Thursday Thought Provoker: Life in the Fast Lane

Life comes at you fast. Michigan, after every hit coaching candidate has been scooped up, has to quickly fire their head coach.

Rumors spread like wildfire that DeBoer to Michigan is a done deal.

Which opens up the very real possibility everyone’s been talking about for weeks:

Well holy hell. If DeBoer bolts right away and isn’t allowed to coach in the CFP, and Kiffin severs ties on the Bayou, the question is this – would Kiffin be allowed to coach in his first CFP game as a head coach – at Alabama? Joey Freshwater, I must say…damn good stuff, sir.

Today’s Thought Provoker is this: if Kalen bolts, who’s Alabama’s man? Do we worry if Kirby wants to take the reigns, or are we confident that he likes what he’s built in Athens?

I’d put money on Dan Lanning or them driving a dump truck up to Cignetti’s house.

What’s your thought?

  1. I just can’t fathom Kirby leaving his alma mater and the machine he has built for Tuscaloser. In this new era, Bama ain’t what it once was. The shine is off that program.

I’d laugh my ass off if Kiffin dumps LSU for them. Lanning has a good thing in Oregon. He’s loved, has nearly unlimited resources thanks to Nike Man, isn’t compared to a previous coach whose success he’ll never match, and the fan base isn’t batshit crazy. Also, aside from tOSU and now Indiana, his schedule is ACC soft every year.

If Deboer leaves, my guess is that Bama ends up with an assistant or G5 coach… or Mike Norvell. No established coach in his right mind walks into that no-win situation.

    • Thinking about who I’d love to see Bama hire the most from a standpoint of their fan base losing their minds would be Gus Malzahn.

  2. If Deboer heads north, please, please, please let Lane flip to Bama. LSU losing another coach to Bama so to speak would be glorious. Talk about amping up a rivalry. Good lordy!

  3. Maybe DeBoer could loan his staff that he takes to Michigan to Bama for the cfp run

  4. I’m going to go off the beaten path … I wouldn’t be surprised if Bama tried to get DeMeco Ryans to leave the NFL.

They desperately want their own Kirby, and Kirby ain’t leaving Athens unless he goes by himself.

    • Yeah but Houston isn’t going to let him go… Former Steelers said Tomlin to Penn State, but maybe he could slide to Michigan; he does not seem like he would be willing to put up with all the BS and craziness at Bama though….

        • They are nuttier than we think they are, if they think a current NFL coach not on the hot-seat would come back to college….

          • Dang it, ee. I wanted to reply to your last comment but there’s no reply button.

As I was gonna say, is his agent Jimmy Sexton?

    • All this Kirby leaving Athens talk is a bunch of bologna! He will be playing golf at ACC and hanging out at the men’s grill for the rest of his life! He ain’t leaving Athens Georgia, period.

  5. How many of these guys are repped by Jimmy Sexton? Did Christmas come early for him?

  6. DeBoer to Meeecheeegun
    Freeman to NY Giants
    Lane train Bama
    Kelly Penal State
    Ogeron to LSU
    Tommy Reese to ND

    • Matt Campbell may be contacted by Michigan. As I heard one former player say on TV earlier, someone needs to find out how dry the ink is on Matt’s contract with Penn State.

    • Exactly what I was going to say.
That would be it for me..
I’d never be interested in watching football again.

    • Me too but that aint happening. Kirby doesnt give a shit about Alabama. They just think he does.

      • I believe you.
I think Kirby would rather bite the head off of a rattlesnake than to leave UGA.

        • When I watch Kirby’s pregame speech vids, I tend to think that Kirby would bite the head off of a rattlesnake just for the fun of it.

    • I don’t think that Kirby and Mary Beth are uprooting their family to move from Athens to Tuscaloosa (or anywhere else that isn’t an NFL job for that matter). Not until they are all out of school.

  7. Question is Jimmy Sexton DeBoer’s agent?

If Deborah loses for the third straight time to Oklahoma I could see it happening. Bama might attempt to fire him for cause.

If the answer to my question is yes. Somewhere Jimmy Sexton is leaking the story to every AD his coaches work for.

Love to see the Kiffin story get traction until LSU announces his new massive contract renewal approved by the governor. Followed by the gumps being turned down by everyone. Until Dabo gets the job.

  8. There’s probably an astronomical buyout at LSU – assuming the contract is signed. Kiffin may have painted himself into a corner.

  9. Never trust a man that spends an hour each morning grooming his beard.
Likely a very vain person…maybe even a narcissist.
Or maybe it was competition with Ryan Day that drove it.

  10. Didn’t we lose a WR recruit to Michigan?
I don’t think Michigan waits 2 weeks to hire a coach.
Brian Kelly maybe their safest play, but would love to see the aftermath of a DeBoer hire there. Like EE, I think they would need an absolute no from D. Ryans.

    • Yes we did – the WR from Cartesville signed with Michigan. As I heard on ESPN today, every athlete that signed last week now has the opportunity to opt out of their LOI. Plus the portal opens on 1/2 and they all can leave, so their roster and new recruits will be inundated with calls.

  11. There is a less than zero chance that CKS leaves UGA for Michigan or Bama. He loves UGA with every fiber of his being. I’m not a betting man, but this is the one thing I’d put money on.

  12. Man, I HOPE karma is this big of a bitch.

Lane takes the LSU job, only for the Bama job to come open weeks later?

    CHEF’S

    KISS

  13. So I was going to post a really long post about how Michigan is good/great college football job and how they have the $$$ to get anyone they want and if they want to outbid Alabama for Kaylen DeBoer etc. Then I found this on the youtubes and I watched for a few minutes.

    https://www.youtube.com/live/NwhWna-TY0c?si=dEXZL-6Eu808HqaC

Man, Michigan football has been dirty for a while. Even one of their own dudes is saying. Harbaugh, Stallions, the staffer caught up stealing pictures, and now Sherrone Moore.

The school has an interim President. There is so much instability and the AD may not survive it. Why would DeBoer thrust himself into that? He would have to really dislike Tuscaloosa or believe he is another 3 loss season away from getting fired there.

If DeBoer leaves for Ann Arbor, we are not losing CKS. It would be glorious if it results in more prolonged Laner drama, but that is wishful thinking.

After DeBoer, a lot of the pundits are mentioning the DC for the Chargers who was in Ann Arbor with Harbaugh but who still has a show cause for another year or Dan Lanning. Apparently there is some talk about going after Clark Lea.

What the Moore firing does do is open up the all of their signees and the roster for the transfer portal. Perhaps Savion Hiter revists Athens. Some people think the QB for the Wolverines will head to LSU but there is also scuttlebutt that the Leavitt guy from ASU is going to Baton Rouge.

If Lea heads to Ann Arbor, does he convince the 5-star QB he just signed to go with him or does he decide he made a mistake by not coming to Athens?

It will be pretty interesting to see what Michigan does …

    • On a side note, the twitter account/site that leaked Mateer’s gambling info also posted that Moore was going to get fired on 12/1 for this very issue.

He is reporting that Michigan is trying to sign DeBoer before the end of the week.

    • I think that I read today this the Board of Trustees at Michigan is meeting today (?) to discuss the fate of Warde Manuel. After all the shit that has gone on in Ann Arbor the last five or six years, I don’t see how Warde survives as AD. Not just the Stallions cheating thing, but the Harbaugh covid violations in recruiting, now Sherrone Moore (which just about everyone believes was a known thing by people in the athletic department), the coaches that got the DUIs, etc., etc., etc. If it is determined that Warde knew about the Moore thing and did nothing about it until after The Game and signing period, it is going to get a lot worse up there before it gets better.

For that reason I just can’t believe that DeBoer would leave for that job but I could be completely wrong.

  14. Deborah followed a legend and thats just too tough of a job. Every loss comes with death threats etc Im sure.

Even if he found Gus’s rabbit foot and won it all this year, a BTA showing by us again at their house has him in deep trouble. They would say hes only winning with Saban’s players.
