One Call, That’s All

Kirby’s wish has been answered.

“Every time we come in here, we talk about December is absolutely crazy,” Smart said. “Now, let’s call it January, because hypothetically the portal opened in December, we’re leaning toward that thing opening in January and you get a little more stability in December in terms of let’s sign our high school recruits first, then let’s figure out in January where the semester break ends, who’s staying, and who’s going. So we compartmentalize. Let’s deal with this issue now.”

Maybe the timing isn’t right, since it’s still in January, but at least there won’t be the drain after spring camp where players unhappy with the hypothetical two-deep chart at camp’s end.

It feels that there’s so many changes and nuances to the game now, we can just anticipate wholesale shifts in program impacts every year for the foreseeable future. New normal doesn’t still feel quite normal yet, does it?

  1. This will only last until the first lawsuit, and then the courts will overturn it and probably open it up even further. Eventually the portal will be open 365 days a year, and we’ll get to witness someone leaving their team on a Sunday after not getting to start and playing for a different team the following Saturday.

    • I predicted long ago (on GTP) that eventually a player will leave his team at halftime and play for the opposing team during the second half. Hyperbole? yeah..but we’re closer to that than we were the way things were in the not too distant past.

      • Too bad Bear Alexander will be out of eligibility by the time this happens. He seems like the most likely candidate for this.

    • Since you know anti-trust law, and you are aware this restriction on players movement is not a per se violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act I want to know why you assert this restriction violates the Rule of Reason.

  2. This will ultimately end with a collective bargaining agreement. In other words, NFL-Lite.

  3. “New normal doesn’t still feel quite normal yet, does it?”

No, but viewership was up (insanely, btw) one week in so expect CFB to become more bland than a new and improved Cracker Barrel logo to appeal to the masses.

  4. Nope. We are seeing the first nail in the coffin of unrestricted free agency and I for one and happy about it.

  5. Well the recruiting services have got be taking a beating. Most fans DGAS about recruiting when you don’t know who will be on the field for the first game of the year until the roster is posted. Hell if it goes to a truly unrestricted free agency we want know whose on the field until we have the game day program.

  6. Does this mean we can go back to normal spring games?

Or even better playing actual games against teams. I would love to see Georgia play Clemson every spring home and home.

  7. I’m trying to do the ‘deliberating’ thing here. I realize there has to be a transfer window, but I also think that sooner or later there has to be some legal regard for contract and commitment (yeah I know we’re talking about young football players and their stage parents) and an opportunity for roster stability.
Even ten million dollar coaches deserve an occasional break.
Meanwhile, J.T. Daniels gives it a California shrug.

    • He careful what you wish for, Hogbody. That “regard for contract and commitment” would apply to the schools being required to honor roster sports for under performing players. Kirby wouldn’t have as many spots to honor recruits.
