About Those Lambos and Longhorns

Remember those days when they showed the Longhorns rolling out sports cars and huge wads of cash? And how Texas could just lock in those five stars by the buckets and they’d be GUARANTEED that the SEC run through Austin? Right? RIGHT?

Welp. Doesn’t look like it’s working…two years in, zero titles, and three losses to Georgia in the process while they poach Georgia recruits with the big money and sports cars.

Seems to be working well. Keep it up, Sark…and, as always, horns down.

  1. I think it’s become personal between Kirby and Sark. Kirby has never taken a personal shot at Sark but makes it clear that he believes the SEC office has treated Texas with kid gloves. He has taken veiled shots at Texas with some of his comments about NIL and culture. Sark had the linebacker from Grayson make his commitment public with Pat McAfee during Georgia’s time slot at SEC Media Days when he could have just as easily done it at any other time.

I don’t know if Kirby will ever sign another #1 recruiting class because we aren’t playing the NIL game the same way as others, but I do know that there isn’t another staff in the sport who will develop the way these guys do.

    • By the way, I have read that the difference in a #1 is 20 recruiting class is now much closer than it used to be. NIL has spread the talent out.

    • Texas is Mark Richt Georgia. But whereas the college football media never ever believed in Richt led Georgia for some reason they think every year is the year for Texas. Texas is not a national power and they haven’t been in my life time. The entire thing is a sham.

        • I wasn’t comparing Sarkisian and Richt as people. And I have disagree on Richt’s ability to develop.

          • The Senator would have pointed out there is a difference between a UGAAA being committed to winning and being financially committed to winning. Guess which one Richt worked for.

  2. Its possible that Texas is running guys off to have more $ to spend on other teams players. I know enough about UT that for them to see their two biggest rivals and Texas Tech make the playoffs while they sit it out has to cause lots of hand wringing and concern.

  3. The programs that provide the best mix of dollars and development will flourish in this environment. Kirby’s track record of development and the program’s commitment to competitive compensation has me optimistic about where we’re headed. Meanwhile Tejas only offers half of that formula. All Sark has done has created a pretty looking house of cards that’s about to fall!

    • They’re getting Florida’s RB from the portal and they got the second best RB out of HS. Then they’ll lay 2 other kids to go into the portal as well. Don’t think they’ll be hurting much at RB. Bigger issue is on defense where they lose a ton of production. Will has a project on his hands with only 1-2 proven talents.

    • I believe running backs like QB’s enter the portal as a negotiating tool. Wisner is a very good back but in Sark’s offense was under utilized.

Sark is a west coast soft coach, Will can bring a little attitude to the defense, but don’t think he can overcome the soft culture that has been built in Austin.

      • Sark played his college ball in Provo. ‘Nuff said. As for Agent Will…count me in the crew that is grateful for his contributions to our defense since coming in from the cold, but by no means do I believe that he is a difference-maker as a DC. As others have observed- his Defenses have traditionally been at their best when he is working for Kirby or Saban. Otherwise? Mehh… I do think he has the potential to further complicate our in-state recruiting efforts, however, given the relationships he has here.

  4. Recruiting top classes and keeping top classes around are two totally different things. EVERYBODY loses players to the portal and has to go shopping, but Kirby seems to have found the formula. He is still able to lure top tier talent in bunches to Athnes and is able to keep the vast majority of the talent he recruits. He doesn’t build teams through the portal, he only accessorizes what he’s built. When it’s ONLY about the money, it’s not going to win well (TEXAS). Money can build recruiting classes, but it can’t build teams (ESPECIALLY championship level teams).

    • Soooooo many layers to that conversation….Ca$h now is king, when peeps wake and see development for next level shit is really where it all begins/ends, they’ll transfer and attempt to figure out where that source really lies…their agent/rep will try to $way them to in another direction…good fucking luck with that adventure….GO DAWGS!!

  5. Texas and aTm had designer schedules last round. That reverses now and let’s see how they handle SEC normalcy. By designer, I meant designed for them to win the conference. Ours definitely was not.

  6. Sark seems to be focusing on the defense, firing their DC and hiring Boom. But anyone that watched them could see the offense was their problem. Of course, Sark is the OC so he can’t fire himself.
