and his IQ lies somewhere in between.

Now let’s go beat the snot out of whatever Billy Hogtown happens to throw out there next week.

I hope Kirby is giving them a memorable Bloody Tuesday today. This is no time to stand still. We’ll probably be a td or more favorite the way in but we can’t stop progressing to that unstoppable machine I think we can eventually become.

      • Can’t let it go can you? Always have to be right and have the last word because you are the chess grand master and all of us checker players should just shut up and listen to our betters (you apparently).

        • Bobo’s great as long as he keeps following my advice. Who is Searls? Nevermind. It’s Schumann who needs all my input now.

          /j <<<<<<< 🤣

          • Opinions are like assholes. We all have ’em. I may disagree with you, but I’m not going to call someone an idiot because we differ. If we didn’t have opinions and then opine, there would be no need for this or any other board.

Bobo-never been a Bobo hater. Would I rather have Monken? Sure, but he’s not available. Bobo’s numbers over the years stack up to most of the top-level coordinators. He ain’t flashy but he’s solid and he wins.
Searls-still not sold but he has had a much tougher job this year with all the injuries.
Schumann- this should give us all pause
“Georgia is 128th in the country in sack percentage at 2.39%. Shockingly, that is the lowest sack percentage of any power conference team in the nation”. When we are behind UCLA, UCF, UNC and Stanford. We have a problem.

        • You can always tell the arrogant know-it-all as he’ll be the one deferring complex decision-making to the experts.

Meanwhile, the humble amongst us will compose the sorts of utterances which inspired identifying what is now known as the dunning-kruger effect.

      • I don’t see anyone hoping we lose and I don’t see anyone paying to care what you think either.

        • Oh, its been done. A guy at the old place said explicitly that he hoped we would lose to Florida so Richt would get fired.

chilidawg or something was his name. I got in his ass for a couple of years over that.

          Do y’all not have memories?

    • Amen Unclr Got. This is America, we are allowed to talk shit about people.

  14. I believe it is a combination of factors, but a big part is team chemistry on offense. I believe the team is better with Stockton than Beck. They want to play for Stockton

  15. Not many Bobo Haters will change their minds no matter what the offense does. As mentioned above, Bobo has some moments that a good portion of the fanbase can’t get over. He is responsible for the highest scoring offense in UGA history and gets a lot of undeserved hate in my opinion. Is he the best OC in college football? No. But, he is one of the better ones in my opinion.

The Haters act like Monken never had games our situations that were not good performances and gloss over that he had the best roster in the history of the program behind him. But, they also like to dismiss Bobo success by stating he had players like Gurley. Monken had the greatest defense in program history to back him up and Bobo usually had bad defenses to compensate for. For me, Monken and Bobo are about equal.

    • I agree. Monken had Stetson, Bowers, McConkey, Mims, Jones, probably 15 other NFL guys and those defenses.
Bobo has some head scratchers that is for sure. But in this latest incarnation I think he has done really well. Last year we could not run, could not catch and had a QB who was prone to throwing picks. To win the SEC Championship (which is 98% as important as a National Championship to me- person who became a Dawgs fan in 1991) with that group was a hell of an accomplishment. To say nothing of the credit he built with me coaching Joe Cox, Hutson Mason, and to a lesser degree Matt Stafford (go watch his bad games and tell me you knew he would play in the NFL for almost 20 years) to success means something as far as game to game and play to play results.
I also fucking love Stockton. I am always dubious about the feel good story but man he looks the part and seems to be as a QB one of the toughest players on the team. Couple that with his no doubt ability and you have something that will be a lot of fun to watch this season and beyond.

    • A lot of Ravens fans complain about Monken the way a lot of UGA fans complain about Bobo – or even Schitty. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      • And Schitty’s team is leading the nfc in scoring.

What a dumbass that guy is?!?!

I bet he couldn’t do that with Greyson Lambert….oh, wait…huh?

    • I don’t know how to log in, so I’m not trying to leave a snarkily anonymous comment here. My genuine questions is: who would you rather have??? Look around college football, and name someone that’s available that would do better? I’ll give you Buster Faulkner. Potentially.

      • Faulkner has averaged 32 pts and 30 pts per game at Tech the past two seasons. I’m not saying he is bad, but he gets a TON of mileage out of the Georgia game last year. Bobo averaged 40 pts and and 31.5 pts the same two seasons and I would offer that Bobo is facing better defenses in the SEC than the ACC, but I don’t have numbers to back that up. Just a guess. I think if Faulkner was at Georgia that fans would not be happy with his offense.

        • That’s fair. I admit my inclusion of Faulkner was largely narrative driven, and as an attempt to not sound like a smug smart ass who wasn’t willing to at least consider other options. Personally, I have been converted from a Bobo skeptic to an admirer, hence my honest question… who would Dawg fans legitimately prefer, assuming the Saturday afternoon armchair OCs that leave those sorts of comment are unavailable to take the position themselves.

      • > who would you rather have???

One of the most absurd questions people ask.

It isn’t my job to know who the next up and coming elite genius OC is. That’s Kirby’s job to find and diagnose.

Just like Saban diagnosed Kirby, and rode his brilliant defensive mind to a legacy of titles.

        • I don’t get your stance on why is that an absurd question? That seems like a cop out or lazy. I know Coach X is bad, but I can’t identify who a good alternative would be or Coach C or D who have been successful for other teams?

          • I should be more clear:

It is an absurd question when used to justify keeping an underperforming coach.

            That’s the AD/HC’s job.

Just like I don’t waste my life following HS recruiting, I don’t waste my live analyzing random OCs and assistants across obscure programs I don’t care about.

    • Well, if you’re going to say that, tell us who is better, and why. Be sure to show your work.

      • Nah, that’s the AD/HC’s job.

Just like I don’t waste my life following HS recruiting, I don’t waste my live analyzing random OCs and assistants across obscure programs I don’t care about.

  16. Cole Cubelic (former OL player at Auburn) LOVES the play of our OL and often features them on his Block Party segment. From section HD it’s hard to tell what we do right or what we do wrong because the angle obscures much of the play and also because in live action it can be hard to see everything at once. Often we only know and love or hate the result. This year, our OL is getting featured on screen by folks with knowledge and the equipment to explain it. I love it. “Two grass seeds” made me laugh.

  17. Bobo is much better. His creativity and use of formations to get guys open is impressive. I cannot believe I typed that. He did have one classic bobo call ( rb pass in the red zone) to remind me how bad he was for a decade or so.

OL with Greene and Freeling heathy is good. Last year they couldn’t stay on the field and we had no true tackles.

    Now about the defense…….

    • Seems like that side of the ball is likely to be an adventure all season.

Its obvious we don’t have an edge rusher….

None of the front four can regularly pressure the qb.

What we can improve on is tackling. If we can do that and make folks kick fgs, we’ll be ok.

  18. Totally off topic but apparently Sgt. Carter is being talked about as the new Florida coach if Freshwater and Marcus Freeman both turn them down. Dear Lord Jesus please let this happen.

    • Booch beat Kirby as many times as the laner done!

Its pretty funny that 20 years ago Urban turned down ND for UF and NO ONE thinks the current ND coach would make the same choice.

UF’s problem is that their expectations are too far out of whack with reality. Any coach out there needs to know that the fan base thinks they’re Alabama.

      Maybe even more than Alabama.

Than ran off SOS and Urban. Who wants THAT job?

      Booch prolly.

      • In this day and age who wouldn’t want that job (or any other one for that matter)? Napier just got $21 million for getting fired.

        • If you don’t have one of them? Absolutely.

If you’re at Ole Miss or ND and already have one of those jobs…why?

I just think its one of the least desirable jobs in college football right now. Tennessee isn’t far behind because of the lack of immediate access to talent.

  19. I’m happy enough with Bobo…outside of the couple of times he’s run cute plays when it wasn’t necessary..but no one is perfect and he’s doing an overall great job.
But if we had to replace him, I’d take a long look at Navy’s Drew Cronic.

  20. I’ve been a Bobo & Searles critic going back to the Richt days. I have been pleased with alot of what I’m seeing the last few weeks from both. I love a power run game that’s not getting stuffed between the tackles consistently & that has been much better this year. I’m honestly surprised that it’s the defense where my concern is this season. I’m still waiting to see Bobo come out attacking from the start when 1) we’re playing a team with a pulse & 2) when he’s not forced into it by our defenses inability to get a stop.

    • We did attack early and often this week.

Gunner being as sharp early as he is late would help a bunch.

      • Yes we did, see point 2 above. Aggressive Bobo is good Bobo. Just keep doing it even if you don’t have to. Of course, with this defense that may not be an option.

  21. There is nothing Searels can do to ever win me to his side. I am and will always be a Bobo supporter. CMB’s offenses took off AFTER CSS left UGA. I firmly believe that an offense’s rushing success is tied to the OL coaching. (see Jim Chaney running our offense with the Pittboss as our OL coach).

As for this year, a few things to remember. One, Gunner is our 3rd leading rusher. That is the highest a QB has been in rush yards in the Smart era. This makes the OL look much better than it is.

This has improved UGA’s rushing statistics to bring it up to 7th in YPR in the conference against conference opponents. However, the defense’s we have played in a YPP rush defense are Auburn at 2, Tennessee at 6th, UK at 9th, OleMiss at 14th and Alabama at 15th. With Auburn we barely out rushed what they give up.

All I can say is that CMB is dialing up some plays that are scheming guys open on the passes and for the most part are setting up the running game to find opportunities for success. For everyone who complains about the bubble screens, tunnel screens or RB flares, why do we have to call those “extension to the running plays” rather than normal running plays? Just a thought.
