First look at Ole Miss

Georgia returns home for a mammoth home game on Saturday afternoon against the Ole Miss Rebels in a match-up that has likely been circled on Kirby’s calendar since the disaster that was last year in Oxford. Georgia looks to continue to make a run to toward the SEC championship and a playoff berth while the the Rebels look for their first SEC championship game appearance and to assert their position as the flag bearer for the SEC in the playoff. Let’s get to the first look.

Series record

Georgia has dominated the series 33-14-1 while Ole Miss won the last meeting in Oxford.

Last meeting

Ole Miss physically beats up the Dawgs 28-10 in Oxford. After a promising start after an early interception, the Dawgs sputter on offense and don’t slow down the Rebels’ passing offense as the Rebels stretch the lead. The crowd at Vaught-Hemingway storm the field. 2 weeks later Ole Miss faceplants in Hogtown losing their opportunity to go to Atlanta and a likely playoff bid.

Gambling degenerate facts

The Dawgs are a solid 8.5 point favorite with a point total of 54.5 and a -300 favorite on the money line.

Interesting statistic: 4.78 – Ole Miss rushing defense per attempt

Other than the game against LSU, the Ole Miss defense has been susceptible to the run. Arkansas rang up 221 yards and 4 rushing TDs, and Kentucky put up 172 yards and a couple of TDs. That stat is radically different from last year where the Rebels gave up less than 100 yards rushing in 9 of 13 games and only gave up 7 rushing TDs the entire year.

Early outlook

With a spread greater than a touchdown, you would think the rankings of the teams would be reversed. If the Dawgs can run the ball effectively and take care of the ball, Georgia has a great chance to get a win in front of the home crowd and a boost heading to the back half of the schedule. It’s likely this game goes deep into the 4th quarter.

I admit I’m worried about the defense on Saturday because the slow start on defense can’t happen.

I've been a Dawg my entire life. UGA was always my dream school where I received 2 Terry College degrees and met my DGD wife. I've been a season ticket holder for over 30 years and love the in-stadium experience over anything from Section HD. My first game in Sanford Stadium was the 1981 Auburn game where we clinched the SEC championship. The best game I've attended in person was the Midnight Miss against Ohio State (nite, nite!). The best home games I've attended were the 1984 Clemson game (the Butler did it) and the 2013 LSU game (that 4th down is still the loudest single moment I've experienced between the hedges). The game I love to win is against the Handbags (FTMF), and the game I hate to lose is the NATS (Tuck Fech).

  1. The Kiffin Kancer seems to have mellowed a little recently. Or maybe I just don’t notice his incredible whoppers since he’s out there.

  2. Smart ass Kiffen. If possible, I hope Kirby runs it up on his ass for that. ⬆️

    • Should UGA football take down ol miss Saturday evening, the media response will be the rankings are very premature at this point of the season, mainly meaningless and that UGA football should defeat ol miss at Sanford Stadium, nothing to see here….GO DAWGS!!

  3. I certainly hope we smoke them; however, I find Kiffin refreshing.
Willing to speak his mind & usually no coach speak.
Definitely need to control the game & keep their offense off the field.
    Trinidad scares me.

  4. Dawgs giving 8.5 points is insane. I’d be happy with any win (probably, LOL) but I think 8.5 points is way too generous.

    • Russ, I feel the same way. Vegas does not often get lines wrong, but this one feels like a swing and a miss. There has to be something that I am missing.

    • I would agree. I also see a team whose best win has been devalued. They have not been impressive in their SEC road win (at UK) and have some scruffy wins at home (Ark, WSU). This is the first time they are going into a truly hostile environment.

    • Apparently all remnants of their good run defense last year has disappeared.

  5. The kind of slow starts we had against Alabama, Auburn or just about any decent team we’ve played the last two seasons, will turn this game into a repeat of last year. Georgia cannot afford to put itself in a deep hole before responding. Kiffin will throw the kitchen sink at us and he is very good at what he does. Waiting until halftime to make adjustments isn’t a good strategy. We already had one team come to Athens with the determination and game plan to defeat us on our home field. Let’s not allow that to happen again.

  6. It’s like a battle for my degenerate soul: a devil on one shoulder whispering Ol Piss’s run defense will let us start strong, nothing on the other shoulder, and then I look back at that first shoulder and angelic Munsons & We a 7&5 Nolan Smith IIs are putting the boots to that dumb arse devil.

  7. This game is the season maker. Win any possible way that we can. If we can blow them out and start the chatter of Laner to Gainesville – great. Beat them by one and start the chatter of Laner to Gainesville – great. Either way we need to beat them. The chatter of Laner to Gainesville is going to happen.

  8. They have a QB who runs. That is almost always a problem for our defense. Just play clean don’t beat yourself football and we should be able to grind out comfortable win.
