Paint it (red &) black – Tennessee preview

Later this afternoon, the Dawgs take on Tennessee on the banks of the river in what is likely the last annual game the 2 programs will play. We would like to extend a streak of dominance to 9 games while the other side would like to throw the goal posts into that river (similar to toilet paper, that just seems dumb, but then again, who are we talking about).

Let’s get to the preview.

When Georgia has the ball

The question for today is how will Gunner Stockton handle his first true road start. Can he conjure up a game like David Greene did in a similar situation in 2001? Stockton admits he didn’t have a lot of confidence last week (I don’t understand that at all against a team of guys who all who likely be walk-ons at best). While I don’t believe Stockton has to win the game, he can’t be the reason the Dawgs lose.

Can he play within the offense and pass for 250 yards and earn another 40-50 on the ground without making the backbreaking turnover? If so, I think there will be a lot of people in red & black who are happy.

By the way, it looks like Earnest Greene will play, and it’s possible Juan Gaston could be available.

When Tennessee has the ball

Tennessee is going to try to test a Georgia secondary that hasn’t really been tested through 2 games. In particular, I’m guessing they are going to test whoever plays opposite Daylen Everette and the star (Aguero or others). The real key to stopping the Bobby Hill offense is to stop the run without committing safeties to help with the run game. Also, do t be surprised if we see more designed QB run than we have seen from Tennessee recently.

Tackling in space … do it well, Dawgs.

What will happen

I don’t think this game is going to go like others have in Knoxville where the orange and white fans vacate the erector set in the 3rd quarter, and the Dawgs fans move into those seats to give the Dawgs extra support. This game is going into the 4th with the game in doubt.

Defense travels … Dawgs get it done with complementary football.

Final score: Georgia 31, Tennessee 24

I've been a Dawg my entire life. UGA was always my dream school where I received 2 Terry College degrees and met my DGD wife. I've been a season ticket holder for over 30 years and love the in-stadium experience over anything from Section HD. My first game in Sanford Stadium was the 1981 Auburn game where we clinched the SEC championship. The best game I've attended in person was the Midnight Miss against Ohio State (nite, nite!). The best home games I've attended were the 1984 Clemson game (the Butler did it) and the 2013 LSU game (that 4th down is still the loudest single moment I've experienced between the hedges). The game I love to win is against the Handbags (FTMF), and the game I hate to lose is the NATS (Tuck Fech).

  1. Do we really think Juan finna play? I just hope whomever does play can stay healthy. Kneeland just always scares me.

    • You and me both. While I expect to win (ugly but win) a loss does not end the season. That cow pasture of a field taking out a key piece on either side of the ball could potentially have a more lasting effect on the season.

  2. I think we go down early with some offensive 3 & outs and our D struggling with their no huddle wide spread offense. Kirby gets the D adjusted at the half, Gunner starts finding downfield targets and we finally get into the 4th close to ultimately seal the deal. Have the Pepto ready but Dawgs win.

    • I have the feeling that Pepcid, Pepto, TUMS, and bourbon are going to be needed in bulk this season.

  3. I missed where Gunner said he lacked confidence last week. When the team leader lacks confidence, that seems concerning. Especially one who’s been here as long as Stockton.

  4. Not sure if this is an omen, but when I did the Spelling Bee in the NYT today I tried ‘Bobo’ but it wasn’t in the word list. Also, if it is an omen, is it a good omen or a bad one?

    • But booboo was, many of which the defense will hand out today. And so was bonbon, many of which the Tenn coach will eat in sadness after we win.

  5. Definitely think the keys to the win are Georgia’s key traits – toughness, composure, connection and resiliency. I do think all the injuries in key spots for Tennessee make for a great opportunity for the offense to eat today. Would like to see us grind them down with the run game and hit some shots out wide. Thinking Young, Branch and Luckie shine, the front 7 plays well and the Dawgs win it 27-20.
