Friday Fodder for Filibustering: Seeding the Playoffs

Here’s an interesting thought for a Friday:

Do you think the outcome would’ve been different? Would this have been better if it were only the top 8, as is, or if they added more to get to sixteen?

Discuss.

  1. I’m interested to see if the trend of:

Home teams win big and go on to win next round continues.

If it does, expansion beyond 8 makes very little sense and neither does winning your conference.

  2. If that was the seeding, then I think we would have beaten SMU or the Hillbillies (yet again) in our first game. After that, we almost certainly would have faced anOSU and lost.

In the other bracket, I think Oregon and ND would have faced each other in the quarterfinal. I’d have picked Oregon to win that one and then lose to the Fightin’ Just for Men (who were peaking at the right time) in the championship.

In other words, I doubt the results would have been very different. And no, having more teams wouldn’t have made the playoff any better or change the results much if any.

  3. If it were 16, we would have played number 15. Not sure who that would have been, but I think it would have been better than Notre Dame for us. Also, I think everyone that got a bye lost the next game? While I wouldn’t have expanded to 12, if we’re not going back (which we aren’t), maybe 16 is better because it gets more home games.

As for conference championships, what I would like to see in the SEC (again assuming we’re not going back) is that the 9th conference game become the week of the SEC championship with top 2 getting in automatically, and the rest being seeded and playing for a chance to get in.

  4. Potential rematch in the first game, potential rematch in the second game, potential (though unlikely) rematch in the third game.

  5. First game would have turned out better for the Dawgs. Not sure we could have beaten the BuckNuts in the semifinals at that point – with or without Beck.

  6. 8 is correct, 12 is stupid, 16 is just about the money. And Notre Dame continues to be an unjustifiable problem.
