Friday Afternoon Time Waster

Good afternoon. I haven’t gotten one of these done for a few weeks so, I thought I’d take a crack at another one. I posted a full game video of the Diamond Dawgs yesterday and I mentioned that we were primarily here for football. But, UGA has a lot of successful programs making noise in other sports besides football.

Leaving aside football, as I expect it would overwhelmingly be the favorite sport for you, our dear readers… what sport is in second place for gaining your attention? And on the other side of the coin, what sport doesn’t interest you much at all?

For me, baseball is second only to football. Basketball is a sport I care very little for. I mean, if the Dawgs basketball team were challenging for a championship, I’d tune in and cheer for the Dawgs, just because. But, regular season? No interest.

Now, I’m only referring to collegiate sports that UGA participates in, not the pros or sports you enjoy playing yourself. So, what UGA sport is second to football for you and what sport do you not pay much attention to??

  1. I love a good track meet. Had season tickets for track & field for the Olympics and made a photo of Gwen Torrance on the gold medal stand.

  2. Men’s basketball is my second favorite, by a large margin. I check on the baseball team regularly, and watch occasionally, and follow results for softball, women’s hoops, golf, track, etc. weekly.

  3. Women’s softball. Coached when my daughter played in rec, stayed on several more years after. They are so fiery& passionate. To me , the games moves faster. I love it!!!

  4. Hoops secondly — “www.firepeewee.com”
Baseball, softball, golf tied for 3rd

  5. Baseball is second for me now that you can find almost every game on tv. I also enjoy watching tennis team championships the duel format with everyone playing at once is fun. I’m fair weather when it comes to basketball.

  6. Definitely basketball, with baseball right behind. Softball has been growing on me as we’ve established a solid program and they’re genuinely fun to watch. I wished I could watch Georgia golf and tennis. As good as gymnastics has been, I just can’t watch because, for the life of me, I’ve never understood the scoring and my ADD self can’t keep up with all the switches between events.

  7. Probably Baseball and then Track and Field. Basketball next. I watch everything Georgia if I can get it on TV. Picked up ESPN Plus back in the fall and glad I did, because now I can watch baseball, girls softball and gymnastics.

  8. Here recently, the women’s soccer team. I coached my daughters’ rec league teams, and we have friends whose daughter plays for Georgia, so there’s some extra rooting interest there.

    Then it’s softball/baseball, golf, and if I’ve taken a Pepcid, men’s basketball.

I can also put men’s basketball in the “doesn’t interest me very much” column .

    • Dang, hate it that the men lost. Hopefully Dawg fans are barking long and loud to support the women. I used to LOVE going to the matches in the 80’s when Magill built it up and we had the NCAAs first there. Those California jocks didn’t know what to make of us Dawg fans, but they enjoyed it until we started kicking their asses.

      • Absolutely correct. Georgia has very ardent and sophisticated tennis fans.

Georgia women won tonight so they’re in the final four and play either Texas A&M or UNC tomorrow at 7 pm in Athens, and, barring some disaster, I’ll be there.

  9. Baseball by a long shot; it’s much closer to football than anything else is to baseball. Been to Omaha three different times and in one season (2004) made it to at least part of 45 games. I’m still bitter about that Fresno series…

Lack of interest, for fear of getting ratioed, comes in the women’s sports. Nothing against them, glad they’re playing them, but I find myself unable to get extremely worked up about whether they win or lose. I’ll try to watch softball or basketball or even gymnastics (which I’ll at least take over the Olympics) when they get important, but I just can’t get into them. Exception to that would be track and swimming, I know they’re slower in those sports just like the team sports but for some reason that doesn’t lead to the viewing quality declining the same way it does for basketball, for instance.

  10. Hoop Dawgs fo shizzle (all the kids are still saying that, right!?😂). Baseball next, and then any other sport I happen to catch on the tube beyond that. I was just watching the baseball game and it’s always fun watching us beat Auburn!

  11. I had several good friends who were Swim Dawgs back in the day and others who were Gym Dawgs when Yoculan dominated the space so I have followed them since I matriculated in ’90.

  12. I loved going to Foley Field on a beautiful spring afternoon during my time in Athens. The scenery was always good with girls in their sundresses working on their tan or attempting to catch some player’s eye.

The Tuesday or Wednesday night when the nerds would show up was always fun to watch. Whoever played right field in front of Kudzu Hill was in for a long night. I remember the crowd out there throwing tennis balls at Ricardo Ingram and chanting his first name by changing it to a word we don’t use anymore. Actually, he took it all in good fun unlike Albert Belle during the SEC tournament.
