They Didn’t Belong in the CFP…And So It Begins

You had to know this would get kicked up this weekend.

Not everyone agrees.

Personally, Joey Freshwater doesn’t have much to chirp about. They got their signature win, but crapped the bed against Kentucky, Florida, and LSU. The Alabama fans are insufferable right now, as well. The two fan bases have now aligned themselves with Florida State fans, which is not elite company to be in.

Honestly, Alabama’s resume of wins was far more impressive than Ole Miss’s, but losses to Vanderbilt and Oklahoma are hard to overlook, especially the way in which they lost. Vanderbilt looked like 2022 Ohio State against the Tide, and Alabama looked like 2022 Vanderbilt against the Sooners. The optics were awful, and it’s really questionable logic considering Alabama’s biggest win was almost one of the biggest comeback losses in college football history to the Dawgs.

I hate to say it, but I’m pulling for Tennessee and SMU today, chiefly because I want to see evidence that the “SEC bias” tipped ridiculously in the B1G’s favor this year, and I think it’s entirely possible both of those teams lose today.

Thing is, regardless of the outcome in either of those two games, the Unconquered narrative is going to be even louder tomorrow.

When Norvell, DeBoer, and Kiffin find themselves sitting in the same room together whining about the same thing, it makes you appreciate even more than our coach is Kirby Smart, and he doesn’t have time for that bullshit. He just simply performs.

    • $elling of commercial time during cfp time $lot$ is a helluva lot ea$ier/lucrative than “The brown circle bowl” game and Mickey could GAS less who participate$, when the needy get greedy, Friday night suffrage is the winner…just loved the exploitation of the “1st time in the history of the expanded cfp” this or that has ever happened….#WE’REFUCKED!!

  1. “The CFB Playoff Committee”.
That short phrase will become (and should be in the Lexicon) code for describing something or someone that is completely inept, ridiculous, biased, dishonest, unqualified and lost, FUBAR and embarrassing (there are lots of adjectives that we could add to that..all of them negative).
As in “The US House of Representatives’ attempts at presenting and passing a sensible and responsible budget plan are CFB PC worthy.
There are several SEC teams that would easily handle the first round of the playoffs…South Carolina, Florida, O’Miss, Alabama are ALL MUCH better teams with higher SOS than the Indiana-ish tokens that were given a place. I think there was (is) MUCH SEC resentment and jealousy on that committee..They were determined to promote the BIG and diminish the SEC. Still, don’t be surprised if three out of the four semi-finalists are SEC.

  2. Sigh — this is what we have all been discussing for years. When the BCS was abolished, people cheered that we were going to have a “true playoff.” Then when the 4 team playoff was replaced with the 12 team playoff, people cheered that the most deserving teams would be there to include conference champions. In the end, are we really discussing the merits of a paper tiger 1 loss Indiana team versus a 3 loss SEC team?

SB would say the playoffs are diminishing the regular season and based on the whining from the Bama and Ole Miss fan bases, I can’t disagree. The idea that winning only matters when you play the “important” games and that losing to Vandy and Kentucky is “ok” only amplifies the problem.

I will be curious to see how things turn out and if there are additional games that show the same disparity between contenders and pretenders today.

  3. Was indiana football Mickey’s “cfp cinderella”?, obviously nicole took nd minus the points for “One millllioon dollars”….GO DAWGS!!

  4. I’d rather them rely on objective achievements than convince these asshats they can discern who belongs with expert subjectivity.

    My message to the Laner:

If you want in, take care of your business or stfu.

  5. This year we’ve seen that wins and losses and the “eye test” are what mattered the most to the CFP committee. If the team looked great demolishing cupcakes and averaged over 43 points a game, they must be playoff worthy. SOS meant nothing. I do agree that Bama losing to both Vandy and Okalahoma were bad losses, but when you have to play LSU, UGA, S. Carolina & Tennessee and Indiana only played 2 teams with winning records (Michigan @ 7-5 and OSU @ 10-2) to get into the playoff, something is very wrong with the criteria of who should make it.

    • Yeah, and the “eye test” administered by examining a stat sheet is totally different from seeing a team in person.
      Three examples.
      1. Kirk Herbstreit this morning said that actually watching Indiana in person showed that their players as a group did not measure up to ND’s, implying Indiana didn’t belong in the tournament. He never said that before seeing Indiana in person.
      2. Remember the nightmare UGA hosting Alabama in 2015? We were the betting favorite and ranked higher. After the game Kevin Butler said being on the field before the game and just looking at Alabama’s players compared to how ours looked he thought to himself, “Shit, we are in trouble. ” Actually, he didn’t say on the radio he said “shit ” but I will bet he said it.
      3. Before we played TCU Radi Nabulsi said on his podcast that having seen TCU’s practice he could tell it’s players didn’t physically match up to ours.He said he knew we would stomp them.

Kirby said on his post-game sideline interview that he wished the committee members would go to games and see what those teams are like in person. That would be the “eye test” that would matter.

  6. Nicole, people react to postseason blowouts because it proves that the team that got blown out doesn’t belong in the playoff.

  7. My playoff proposal was 6 when it went to 4 teams, and going to 12 is being shown to be an overly large field in most years.

Further conference expansion has allowed good teams to get lucky and look great by avoiding the majority of the top of their respective conferences.

6 gives team incentive to play out of conference to get the a bye by being the top 2. It also creates discussion through the debate of who the top 4 is. Remaining bowls are more devalued than they were with the expansion to 4.

  8. Now we’ve got two blowouts in the first two games and it’s lookin like we’ll see another in the third. Great entertainment ESPN. Oh, and the media is lining up to defend the committee and this farce of a tournament.

  9. How much fun would it be to have 3 SEC teams in the semis, particularly now that we have evidence that Alabama, Ole Miss or USCe would have been better picks than SMU? Mickey’s head would explode.

    • If Tejas doesn’t figure thing out this next series, it could become very interesting in Austin.

    • Mickey’s head won’t explode. They have our TV rights. But this idea that we need diversity in the playoffs is silly and it’s being proven so far this weekend. It’ll never happen – there’s too many $$$ at stake – but 8 is enough.

      • The elimination of divisions in these super conferences is just as much to blame as anything else.

      • The selections were not motivated by “diversity. ”
The NCAA and the networks televising the NCAA basketball tournament promote to audiences the “Cinderella ” teams because the idea of a Cinderella beating an established power is actually marketed by the networks to attract casual fans.
ESPN wanted the casual fans to watch an see if Indiana could knock off one of the biggest names.

        • What I meant by diversity is just not ‘the usual suspects’. I think it was intended as being essentially what you said – an attempt to increase the TV fanbase. These kind of games, if they continue like this, will ultimately backfire on them.

      • ehh I’ve watched less football this year than I have in any season since college.

Turned off the anOSU vs UTk game before the half. I’ve compared CFB and Mickey to NASCAR for a while and IMO the arch is going to move faster with CFB.

  10. What we’ve learned over the last 2 days is what we’ve known all along.

There aren’t 12 teams annually that are national championship material.

What we’ll learn next week is that just because you win a conference title doesn’t mean you should get a bye.

    The committee is a joke.

    • Aw hell, ee.
This is all about mickey-money. I’ve read enough of your posts to know you realize this ridiculous pageant ain’t about football. These are glorified bowl games masqueraded as playoffs to get eyes on them.

I am kinda looking forward to UGA v Notre Dame, tho.
Not really looking forward to UGA v Texas…AGAIN

      FTMF.

      • I agree with that. I really doubt the 12 team format generated significantly more money than an 8 team format. The 12 team format made sure everyone could agree to a way to divide the money.

      • Unless Gunner is really bad the results of this first round of games makes me feel great. Notre Dame is going to be riding high after beating the equivalent of a “good” Mississippi State team and when we beat them we get Penn State IF Franklin can win two games over ranked teams in a row.

  11. 100% agree. Prior to NIL and the portal, there were 2-4 teams each year that could legitimately contend for the NC. In the NIL/portal area there are may be 5 or 6. This 12 team made for tv tournament is nothing but reality tv. I’m disgusted with the whole thing and expect the next round to be every bit as disappointing.
