We Took the Light Show Idea from Alabama, So They’ll Take Georgia’s Tax Idea

From the 247sports article:

State representative Joe Lovvorn of Auburn is seeking to create what he says is a “competitive edge” for college athletes in Alabama by making their name, image and likeness earnings exempt from Alabama’s individual income tax.

Lovvorn introduced House Bill 240, the Competitive Edge NIL Tax Cut Act, on Tuesday.

Trust me, the citizens of Alabama seem to be as warm to the idea as we are. If it’s such a dandy idea, do it for everyone and we might be able to afford to go to games again.

Or pony up the money for the Hartman Fund and ticket price adjustments, if that’s in your budget anymore.

  1. Do the Alabama people realize the companies that provide the lights in both states are the same company and that company’s headquarters are in Atlanta? When anyone upgrades their stadium lighting to LEDs, they get this capability. Stupid Bammers.

On the state tax question, I stand by my original statement. If you want to eliminate the state income tax for all of the state’s citizens, I’m all ears. Doing it for a very small number of college athletes seems to be ridiculous while we pay for their scholarships with after-tax money.

  2. Never been a bad idea that Alabama is not willing to embrace. Meanwhile, they are looking to remove a recently enacted state tax break on overtime pay and will continue to impose a state sales tax on groceries. But hey, Ryan Williams needs some more fingernail polish money.

  3. Politicians: Let’s do something that favors a small group unnecessarily.

Also Politicians: Why does the general public hate us?

  4. No state income tax does have a siren lure. But without one, you’ll just pay the same taxes in other ways, mostly through property and sales taxes. College athletes typically don’t own property in the state in which they play, so this kind of tax exemption would work out well for them. But everyone else would foot the bill.

    • Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Nevada and Arizona seem to do pretty well without a state income tax. In multiple of those cases, sales and use tax from tourism activities help a lot.

Florida exempts most groceries (non-prepared food) from sales tax and the state portion is 6%.

  5. If I may re-use my comment from the original post:

Politicians: Giving prostitutes a bad name since the Magna Carta.

  6. Didn’t UGA actually display their light show BEFORE Bama did? If I remember correctly, wasn’t that done for the 1st time during the UGA-ND game in 2019? Unless I am wrong, when we did it, Bama fans were crying that it was THEIR idea and that THEY had it first, even though we showed it off BEFORE they did, so of course, WE stole it from them!

    • That’s accurate. It was a rare season where Georgia had more evening games than Alabama did, so we got to launch it first with the ND game. They got to show theirs in October against Tennessee; we got to set it off on September 21st against ND.

      • That’s exactly how I remember it. Effing Bama fans were acting so childish over that. Now everybody’s got the technology and it’s not a really big deal. Although it looks pretty cool inside the Steg.

    • That light show issue was on the bammer recruiting white board, that CKS took a photo of while exiting alabamia….GO DAWGS!!
