Kind of mentioned this last week, but let’s be clear: what would you do to “fix” the 2024 ‘Dawgs? To make it challenging, don’t simply reply with “fire Bobo”. Let’s assume that the play calls are the right calls, but execution is lacking.
I’ll start:
- Utilize motion more for screen passes. Defenses are either sniffing them out too easily or our receivers aren’t executing blocks, but added motion might help.
- Consider more tosses or misdirections in the run game. Our line isn’t doing the best of jobs opening holes between the tackles and Etienne is having to create a lot of yards on his own.
- What happened to the seam routes? We’re either trying back shoulder fades, screens, or crossing routes a good bit, but with our 12 and 13 sets there’s no reason we couldn’t find these more often to loosen up the run game. Also timing and execution from Beck to his receivers has been lacking.
- Tackling. Lord were whiffing a lot and arm tackling in a space that used to be our bread and butter. Maybe Agent Muschamp needs more time with the team?
So what’re your thoughts?
The tackling has been atrocious. Is that because injuries especially on defense are limiting how much we’re doing on Bloody Tuesday?
On offense, get the ball to Dom Lovett in the middle of the field. He seems to be open more often than not.
Finally, get rid of the penalties.
Agree on Lovett innthe middle of the field. He wins. It seems like Beck is making bad choices on where to go to certain guys. All of the receivers do one thing better than they do everything else. Make your choices accordingly.
Beck has been making bad choices and been off on good choices.
UGA offense at 19:45
I very well might be wrong but it seemed like there weren’t as many missed tackles Saturday as there were in the two games before. There were some. But it didn’t seem like it was nearly as bad. The stats might say otherwise. This is just from watching the game once in real time.
One legitimate criticism of Bobo is his love affair with the back shoulder fade. We do too much of it. Seam routes are a good idea.
To me one that seems obvious is moving Truss inside to guard and putting Monroe Freeling at tackle. Brent Rollins was bullish on this and pointed out that Truss has never played as well at tackle as he has at guard. When Freeling was in the game Saturday and Truss slid to guard the offense just seemed to have more life.
Another thing Rollins pointed out, through five games we’ve been heavy on screens. Why not fake some screens. Beck did this once Saturday to great affect. More of that seems like a good idea.
The defense is still my major source of anxiety when watching games this year.
Coincidence that D tackling(spec. in DBs) has slid since Coach Boom has semi retired.
Beck and his receivers seem to lack that connection they had. I don’t know if it was losing Rara at the last minute but they need to do some more connecting.
As craptastic as the ‘24 Dawgs have looked on both sides of the ball, we are only one play away from being undefeated.
Hoping that Mr Bobo is setting things up for this final stretch run of games.
We are playing a brutal schedule and having only one or two losses by Dec 5th would still be pretty special by my estimation.
This team is certainly a significantly above average team when compared to the rest of CFB. This is a BELOW average team when you compare them to the last few years of UGA football.
While true, the team hasn’t played to their potential for more than a half all year.
This week was consistantly mediocre. This looks like a good CMR, Bobo team.
Bring Boom back on defense to teach tackling. Hartley or someone needs to teach the TEs to block. Get Luckie the ball down the seam more often.
They also need someone to teach defenders to get off of blocks. Even Kirby said that after the game.
Smart was asked about Georgia’s issues with defending the run. Auburn running back Jarquez Hunter had a big night in that regard, especially when he was able to find space to the outside. He averaged over 7 yards per carry and scored Auburn’s lone TD of the game.
Smart had somewhat-complicated diagnosis for Georgia’s struggles against the run, but ended up boiling it down to something simple.
“I would probably attribute it to the fact that we’re in a 3-down front,” Smart said. “They blocked odd, mug, and they brought a guy around the edge, and we didn’t do a good job of handling that. We didn’t strike blockers and get off.
“You gotta do sometimes what you call ‘open a can of whoop-ass’ and we didn’t do that.”
O-line play has been my biggest concern. Mainly in regards to run blocking. I agree with the sentiment on moving Truss inside to guard. They seem to play better when that is the case.
Also…tackling! Especially safeties not named Jackson.
I feel guilty bitching about our team (we have been very fortunate since the arrival of CKS), but this team seems a little less intense and efficient than the last few years past. This seems true in every aspect of the game. At times the OL gets pushed around, Beck seems inconsistent, tackling can be suspect, and even our DB’s get beat more often than before. Even last year, the team seems to have a hard time kicking into gear. Only the kicking game has held its level of excellence.
I wonder if the coaching staff is simply having a hard time reaching these guys? That said, we still have one of the best teams in the country, and it would only take a small dial up in intensity and execution to regain “elite” status.
I mentioned it yesterday, but Starks seems to have gone backwards. Missing tackles, cover skills not as sharp. Young Bolden playing like a true freshman, though he was better Saturday, still missing tackles.
I did see more motion this game compared to Bama game.
Perhaps the biggest thing I’ve noticed this year compared to last year is the lack of play action. Oh we’ll stick it in the belly on occasions but I’m talking play action with beck rolling out to put pressure on the edges.
Get healthy on both lines and the other pieces fall into place. The OL is letting too many defenders into the holes in the LOS for our running game to get going. Entienne is good and can be better if not constantly disrupted in the backfield. Good to see Frazier back…need his speed and shiftiness outside. Beck is being protected well but we don’t have a TE or receiver who is getting open for quick slants and seams. He’s being forced to go through more progressions which takes longer and thus the pass protection starts to break down so he can’t throw cleanly. He’s not a rollout QB but I think we need to move the pocket some. Bobo’s play calling is not the problem. We just don’t have the same level of talent on the field as we had the last few years.
We are a little weak on the DL too. Much improved vs Auburn but we don’t have 4 guys who clog the middle and force pressure on the QB. I think the poor tackling is a result of ball carriers getting to the second level too cleanly. We miss Roquain, Nolan, etc. Again, just too many key injuries right now. Young pups need to keep being coached up. Got to believe Kirby’s on that mutha.
Coaching: Bobo needs to fix Carson’s head. I think Beck is trying to do too much with too little. We still out-talent everyone so keep things simple. The comeback against Bama shows he can hit passes on basic routes to keep moving the sticks. Stay with that. Schumann needs to find a real on field leader. D just seems so lost at times. Kirby is missing Lanning, Boom and Monken. NIL and the portal are disrupting “The Process”. It drove Saban to retirement and every other top coach is struggling with some aspect of it. Sure, Kirby is probably the best at adapting but that means things are different and those adjustments take time to gel. This is definitely a work in progress team, not a Ferrari needing a simple tuneup.
I think this latest edition came from IKEA and Kirby is still trying to figure out how all the pieces fit together (and are any of the parts missing or defective).
Unfortunately I’m not sure if this team is getting any better this year. After playing their best football of the year late against Alabama we came back out flat against Auburn at home. These guys simply don’t have the same fire in their belly we’ve become accustomed to in recent years. Sure, the capability appears to be there. But we’ve yet to play up to that capability in a game for more than one or two quarters. While we could easily be undefeated and ranked number one, we could just as easily be a two loss team already. We’re halfway through the season. I think what we’ve seen is what we’re going to get. Hopefully, we don’t come out so slow as not to be able to catch up against teams like Texas and Ole Miss. Both can sling the ball around and score quickly.
And 10RC, AND all on the road.
Friendly reminder that our D has given up six TDs in five football games.
1) Get healthy
2) Until then, moar Oklahoma drills for the secondary;
3) Moar PT for Luckie
4) Moar offensive eye candy
I think if Ratledge and Wilson can get healthy, the team will also get healthy.
Replace 6 with 1(ellis Robinson)
24 to Star
20 to safety..
Get healthy soon..
