78 Days Until G Day

Following this weekend’s Senior Bowl, we begin fasting until the next slight sliver of hope appears on the horizon for some college football…G Day.

Don’t have a time yet, but 78 days is a long way away. What will happen in the space between now and April 18th you say?

  • NCAA March Madness will start and end (March 16th through April 6th)
  • Winter Training for MLB will begin and end, first pitch for Braves on March 27th
  • The CFP will play the semifinal and championship games (kidding)
  • Winter will give way to Spring, Friday March 20th
  • The Masters, April 9th-12th
  • Easter Egg hunting, April 5th
  • Mike Bobo rises from hibernation with a new set of screens and 3rd and long run plays
  • Lent and Fat Tuesday February 17th – April 2nd
  • Turning the Savannah River green March 17th
  • Turkey Season Opens March 28th

In other words, there’s things out there to do, you scamps. Spring Practice starts in March, so it’s not that far away when you think about it.

  1. Hopefully nothing involving the ghost of Mudcat’s car. For a player who outgrew his high school frame to never becoming the expected star. He certainly left a lasting legacy at Georgia.

    He was a super nice young man too. Just avoid getting into his car.

  2. Baseball is coming. So is softball. Both are predicted to be pretty good! I will watch anything that the Dawgs play. I hate everybody but us!!!Go Dawgs!!

  3. Duck season ended last weekend. The wind makes fishing in the gulf difficult until summer. From now until then it’s time to fill the freezer with crappie. If the turkey population in north Terrell co ever comes back I’ll spend some time chasing them. So my seasons are crappie, snapper, football and duck with some overlap.

    • Turkey season in middle GA has been depressing for several years now for me.

      • Turkey populations have been declining all over the SE for years.
        Lots of research being done but not too many concrete answers.
        Making the season later is a good start. Toms are esp stupid in the earliest part of Spring (kind of need some of them around to breed the hens) and more foliage makes them harder to hear and find (and hunt) and more jumpy because their sight is limited making them more cautious.
        The later season and tougher hunting conditions may help with turkey numbers.
        And it’s a fact that when the hunting gets tough enough, a lot of people will give it up, saving birds.
        Of course a huge factor is coyotes, hogs, owls, raccoons, bobcats, buzzards, hawks, possums, foxes and crows that prey not just on the birds but also on their nest/eggs. I’ve noticed that crows will follow a hen to her nest and harass her until they can feast on the eggs. I’ve also witnessed a full sized hen being attacked by a hawk. We can’t kill raptors (federal and state law) and I don’t like to do it, but we need to thin out the other predators.
        Some of the same things, plus the huge loss of habitat and “clean” farming practices have plagued the quail population..I never see them now. Bobwhite calls used to be part of the listening landscape during the spring and summer but I haven’t heard one in a couple of years.
        The state’s “DiLane WMA” near Waynesboro is a great place to turkey hunt and quail hunt. It has been a great example of what proper management can do…but the hogs have done their nasty work there too.
        And it’s looking like the lakes are all going to be frozen over until around July so there goes our spring crappie fishing. (this is the longest hard cold spell I think I’ve seen in Georgia).
        But maybe this deep cold will kill the Joro Spiders off. I hope.

        • Just watching what’s happened in the past thirty years we’ve been on our hunting property, but we always used to see flocks of turkey and hear them all the time, until we didn’t. It was about that time that it was becoming more customary to see coyotes and hear them all night long. I think that’s culprit number one…the secondary part, if you’re saying foxes and crows are predatory or bad for turkeys, is that there’s less hunting interest nowadays for the off-season culling, like shooting crows or foxes, people don’t seem to have the appetite for it anymore. Used to love going out with my Anschutz .22 and plinking crows when I could get the chance. That was four decades ago, though.

  4. Daytona…for the crashes. Men’s SECBB Championship for the same reason 😟. The Olympics are fun for two weeks. Our skiing season is shot here (no snow…give it back Mississippi!) so that sucks.

  6. Sorry, JP, we don’t turn the river green. They tried it once many years ago and it was a blob of color that quickly flowed out to sea to poison some dolphins (probably).

    Also, only tourists drink green beer. Real Irish Savannahians drink whiskey. Sláinte!
