Talk about something we didn’t see last year in Athens. Not to complain too too much, but it seemed like the defense didn’t generate near enough pressure and the big gains on offense were minimal, if ever. Seems like it’s become a point of emphasis this year in the offseason.
Now, last year it was the establish the run and stop the run, which the team did well. A CFP berth and an SEC Championship is nothing to be ashamed of, after all. But there were more downfield throws on Saturday, which gives a little credence that Mike isn’t just preaching but the team is working on it, too.
On the other side of the ball, there was plenty of backfield disruption (yes, I know, it was a spring game and the defense knew there would be passing aplenty), and it looks like the last two recruiting cycles have been building to improving this. And to think, the Auburn transfer to help address this wasn’t even in action.
Now, if we can maintain the prior year’s focus on the run game and insert more havoc and explosiveness, then I think we’re nearing closer to getting back to Championship form.
Now for the biggest test of this team for the 2026 season: surviving the offseason injury season and the the off-field antics.
Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, as they say.
Teens in comp % on downfield passes is pathetic. We don’t seem to have guys who can consistently separate. Is that our DB’s or is it ineffective WR’s? Is it because the defense knew what we were up to? Who knows?
Gotta hit more than double than what we did OR you’ve got to be three yards and a cloud of dust and play to your defense and special teams.
Not worried about D. But the offense is a question mark.
More designed qb runs would open some of those downfield passes up, but I don’t know how comfortable we are with adding those in consistently.
I saw enough from two of the qbs to believe that a qb injury isn’t fatal.
Puglisi did not look good in my opinion and needs to work on his touch passes. Montgomery threw some nice balls I thought though showing promise.
Its is spring practice. We aren’t going to see or learn shit about this team until after OU rolls into town, other than we have some real ballers
Texas has absolutely no business in SEC tradition. They sux from way back! Go back to southwest or better still to small 12!! FTMF’s and bring on the barbed wires!!! I hate everybody but us. To satisfy
some, Hate IS relative!
The Mike Bobo conundrum. If explosive play calls only hit at 16% you’re going to lose. As OC he and his staff have got to coach this up. As play caller the WR screen is always good for a few yards.
P.S. It is not my belief CMB doesn’t know this and is doing what he can to improve things. It is my personal opinion that there are different offensive minds out there who can get more out of the talent on hand particularly at the TE position like we saw with Monken. Kirby’s dancing with the date he brought with him.
Adding explosives is going to be a tall task when you replaced Colbie Young and Zachariah Branch with a possession receiver like Isiah Canion. Talyn Taylor moves like Devonta Smith, but Bobo seems to struggle getting him the ball. The Dandridge kid looked promising, but pretty green. CJ Wiley drops a lot of passes. Maybe Sacovie White can become what Branch was? I’m not sure London Humphries will lend much to additional explosive plays. I feel kind of like I felt going into the 2019 season except I’m not seeing a young phenom like George Pickens on the roster. I do think Georgia has more options in 2026 than 2019 when it was basically just Pickens, Cager and pre injury Dominick Blaylock (who was pretty good).
Knowing Bobo he’ll get everyone’s hopes up during the regular season just to crash and burn come playoff time. I’m not falling for it.
