The fly is open – Austin Peay preview

YouTube is amazing. That is all.

Later today, our Dawgs take on the Austin Peay Governors between the hedges in the final tune-up prior to the gauntlet of the SEC schedule gets started next weekend in Ob-Knoxville. Similar to last week, the outcome is not in question. The Dawgs are going to win and win convincingly. What is different is that the Governors as an FCS program may be better than last week’s FBS opponent. Today’s preview focuses on some guys I hope get an opportunity to make plays later.

When Georgia has the ball

I want to see the two hyped freshman wide receivers (CJ WIley and Talyn Taylor) get a chance to show us what they can do with the ball in their hands. Both played last week, and Taylor showed out on special teams as a gunner along with KJ Bolden in punt coverage. If the game goes to form, I expect to see these guys get some 2nd team reps while Gunner Stockton is still in the game.

The other thing I hope to see when the Dawgs are on offense is getting Dillon Bell off to a good start. Bell was quiet last Saturday, and we’ll need him to play big next week at Kneeland due to his experience and performance in past big games.

When Austin Peay has the ball

The man-child Elijah Griffin made some plays in last week’s game while rotating in with the 1st team defense. Tomorrow would be a great opportunity for him to show why he was the #1 defensive tackle recruit in the country. I don’t expect the Governors to try to stand in the pocket and throw the ball down the field. Therefore, I don’t expect there to be many sack opportunities, but I would like to see him show he can push the pocket in the middle to prevent a QB from stepping up or being able to pull the ball down to get up field to avoid the rush. Once again, I expect that we are going to need the young elite defensive lineman to be ready for play next week in Knoxville.

What will happen

If last week is any indication, I expect another fast start. A double digit lead at the end of the 1st quarter would be a good measuring stick for Saturday afternoon. After that, I expect we’ll see Gunner Stockton and the first team offensive rotation through the first offensive possession of the 3rd quarter. After that, I expect Kirby will empty the bench with anyone healthy who is wearing a red jersey getting a chance to play in front of a Sanford Stadium crowd that will be steadily emptying. Don’t be surprised if the 4th quarter ends up with a 12-minute running clock, so the Governors can deposit their check on the way out of town.

Final score: Georgia 48, Austin Peay 10

I've been a Dawg my entire life. UGA was always my dream school where I received 2 Terry College degrees and met my DGD wife. I've been a season ticket holder for over 30 years and love the in-stadium experience over anything from Section HD. My first game in Sanford Stadium was the 1981 Auburn game where we clinched the SEC championship. The best game I've attended in person was the Midnight Miss against Ohio State (nite, nite!). The best home games I've attended were the 1984 Clemson game (the Butler did it) and the 2013 LSU game (that 4th down is still the loudest single moment I've experienced between the hedges). The game I love to win is against the Handbags (FTMF), and the game I hate to lose is the NATS (Tuck Fech).

  1. GATA Dawgs and come away healthy. Then focus on beating the crap out of 10-R-C.

    HBTFD

  2. Yep, get out of here healthy and get ready to whip the butt chuggers next week.

Dawgs don’t cover again but win easily.
