Tuesday Refugee Roundtable: How Hard Are You Munsoning?

Right now there seems to be a social media battle between Georgia fans and Tenneessee fans about who is going to beat who, but moreso around who is going to implode more than who. Some Vowels fans are convinced that this will be the same old Hype-ul let down, some are declaring the team is back and the streak is over. Some from the Bulldog camp are convinced that this will be the game where everyone finally comes to the “dammit Bobo” camp and that heads will roll after another poor offensive showing in Knoxville, others are convinced that this will be the same old Hype-ul smoke and mirrors to start a season before the wheels come off the short bus at Kneeland.

Consider this:

2024 – Starts 2-0, including a win against a perceived decent ACC team, and racks up over 700 yards of offense against a team from the Southern Conference. QB looks like he’s arrived and is the game changer Bobby Hill’s always needed.

2025 – Starts 2-0, including a win aagainst a perceived decent ACC team, and racks up over 700 yards of offense against a team from the Southern Conference. QB looks like he’s arrived and is the game changer Bobby Hill’s always needed.

In 2024, the wheels came off the bus against Arkansas. The team achieved a little over 300 yards against Georgia and Beck threw for over 300 yards. After the Clemson game, where optimism was high for the Dawgs, Georgia would have lackluster performances against Tennessee Tech, Kentucky, Mississippi State…hell pretty much all the games in between. Don’t forget Ole Miss happened before we played Tenneessee.

I don’t know what will happen Saturday, nor am I certain that Kirby’s been keeping the playbook tight or if the offensive unit sucks as a whole. I certainly see plenty of evidence from both camps of opinions that either could be true. But I feel like we’ve been in this place before, and I’ve been more pleasantly surprised by Kirby’s work than disappointed. We’ve also witnessed where Kirby uses the games of the past two weeks as scrimmages where we all pull our hair out because we don’t cover the spread or rack up 700 yards of offense to a “pretty win”. I dare say Kirby hasn’t cared about style points, unless he’s attempting to prove a point (re: Oregon and Florida State). I can see where Smart would’ve seleceted the Austin Peay game as another attempt to get the OL to come together and continue to focus on improving the running game, which hit a low point statistically last season. Let’s hope that this pattern continues Saturday.

Until then, I’ll hold fast to the belief that Kirby’s on the mother.

It feels less stressful than Munsoning, to be sure.

Go ‘Dawgs! Where do you stand on your mindset for Saturday’s game?

  1. I’m confident. We have the best coach in college football. We Jane a stout defense and our running game is legit.

  2. I keep my expectations low and that is my form of Munsoning. I don’t know what will happen on offense. I expect our defense to give them hell. Go Dawgs!

  3. Our defense looks terrific, so far. Bobby Hill’s offense does very well against mediocre defensive teams and ours isn’t that. I hope that our O line stands up and proves me wrong about them. I am here for it and will be glad that I was wrong. Go Dawgs, keep the glorious domination of the Urnge Hoard intact.

  4. I think our defenses is legit and we should come out of Kneeland with a win. As Paul Finebaum said yesterday, a lot of people have gone broke betting against Kirby Smart. That said, the Munson in me is worried that our O-line cannot pass block for shit and our QB is unable to throw a slant, post or flag route. We all know they are gonna stack the box against the run, play the DB’s back, and dare us to throw it, so I expect a high volume of bubble screens, swing passes and wheel routes early, but Gunner has to eventually hit something downfield or it will be a long day. Just my two cents. Go Dawgs.

  5. My inner Munson is strong right now. I’d buy into the argument that Kirby and Bobo are keeping it vanilla if we were running it a lot and our passing plays were vanilla, but we were executing well. But our OL has too many issues. Stockton has his good moments, but too many bad moments given how long he’s been in Athens. I hope I’m wrong, but I won’t be surprised if we lose Saturday. Unlike past years, one loss won’t end our CFP hopes, so there’s that. But given all of the leg injuries we’ve had in only two games, I worry that the worst playing field in the NCAA will take down more of our boys. If we lose more O linemen to that damned Indian burial ground, it doesn’t matter if we win or lose. We’re screwed.

    • Boo! I don’t want you to be a homer but having read your post I have to disagree. I know it is cliched but for me it is truth. In Kirby I trust. We both love GEORGIA I just hope you are wrong. Not an attack Brother just a disagreement. Go DAWGS. (That shit field at kneel land has torn many a knee of UGA players. On that we agree)

  6. Our defense has done a good job of holding Heupel’s offense in check the past few years, so I’m hoping to see that trend continue. I think the hostile environment will make things tough for Gunner, and our run game hasn’t been tested against SEC-caliber competition yet.

If we can get up a couple of scores early, maybe that takes the crowd out of it and we can grind away for a victory. If we fall behind a couple of scores, I don’t know that we have the horsepower to pull off a comeback.

More than anything, I just want us to come out healthy. Too many Dawgs have fallen victim to the field at Kneeland.

  7. I burned my Munson hat, as much as I loved him, after out 2nd Natty.
    Believe in Kirby

    • This. Larry Munson was an announcer. His job was to make things seem as dramatic as possible. I don’t get taking pride in pessimism but so many Georgia fans do.

      • You can love Larry (I still listen to those songs the Senator posted with Munson Callz mixed in) w/out being scared of the 10t Boogity Man – that doesn’t even exist.

        • We all do what comes natural I guess. Acting scared each and every week would take the fun out of it to me. In ‘22 I had an absolute blast because I could see what was in front of me and knew maybe one other team in the country had a shot at beating us. So I didn’t waste that wonderful season biting the end of my fingers off week after week. I just enjoyed it. I don’t know that I think we will go undefeated this season but I think it’s possible. And I’m going to enjoy it rather than worry. You can’t control it anyway.

  8. We have playmakers on every side of the ball…they will be coached up and ready…as every Dawg remains disciplined and does his job, we will grind out a victory atop Rotten Crotch. Go Dawgs!

    • Considering UGA football is 2-0 so far, the season does start this upcoming Saturday afternoon vs big urunge kuntry football, UGA football staff has plenty of film to view and plot a game plan, other than the seccg in 2019 where CKS made some serious staff changes in 2020, hc’s very seldom change who they is, big urunge kuntry football hc is who he is, scared shitless, constipated and full of blather, he do know one thing, UGA football is coming to checker board nation playing for a “W” to take home, no consolation gifts required, maybe be even a little chip on their shoulder, early weather forecast should be good, top 25 standings don’t mean squat, “W”‘s mean everything to CKS and UGA football, big urunge kuntry football will be looking at UGA football to make a mark…GO DAWGS!!

  9. If our offense plays the way it did against AP we not only lose, we get embarrassed. We can’t leave the defense out there the entire game. I’m a grumpy old white dude. Grew up with Munson and it still runs strong in my blood.

  10. If their defense is good, we could be in trouble. A good defense is going to make Stockton throw it downfield and we haven’t seen him play in rhythm or with any real comfort in the passing game yet.

If we’re running the ball, we’ll win it with defense. If we’re running and throwing it well, we’ll beat them handily.

The beat up OL will probably make things look ugly at times and make the miserable bobo hater’s day.

It’s all really just that simple.

    • Both starting corners are out, which is not to say they’ll be hapless but if we don’t test that at least a few times, they’re may be a bigger problem than we know of.

      • Good. I haven’t followed them.

I know our defense is big, fast and salty so for them to win, we will have to be inept on offense…

Like the last time Stockton played a defense with a pulse.

I hope we see more of the offense we saw in the opener.

    • A co-worker’s son plays on the defense at UT currently. She said they are nervous because their defense is not as good as it has been the past two years. With their cornerbacks out, I’m even more hopeful. Looks to me it’s going to be a bit of strength against strength, and weakness against weakness. I hope Gunnar comes out with his hair on fire and the O line has lots of chips on their shoulders.

  11. If anything, I feel like UT is not as good this year as they were a couple years back when Hooker was the QB. Their QB underthrows deep balls and he underthrows them bad. We will get picks if he does that against us.

I like our chances in the run game too. For all the crap the O line is taking (some rightfully and some wrongfully so), they are really good at run blocking and we have 3 or 4 backs that are pretty damn good. Can they stop our run? I don’t think so. If they can’t do that and have to start committing safeties to help with run support, then they will be in trouble. Gunner just has to start seeing open guy when this happens. He can’t be checkdown Charlie all season long. We need to hit some explosive plays.

  12. Worried, which comes naturally for me. I haven’t seen anything that makes me confident in our o-line, and I’m not sure about Stockton yet. But unlike before, I am nearly always happy with our head coach in moments like these!

  13. As usual I’m nervous…but cautiously optimistic that we have better athletes and Kirby is > Bobby Hill.
Maybe the Offense has been working on this game and that’s why they were discombobulated last Saturday.
The crowd will be a huge factor.
I believe “Kirby is on the mother”.

  14. I don’t Munson, I make orange clad sister kissing hillbilly Booby Hill idolators Munson.

  15. At this point we know very little about this teams potential. As per usual they’ve kept everything vanilla & close to the vest. That being said, the two fumbles are troubling as is the pass blocking. Fraziers fumble in particular. It looks so far that he might be the 3rd best back we have but that is certainly subject to change. We cannot afford more injuries on the OL & it feels like we’re due a stretch of some no injury games. I felt we would be 4-0 to start the season & that is still there for the taking so let’s go get number 3 this weekend!

  16. These are not Larry Munson’s dawgs. He was an irreplaceable treasure. I wish Larry could have seen the 21 & 22 seasons. I really have no idea what this team is. So yeah there’s Munson level anxiety going into this one.

The viles are down both starting CB’s. My guess is they flood the box with maximum pressure on Gunner while stuffing the run. Gunner will need to hit a couple of deep shots early to get the pressure off. It would be nice to get a lead early and take the crowd out of it. Their new QB doesn’t know he’s supposed to lose. Hopefully the defense teaches him to fear the dawgs. I really hope Skycast is available. Can’t stand listening to Herbie. How he continues to get more annoying is a real talent he’s mastered. Scott Howard on a game call is also not something I enjoy.

  17. If we get a running game going…more than just Gunner on the RPO… we might stomp on them. But I’m not convinced we will. Bobo will test the corners with the quick screens. Again, either this works for explosive plays or we might be very nervous come 4th Q.
