Slow Sunday Sidebar: Georgia is Cursed

Georgia professor debates that Georgia is once again cursed, and it’ll be 2062 before we see another National Championship.

From Knox’s bio:

I study the wind: why it blows, where it blows, what it blows around, and how to protect people from it.  This subject is called atmospheric dynamics…

As the wind blows…maybe he knows something the rest of us don’t.

So it’s a bit of two parter debate here…on one side, the “what we don’t know” stemming from the deaths of a Georgia player and staffer after the 2022 Championship celebration is cause for a karmic ban from success for another 37 years. On the other, is the odd take that Kirby missed on Fernando Mendoza and can’t handle the NIL era.

I’m not arguing that there was some shady stuff surrounding the drunk driving incident, so that’s not the point of this.

But if you’re going to get moved by a story from Mendoza that somehow Kirby was sleeping on the job and “that made all the difference” then you’re a bit touched. Mendoza made some spectacular plays in Indiana’s championship run, but you could’ve slid Beck or Stockton into that roster of semi-pros and likely had the same result.

Hell, that’s the commoner’s take on Stetson Bennett, right? Didn’t matter who was under center, it was an All-Pro team and we couldn’t lose? Sheesh.

No, the greater thing I have at issue here is that a person who has three letters after his name and is clearly a person who does research and studies would actually be under the impression that Kirby would’ve started ANYBODY other than Gunner last year. You really think Mendoza had that much of an upside over Stockton where Kirby would’ve broken his traditional commitment to the veteran, Doc?

If further research is required, please look up Justin Fields. Beck and Van der Griff experienced the same.

Anyway, what’s your Sunday take on the professor’s thoughts?

    • Letters after a name don’t mean shit. I’ve met a lot of dumb lawyers and a few dumb doctors in my life, so professors? Yeah, pretty sure there are plenty of dumb ones in that field too. Methinks someone just wanted to pontificate into the ether and get a reaction.

  1. I saw this yesterday and almost created a post. You did more justice to it than I could have. Excellent work.

Knox is getting what he wanted … 15:00 of online viral fame. I’m guessing the Brooks and UGAAA hatchet job on the guy who wrote the poorly researched article on the program in the AJC is at the root of it.

The story about Mendoza is so old now (I’m guessing he just discovered it), and I don’t think Kirby has ever been asked to respond to it. Who cares?

I’m guessing Knox will be on a short list with the provost and President Morehead for the next tenure or full professor promotion discussion to make sure he pays some penance for this drivel. Whatever ax he is trying grind almost 4 years later is long gone.

Stick to chasing the wind, Knox. A man a lot more wise than you wrote about how useful that is.

    • Mendoza brought it up again this week during some sort of roundtable podcast and it made news. Like I’ve said before, this has been the slowest and deadest offseason since I started writing regularly around here. It’s a Nothingburger in my opinion, but I don’t study the wind. Just blowhards.

  2. BREAKING: A professor who hates the football team…. Next up on the news tonight, a man was bitten by a dog….

  3. He probably just got his season tickets and pissed over where they moved him 😏

  4. Prof,

I learned everything I know about karma and football curses from two-time National Championship DC Jerry Sandusky.

Anyone who buys into any sort of cosmic justice bullshit or in “magic” is a fucktard.

  5. I was staunchly against replacing professors with AI until this guy came along…

    • Hey, I dated karma for a while, what a bitch…she did have some nice attributes, though…..

  6. This is the kind of conversation you hear at a tailgate from a friend of a friend who shows up and wants to be the center of attention. Then, when he leaves, everyone rolls their eyes and agrees not to invite that guy again.

Instead, he’s on social media where the incentive to be an attention whore rewards these people with traffic because people can’t help themselves.

Delete your accounts, folks. Don’t give this stuff oxygen.

  7. I was going to comment about the video (thinking it was a replay from his time at Indiana), “What did he throw the ball to himself and run it 80 yards for a touchdown?” – meaning, he had quite the supporting cast around him at IU. Then I watched the video and laughed hard. Well played, JP!

  8. In regards to Prof Knox, I don’t think the wind is the only thing that blows.

  9. Late to the insult party but need to add on. Overpaid, over valued academic studying how a butterfly in India creates a hurricane in the Gulf. Doesn’t get the taxpayer grants he wants to travel the world and seethes at the money college football generates. Karma? Seriously? Is that what he has astutely divined from his rigorous research as to how wind affects the planet? Crawl back in the basement prof. If you’ve got proof of wrongdoing in the program step up and be the next Jan Kemp otherwise STFU.
