Thank you, Hargrett Library, for reminding me of one of my favorite hangout spots from the 90s: Mellow Mushroom.
I had a couple of buddies back then that got on the esteemed 100 beer wall, which I never desired to achieve because I didn’t have the money or the palate to drink that many of a variety of beers, and they did. But they made a mean tofu sandwich and great pretzels, which went well with a couple of pitchers on night downtown.
Alas, Mellow Mushroom still exists, but not this one. It moved down the street to where Compadres used to be (I think), but the kind of eclectic, dark environment that they had made it unique.
I miss that place.
Anyway, it was a great place to combine vittles with beer, but there were many of those around town – Steverinos, Sons of Italy, Little Italy, Rocky’s, Allen’s, Mexicali Grille.

So for today’s Fodder…where is or was your favorite place to go for a pitcher and a plate? Why was it so special to you?
Locos (usually had it delivered, we had the beer already)
My favorite thing was to sit at Sons on a spring afternoon and catch a buzz from wings and a pitcher or three, then walk down the hill to Foley Field and catch a game.
Wild Wings on Clayton Street. Monday nights were AYCE wings and tots. Used to venture that way from the hinterlands for wingies and beers weekly. It was also the starting point for many an adventure throughout the bars downtown….
For me Allen’s. Quarter beer, hamburgers& bowling machines. Bunch of guys hung out there. Had to make that 5 dollars go a long way!! Those were the days!!
This was the sixties!!
Same for me in the late 70’s/early 80’s.
If I was just “drankin'” I went to Sky’s/5th Quarter/Swino’s.
If I was looking for companionship, if it was late, I went to the Frog Pond.
Me too, late 80’s. Normaltown Flyers every Wednesday (I think).
I miss drinking beer from a pitcher. I think I miss the cost of a pitcher of back then more than anything else.
Odyssey Tuesday (I think) night $5 PBR pitchers. No food I recall which would help explain the rapid over-served state we’d find ourselves in by about 9:00. Best pitchers and food was Sunday late afternoons at DaVinci’s for pitchers of mixed drinks (I think we favored Tom Collins and Sangria) plus excellent pizza before hitting the dorms to finally study…after playing Spades for 2 hours.
Davinci’s Sangria was absolutely the best; thank you for reviving that memory! Hanging out at DaVinci’s with a bunch of music majors (mostly voice) on their fifth (maybe sixth) pitcher was an experience for the ages.
Dog House across from the old Holiday Inn. Never had a colder beer. Cheap and played pong for hours!
The Georgia Pig had cheap pitchers during the week. Decent BBQ as well. I may be a bit older than some of y’all b
In the 90s, my wife and I used to walk over to Steverino’s for beer and wings.
I stopped going to Mellow Mushroom after my friend got a salad there and found a used bandaid in it.
My favorites in the 90s were steverino’s(best sub ever) and the mayflower for breakfast.
In the 70’s, Papa Joe’s for beer and boiled peanuts. Don’t remember if they had other food.
Taco Stand downtown. Beer (and the occassional marg) with the cheese dip.

My memory is hazy over which one served whole wings versus the split wings but me and 2 other guys did 10 dozen wings (split) in order to get a free pitcher of beer at either Sons or Steverinos won February Saturday afternoon. We regularly went there.
There was a place downtown for time called ET’s that had decent wings and beer.
That being said my favorite spot was The Globe after it opened in 89. But that was long before they had food, liquor, or anything much beyond Bass, Guinness and Harp.
Steverion’s definitely had whole wings.
The wings at Rocky’s were good and particularly hot if you knew to ask for the secret hot sauce that wasn’t on the menu.
UGA-SC Game 2005. September 10, 2005. Sprinted out of the game to get a table at Mellow Mushroom with a cute girl from class. Turned out to be the first “date” with my wife. Loved that place!
In the ‘70s there was a little beer/pizza/foosball place called The Bad Dog Saloon off of Baxter. Lots of great times and friends .
