Musical Palate Cleanser, oh you Herschel Walker edition

Herschel Walker born this day in 1962 turns… 62 today.

I believe this was his greatest hit:

Also born today in 1966 was Anthony Terrell Smith.

Yeah, we know him better as Tone Loc.

And, best for last… today in 1956 Elvis Presley hit the top 10 for the first time with:

Thank you. Thank you very much.

What’s playing in your world today?

  1. I imagine that Bill Bates’ grandchildren feel that hit every time we watch that video. Never gets old!

    • I like how Bill Bates always owned it. He got steamrolled by the best, right there at the breakout moment. Kinda shared that moment, but all respect to HW. Happy Birthday, 34.

    • The long run against South Carolina. No one had seen a man that big run that fast at that time. Many times we don’t think players would have been successful in future generations. Herschel and Bo would be just as scary now as they were then.

Can you imagine Herschel taking a wildcat snap now?

      • When Herschel outran geometry! I think that was my favorite of all his amazing runs although the long ones against the ‘turds are right up there.

      • The only game Herschel played in that I did not see in person, was that Tenn. game. I missed seeing that run but I never missed another.
Also, in the SC game, get the picture, 2 DB’s were standing at midfield and Mr. Walker was 40 yards away on the right going 100 miles an hour. Both DB”s had the angel on him but the collision would have taken place somewhere in the parking lot past the bridge. Mr. Walker was not running, he was flying.

        • Speaking of running fast, Amarius Mims at 6-7, 340 with a 5.07 at the combine. That’s a Mack truck coming at you if you’re a DB.

  2. I’ll be getting in some truck time, so I’ll chase Frozendawg down yesterday’s MPC.

    • I was lucky enough to be there. If you saw it live, no explanation is needed.if you didn’t, no explanation is possible. Herschel was an immutable property of the universe, like gravity. You could try to understand him,you could try to explain how he functioned, but mostly you were overwhelmed by how relentlessly he affected everything. Younger Bulldogs have no idea how inexorable he was.

      • People are trying to give the title of Bulldog GOAT to Brock. 19 is a great player … possibly the greatest to play his position at the college level. Herschel was and is otherworldly.

        • There exists in the minds of many a sec defender during 1980-1982 that three things were true….#34 was faster than a speeding bullet!…#34 was more powerful than a locomotive!…#34 could and did leap tall buildings with a single bound!…#34 was the only candidate for the Heisman Trophy in 1980!!…when on national tv, it was better for your career to fall at the sight of #34 than for #34 to embarrass your ass live and then again, with instant replay…!!…and finally, that one non conference defender that never recovered from the attempted tackle of #34 thighs, only to ask the question “who was that coming down the track”?…these three items are true through living testimony…#34 is the standard at UGA football!!…GO DAWGS!!

          • My bad, 1942 UGA football deals FU 75-0 with Frank Sinkwich and Charlie Trippi, have no memory of 1942, those two were/are UGA football immortals…GO DAWGS!!

        • to me, Brock is like Jake Scott, or Champ Bailey, or a handful of others. He was a tremendous player for us, and he will be a 10 year All Pro if his health stays good. But I’ve never seen anyone change the game weekly for 3 years the way #34 did.

I first stumbled across UGA football in the Jake Scott era, when I was a kid. There have been many, many great UGA players since then. Who you think was the most transformative, most dominant, most irreplaceable, etc was is a matter of opinion, Of the guys I have seen play, HW was The Guy. BB has 2 NCs though, as do all the members of that run. If you like someone else, I cant say you are wrong, but HW was just different, to me.

          • Considering the years spent at UGA football, Charlie Trippi, Roland Bailey and Hines Ward performed at a higher level than their stats reveal…GO DAWGS!!

          • More recently Bowers reminds me of David Pollack. They impacted games, never knew quit, had a knack for making some crazy play when the team needed it. Bowers’ WLOCP catch is up there with Pollack’s sack against the Chickens.

          • One item is true with #4, he didn’t know who #16 was on the team, let alone a starter, the more Champ Bailey listened to Kirby Smart on/off the field, the more he learned/understood the dynamics of defensive scheme/ coverage and less about what the coaches were speaking…GO DAWGS!!

  3. And now this, from the FU ambassador of FU athletics, “But we do wish the organization was a little bit more tidy.” ….that “we thing” from the old ball sack could be a little telling…the magic in FU failings at the hc position, is so the FU ad looks brillllliant in the next potential hire…#FTMF!

  4. Can we keep this to no more than once a week max and no more than 1 youtube video on the front page?

This was by far my LEAST liked part of the original blog. It feels spammy and wastes a ton of space.

Just my feedback to keep it to a minimum for people who hate it.

    • Guy walks in, grabs beer, demands the channel be changed from football to The Bachelor and criticizes the decor.

      • Can’t tell if you’re joking, but “Musical Palatte Cleanser” would be the equivalent of the Bachelor here, since its a football blog not a music blog.

I know there are people who like it. I didn’t say “Get rid of this thing because I don’t like it.” That would be selfish.

I asked simply that it be kept rare like it was on GTP, and I don’t seem to recall it ever being more than 1 video on the front page.

So people who found it really annoying could easily just scroll/ignore it.

But 4 videos and back to back days is a bit much.
