I Am Superman

Your Musical Palate Cleanser, if you will.

Why? In case you weren’t aware, it’s ACC Media Days, and, no, it’s not the annual review of player arrests by Athens’s finest.

“Obviously his success is undeniable,” Beck said of Ward. “I don’t know him very well. I’ve been able to meet him a couple of times… The last school I was at, I followed up a two-time National Champion [Stetson Bennett], so I didn’t really feel any pressure there. It’s just a game, man. I’ve played football since I was seven years old and it’s something that I love to do.

“I’ve got a lot of good talent and coaches and positions around me I think to help me not only achieve my goals but be very successful. Again, I’m really just looking forward to the opportunity to go out and play football again because I haven’t done it in a while.”

“It’s just a game, man” has some Reggie Ball undertones to it, and I’m not sure Kirby shares the same casual viewpoint of football in Athens. Regardless, he waited his time and did things as best he could, so nothing but the best of luck to him in Coral Gables.

I hope he knows how to take a knee when he needs to, because his coach doesn’t seem to.

  1. Yeah I don’t hate Beck and don’t care what kind of car he drives.

  2. Also, I bet a lot of people have no idea ACC media days are this week. I sure didn’t.

  3. Beck’s comments about the talent and coaches around him setting him up to meet HIS goals are telling.

    • And to think he had NO talent around him at UGA. Damn Kirby, you ain’t crootin good enough. Might as well blame it on Bobo.

      • A lot did fall on his shoulders last year with how anemic the running game was. Plus all of the drops. How many of our receivers were both reliable and creating separation? My number is somewhere around 0. Add the injury and I don’t doubt last season was pretty brutal on the guy.

But for that injury he would have probably landed in a pretty sweet spot in last year’s draft.

I think the calculation was that his cost was too great in combination with rehab and he found a place willing to pony up.

Hopefully we’ll see that Kirby was right and that we’d be in good hands with Stockton. It’s coming fast.

    • He’s been talking about HIS goals since before the 2023 season. Exhibit A on poor leadership.

  4. No ill will toward Beck.
Feels like he falls into Kirbys ‘transactional’ bucket vs. ‘relationship’ bucket… when your top player talks about ‘his’ goals instead of ‘team’ goals, there may be a red flag being waved

    • Not sure I agree with this. He stuck around even when he knew he was going to sit on the bench. That’s not what young QBs generally do in the portal era.

I will say he probably should have said I’ll take less money from the collective in 2024, so we can upgrade the skill guys around him. Then the OL injuries hit during the season.

By the end of the season, he was done, and that showed when he looked like he was in New Orleans against his will. It seems he burned a lot of bridges in December.

I’m guessing he came to Kirby when he decided to pull his name out of the draft and was surprised when Kirby said, “Thanks but we’re good.”

  5. Yes a lot fell on Beck’s shoulders last year. He literally sacrificed his body trying to make a play for Georgia last year so no hard feelings on the move to Miami. I think the NIL and his massive car purchase last year struck a nerve in some who were battling and bleeding. His calm demeanor maybe a positive in the pro’s but I think in College and particular the SEC and Georgia you need a little fire in the belly. I think that was missing which translated to leadership issues.

  6. His receivers and OL did him no favors. Beat Texas twice and won the SEC. Avoided being one of Cleveland’s 7 QBs trying to get the starting job. Has his hottie in Miami, mega cash and a coach that will let him put up numbers. Win-win for everyone as he’s moved on and so have we.

  7. On the tangential topic… “Life’s Rich Pageant,” in my mind, is in a dog-fight with “Fables of the Reconstruction” for the most underrated REM album of all time.

    • It’s always been my favorite, actually. All the other albums have great songs on them, but Life’s Rich Pageant is the best sum-is-greater-than-its-parts album REM ever produced.

  8. I have zero issues with Carson. He waited his turn and worked hard for our program. 24-3 as a starter is no joke. He handled the presser yesterday as well as he could. I hope he has a great season and is able to improve his draft status.

  9. Best wishes for Carson, who is still a Dawg in my opinion. Herschel left for the money after 3 years. Are we gonna be upset Carson left for money after 4? That said, he couldn’t throw an accurate deep ball and that’s why our running game sucked last year IMO. Maybe Gunner can.
