Sit Down, Mike, I’ve Got This

Akron Football, doing what so many Georgia fans can only dream of.

So I kind of posted this last year, but what would you draw up for the opening drive?

Me, I’d go with some classics…here’s mine.

First and Ten from the Tennessee State 25:

Hartley Left 24 RPO 87 Lookie

With Elyiss Williams at Split End, Barbour in the Slot, and Luckie in tight, I run a tricky little RPO faking to Nate Frazier with Reddell faking the reverse, just to dump it to Luckie running a skinny corner route or hitting a streaking Williams down the left side. If we have all these tight ends, we damn well ought to use them. Likely outcome, screen pass check down to Frazier for a first down, I’d hope.

1st and 10, Tennessee State 40

Hartley Trips Right, Bubble Fake Go

Barbour has some tremendous ups and length, so I’d immediately stretch the field and hit Barbour deep just to demonstrate we can, in fact, throw the ball deep. Again, there’s Williams on the left side. Find him, feed him, if you can.

Likely outcome…we throw the bubble screen and Reddell is tackled for a loss. But a boy can hope.

First and 10, Georgia 35

Hartley Trips Right, 2814 Wheel

No, I haven’t called in the receivers. Why would I? There’s probably ten tight end recruits sitting in the stands, they need to see they’ll be featured, right? Just as the defense starts keying on Barbour, Luckie, and Williams, Frazier sneaks out of the backfield and down the left sideline on a wheel route. Bingo, good luck to the left side of the defensive formation.

First and Goal, Georgia 3 yard line

Hartley Spread, 26 Counter

I keep the star tight ends on the field, and in true Georgia OC fashion, I run out Jay Lamar, true freshman running back, to run a counter for a two yard loss.

2nd and Goal, Georgia 5 Yard Line

Hartley Tight, Twins Right, 821 Max

Swing Gunner around behind a diving Chauncey Bowens and look for an open tight end in the endzone. Pass incomplete.

3rd and Goal, Georgia 5 Yard Line

Hartley Tight Power Right Iso Weak

Bring Luckie in motion to the left and have him and Reddell try to lead block to the left side while Bowens frantically tries to dive for more yardage. Williams kicks out the end and Bowens grabs a couple yards.

4th and Goal, Georgia 3 Yard Line

Fake Field Goal, 1221 Bingo

Tight ends crossing and heading to the flats, receivers everywhere. Probably pass incomplete.

Alternative play: fake punt featuring Hezekiah Millender.

So how’s about you…what would be your play calls on the opening possession, if you had the chance?

  1. Punt on 1st down, have Special Teams recover a opposition fumble and score the opening season TD…UGA football 7- tenn st. 0….GO DAWGS!!

  2. Miss deep, bubble screen stuffed, draw play with smallest back on the roster, punt. Oh wait…I was reading Bobo’ chart. Me? I’m using 13 personnel in RPO all the way down the field letting Gunner do his thing.

  3. Student body right. Student body left. Lather, rinse repeat until paydirt.

  4. “ If we have all these tight ends, we damn well ought to use them.”

Absolutely. They can block some, but so can running backs and traditional receivers. If you have the hands and the speed it doesn’t matter to me how big you are. Give the opponents linebackers something to think about.

  5. Run it up the middle until they stop it. And if they stop it, keep doing it anyway.

  6. Screen passes until it 4th down cause apparently that’s what the greatest OC in the world that got runner up to a meaningless award would do.
