The Happy Warrior.
Legend.
Give me 22 Hines Wards and I rule the world!!
Damn shame he hit campus at the absolute nadir of the football program.
I gotta admit: when Hines crackbacked a fool to spring Robert Edward for a TD vs So Car and started dancing, I just knew a flag was coming. BUT NO!
One of my all time Favorites to wear the G!
#StopGoffingAround&GiveTheBalltoHHHIIINNEESSS!
A frequent cheer of my Tailgate Crew back then, lol
My wife and I were in a grocery store in Sandy Springs a few years ago and saw Hines in another check out line. Then we noticed a man in his 30s pointing at Hines and stammering “your ___” repeatedly. The guy was almost shaking and Hines’s patented grin grew bigger and bigger. Finally Hines graciously said yes I am, shook the guy’s hand, and walked on without ever telling the guy his name. I was groceries and a show.
Guy played 3 positions and did well at all 3 not counting special teams. The 1995 tech win was my favorite after 17 starters were down with injuries. Ok maybe not 17 but it seemed like that many.
Heck Yeah! That 95 Tech win was for the Dawgs, Merica and Christendom!
It was as bad as you remembered…looking it up, I found the following:
Derrick Byrd, DE – injured in 1995 spring practice
Robert Edwards – breaks foot in game 2
Mike Bobo – knee destroyed in Oxford
Brian Smith – filled in three games, then got injured
Larrie Bowie – pulled groin in Alabama game
Torin Kirtsey – sprained an ankle
Odell Collins – pulled a hamstring while doing laundry (no lie)
Randall Godfrey – strained hamstring and was hampered the rest of the season
Travis Stroud – hyperextended elbow in game three, limited rest of the season
Ward started game three of the year as a scatback filling in for Edwards but sustained bruised ribs and legs, started at QB against Alabama, where we lost 31-0 (last shutout in Dawg football history), then had to come in against Florida in that debacle in Gainesville, aggravated a fractured write, and played with a broken bone in his wrist for the final two games, which included a near upset of Auburn and the win against Tech.
I’ll be capturing this for my Rumble channel.
Great find! Thanks for the heads up. DVR set to record.
tried to come out of the Tech game late in fourth quarter after hurting his hand again, the coaches waved for him to go back because the only qb. left was a true freshman they wanted to red shirt!
One of the great mysteries of Hines is why Kirby doesn’t hire him? He is at Arizona State coaching receivers, what is up with Kirby and Hines? Did Hines hurt his feeling or something? Hines Pro career was amazing, he had DB’s afraid for their lives. His blocking down field was legendary.
