Dawgs in the ATL – SEC Media Days recap

DGDs.

I watched DVR of the Georgia coverage on SEC Network so you don’t have to. CJ Allen, Daylen Everette, and Gunner Stockton made the trip west with Kirby from Athens to the College Football Hall of Fame to represent the Dawgs at SEC Media Days yesterday. Here are a few highlights from the SECN’s coverage of Georgia:

  1. Kirby appears confident – Whether in front of the media or on the SEC Network, Kirby seemed confident in his team. He is confident in his direction for the program – “fire, passion and energy,” “relational over transactional,” and “if you don’t want to be coached hard, don’t come to Georgia.” Even the most objective observer would say, “that guy gets culture.”
  2. Gunner looked comfortable – I didn’t expect Gunner to say anything crazy, and he didn’t disappoint. I heard no one say or imply that Georgia was in trouble with Stockton. On the other hand, I heard multiple times that Stockton wasn’t the problem in the Notre Dame game. There were no back-handed compliments from the SEC Network stage. F-bum is disappointed.
  3. CJ Allen is jacked – the likely defensive leader filled out his suit. If he plays this year close to how he looks, we may have another Butkus Award winner on our hands.
  4. Line of scrimmage is the differentiator – there was a discussion about the defensive line especially up the middle. The SEC Network panel had the same perspective I had over the last 2 years. We didn’t have the game-wrecking defensive tackle that could dominate the middle. I was surprised that question wasn’t asked in Kirby’s media session. If we can find the right guy(s), I think this becomes a big reason to believe this team could be special.

The season really seems to start this week with Media Days, and this year is no exception. I get the idea that Kirby likes the hand he has been dealt.

(Ed. note) As a bonus, I had ChatGPT roast the picture. Here’s the result (all in good fun, of course):

I've been a Dawg my entire life. UGA was always my dream school where I received 2 Terry College degrees and met my DGD wife. I've been a season ticket holder for over 30 years and love the in-stadium experience over anything from Section HD. My first game in Sanford Stadium was the 1981 Auburn game where we clinched the SEC championship. The best game I've attended in person was the Midnight Miss against Ohio State (nite, nite!). The best home games I've attended were the 1984 Clemson game (the Butler did it) and the 2013 LSU game (that 4th down is still the loudest single moment I've experienced between the hedges). The game I love to win is against the Handbags (FTMF), and the game I hate to lose is the NATS (Tuck Fech).

  1. I haven’t seen any of the coverage but I’m excited. Forty five days is nothing. It’s almost in sight. We’ll be innthe thirties soon!

    • Yeah, it will take a few more days before we’re within the average-margin-of-victory-over-Tennessee days until kickoff. Then we know it’s, well,…still at least several weeks away.

  2. Love these boys & what they contribute to the team but they say ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! Between Gunner “Neat” Stockton, CJ “I just wanna play football” Allen & Daylen “Erkle” Everette, not a single interesting tidbit was shared or morsel was dropped. I know these boys are trained by the PR team to give bland non-answers, but absolutely no “fire, passion or energy” was imparted by these fine young men doing their best robotic “all bidness” impersonations. Please just gimme something to nourish my bulldog soul over these next 45 days!!

    • Poker. They’re all playing poker. That is the game Kirby plays; show nothing, have no tells, bluff. raise the bet and when it’s time, call. It’s poker.

    • For an event like this, I’d rather have bland boys repping me than any player that stood out TOO much for any reason. – PDawg30577

  3. Kirby has really drawn a line in the sand with his “if you don’t want to be coached hard don’t come here” statement. Does a talented prima donna team (ahem…Texas) beat a blue collar lunchbox group? In a shootout against lesser talent, probably yes. But when the pressure is on I’ll take the working group. Still…it’s hard to fill playmaker positions without offering Lambos. When the current system breaks…and it will…it will be interesting to see what Kirby chooses to do. Don’t see him running a mini-NFL team with CBAs, drafts, payrolls, etc. He’s a college game guy and if that goes away I wouldn’t be surprised if he hangs it up. They talk about Saban being the Commish…I’d take Kirby.

    • I’m sure Kirby knew what was going to happen later in the day, and I can’t help but wonder if some of those comments were aimed at a certain Gwinnett County high school that seems to think UGA doesn’t exist (and I ain’t talking about Buford).

  4. I’m telling you, Kirby knows what he’s got, and he’s happy with it. If he’s happy, I’m happy. If the lines of scrimmage perform, we’ll all be very happy next January.
