First look at Georgia Tech

Playing on Black Friday night is weird especially given where Georgia high school football is in the playoffs (I know Helene had something to do with that). The Dawgs look to complete another home slate undefeated and to make it 7iaR, B over the trade school. As usual, Georgia has everything to look forward to next week in Mercedes-Benz while the Jacketasses play their Super Bowl. The other times this has been the case in Athens, Georgia, the Dawgs have given its little brother their best shot. Let’s get to the first look.

Series Record: Georgia leads 71-41-5 and has a 6-game winning streak in the series and has dominated the series with a 19-3 record in the series in Richt-Smart era.

Last Meeting: After another slow start caused by a turnover deep in Georgia territory, the Dawgs fall behind in Atlanta. A 24-3 spurt in the 2nd and 3rd quarters jumpstart the Dawgs to victory. The enemy scores 10 points in the 4th quarter aided by some questionable officiating to give Brent Key his first moral victory as the head nerd.

Gambling Degenerate Facts: Georgia is currently a 19.5 point favorite with a -1149 moneyline, and the point total is 53.

Interesting Statistic: 5 – Interceptions by the Tech defense

In 11 games, they have intercepted 5 passes with 3 of those last week in their 1-point thrashing of an NC State team that is playing for bowl eligibility against UNC and has had QB issues since Grayson McCall’s season ending injury. I assume that means there are going to be opportunities for Carson Beck and the Georgia passing game to feast on the Fech defense. Cam Ward wasn’t the reason Miami lost to Georgia Tech earlier in the season.

Early Outlook

If the Georgia defensive line and linebackers play as they have when challenged at other times this year, this game isn’t going to be close and Haynes King may not make it through the game. Philo is a nice story as a young quarterback, but he will be trying to throw against a different beast than he has seen this year. Just as 2022, I expect Key to throw everything but the kitchen sink (and maybe that) at Georgia to try to get and hold early momentum. It’s going to take a lot of help and a lack of preparation for Georgia to lose on Friday night.

Students, please get back to Athens on Friday and fill the student section as a difference maker as you did against Tennessee. Fans, be in the stadium early to let the team know we are behind them and not looking ahead to next week in Atlanta. Team, come out playing with your hair on fire and put little brother in his rightful place and the Governor’s Cup back in the Butts-Mehre trophy case.

What’s your thought on Saturday at this point? I’ll be back later this week with a full scope preview. Let us know in the comments below.

I've been a Dawg my entire life. UGA was always my dream school where I received 2 Terry College degrees and met my DGD wife. I've been a season ticket holder for over 30 years and love the in-stadium experience over anything from Section HD. My first game in Sanford Stadium was the 1981 Auburn game where we clinched the SEC championship. The best game I've attended in person was the Midnight Miss against Ohio State (nite, nite!). The best home games I've attended were the 1984 Clemson game (the Butler did it) and the 2013 LSU game (that 4th down is still the loudest single moment I've experienced between the hedges). The game I love to win is against the Handbags (FTMF), and the game I hate to lose is the NATS (Tuck Fech).

  1. Dawgs slow start, poor tackling then outpace the other guys. Wait…that was last week and several others. Students won’t fill their seats, we get by the nerds but by only 2 scores. Everyone will doubt this team in the coming weeks…just what Kirby wants.

  2. Gotta limit the run. No cheap turnovers. If the oline can Beck time he can eat them up.

  3. A lot of Tech fans are believing they can pull off an upset Friday night. Which makes whipping that ass even better. Go Dawgs!

    • I honestly don’t know why they believe that. They have won exactly 1 game in an opponent’s stadium this year … a terrible UNC team by 7 …, lost at Syracuse and was boatraced twice at Louisville and Virginia Tech. Yet, they think they are going to beat us in Sanford where we haven’t lost in 5 years.

  4. Not sure you need a second look, this is spot on. Do Kirby and the staff get the guys motivated enough to tackle like they need to in a rivalry game where the other side will play out of their minds? If so, and we don’t break the record for drops in a game, it’s an easy win, because Tech doesn’t have the horses on defense to hang with our offense functioning at a B+ level, let alone as they have the last 2 games. I don’t like the spread (I’d have it at 17) but I do like the win after pulling away in the 4th at home. Go Dawgs and Happy Thanksgiving!

  5. Pickens didn’t start it. But he finished it. Respect the classics!

I, for one, am pumped for the Friday game. We travel to visit family on Thanksgiving and have driven back to GA the past 6 years on Saturday. Looking forward to watching the Dawgs!

Happy Thanksgiving to the Refugees, and my thanks to the crew who kept the spirit of the Senator alive.

  6. I’m glad to hear some of the nerds think they’ll win tomorrow. Beating tech is never enough. Their hopes and dreams of victory must be crushed.

  7. I don’t know why we are so consistantly inconsistant this year but heres hoping Kirby can get a foot up the DE’s ass so they will set the edge…I also hope we don’t play scared of King (running) to the point we set back in that soft contain (or whatever the hell it is) and let him dictate the game ala Milroe and Dart… I am hoping for a Dawg win but these guys don’t always show up on both sides of the ball at the same time…
